Puzzles & Riddles
While Assassin's Creed III isn't primarily a puzzle game, several key sequences and side activities incorporate riddle-solving and environmental manipulation to progress. Mastering these challenges is crucial for story progression, unlocking valuable collectibles, and achieving 100% synchronization. This section details the most prominent puzzles you'll encounter and provides actionable strategies to overcome them.
The Animus Anomalies (Desmond's Puzzles)
As Desmond Miles, you'll encounter several Animus Anomalies that require you to manipulate environmental elements to create a path forward. These often involve light redirection, platform alignment, and timing-based jumps.
- Anomaly 1: New York City (Modern Day)
- Location: After the initial modern-day sequence in New York, you'll find the first anomaly in the ruins of the stadium.
- Objective: Redirect a beam of light to power a distant console.
- Strategy:
- Locate the initial light source. It's usually a large, glowing orb.
- Identify reflective surfaces (mirrors or metallic panels) in the environment.
- Interact with these surfaces (usually by pressing the action button, e.g., 'E' on PC, 'A' on Xbox 360, 'X' on PS3) to rotate them.
- Carefully adjust each reflector until the light beam successfully bounces from one to the next, eventually reaching the target console. Pay attention to the angle of incidence and reflection.
- Once the console is powered, interact with it to complete the anomaly.
- Anomaly 2: Temple Entrance (Modern Day)
- Location: Inside the Grand Temple, prior to accessing the main chamber.
- Objective: Align a series of platforms to cross a chasm.
- Strategy:
- Observe the pattern of the moving platforms. Some may be on timers, others may only move when you step on them.
- Look for glowing interactable points on the ground or walls. These usually control the movement or rotation of nearby platforms.
- Timing is Key: For platforms that move on a cycle, wait for the optimal moment to jump. Don't rush; a missed jump means a restart.
- For platforms controlled by switches, activate them strategically. Sometimes, you'll need to activate one, quickly jump across, then activate another from the new position.
- The final platform often requires a synchronized jump or a quick sprint after activating its movement.
Captain Kidd's Treasure Puzzles
These side activities involve deciphering cryptic maps and solving environmental riddles to uncover hidden treasure chests containing unique items, including the legendary Captain Kidd's Ring and the Pirate Flintlock Pistols. There are four such puzzles in total.
- General Strategy:
- Acquire the Map: Each treasure hunt begins by finding a specific "Puzzling Map" collectible. These are often found in chests or given as rewards for completing certain side missions.
- Examine the Map: Open your inventory and select the Puzzling Map. It will display a fragmented image and sometimes a short riddle. Pay close attention to landmarks, geographical features, and any distinct shapes.
- Identify the Region: The map will usually hint at one of the game's main regions: Boston, New York, or the Frontier.
- Locate the Starting Point: Travel to the suspected region and begin searching for the landmarks depicted on the map. Use your eagle vision (press 'Y' on Xbox 360, 'Triangle' on PS3, 'V' on PC) to highlight points of interest.
- Solve the Environmental Riddle: Once you've found the general area, you'll need to perform a specific action or locate a hidden mechanism. This could involve:
- Climbing a specific tree or rock formation: The map might show a unique tree or cliff face.
- Interacting with a specific object: A loose brick, a hidden lever, or a unique statue.
- Following a sequence of clues: Sometimes, solving one part of the puzzle reveals the next clue (e.g., a carving pointing in a direction).
- Uncover the Treasure: Once the riddle is solved, a treasure chest icon will appear on your mini-map, indicating the exact location of the buried treasure. Dig it up to claim your reward.
- Example: The Oak Island Treasure (Captain Kidd's Ring)
- Map Location: Found in a chest in the Frontier, near the Davenport Homestead.
- Riddle Hint: "Where the old oak stands sentinel, and the waters whisper secrets."
- Solution Steps:
- Travel to Oak Island, located in the southeastern part of the Frontier map.
- Locate the distinctive large oak tree near the center of the island.
- Around the base of this tree, you'll find a series of small, weathered stones arranged in a circle.
- Examine the stones. One of them will have a faint carving. Interact with it.
- This will trigger a short animation and reveal the location of the buried treasure chest nearby.
- Dig up the chest to obtain Captain Kidd's Ring, a valuable trinket.
Homestead Missions: Artisan Puzzles
Some Homestead missions, particularly those involving the artisans and craftsmen you recruit, will feature minor puzzles to help them in their work or solve their personal dilemmas. These are usually straightforward but require careful observation.
- Example: Norris's Mining Puzzle (The Miner's Request)
- Location: Davenport Homestead, involving Norris the Miner.
- Objective: Help Norris find a specific vein of ore in the mine.
- Strategy:
- Enter the mine with Norris. He will point out areas of interest.
- Look for sparkling or unusually colored rock formations. These indicate potential ore veins.
- Norris will often give verbal clues, such as "It feels colder here" or "The air smells different." Pay attention to these hints.
- Use your Eagle Vision to highlight interactable points or areas of interest. The correct ore vein will often glow distinctly.
- Once you locate the correct vein (usually a rich blue or green deposit), interact with it to complete the mission objective.
