Mastering Edward Kenway's fighting style is crucial for survival, especially when outnumbered or facing elite enemies. This section will equip you with the knowledge to turn the tide in any skirmish.
Understanding Combat Mechanics
Edward's combat system revolves around a core set of actions: attacking, defending, countering, and breaking defenses. Familiarity with these fundamentals will make even the most chaotic battles manageable.
- Attack: Your primary offensive move. Repeatedly pressing the attack button will chain together combos.
- Defense (Block/Parry): Holding the defense button will block incoming attacks. However, against stronger enemies or specific attack types, a well-timed parry (pressing defense just as an enemy attacks) is more effective, creating an opening for a counter.
- Counter: After a successful parry, you can immediately follow up with a counter-attack. This is often an instant kill or a significant blow against most enemy types.
- Break Defense: Some enemies, particularly Brutes and Captains, will block your attacks. Use the Break Defense maneuver to stun them and open them up for damage.
- Disarm: Against enemies wielding large weapons (like Brutes with axes), a disarm counter can be devastating, turning their own weapon against them.

- Pistoliers: These enemies are a high priority. Their ranged attacks can interrupt your combos and deal significant damage. Close the distance quickly or use a pistol shot to dispatch them first.
- Brutes: Heavily armored and powerful, Brutes require a different approach. Focus on disarming them or using the Break Defense move to expose them.
- Captains: Often more skilled and durable, Captains can be challenging. Isolate them if possible and rely on precise counters.
- Utilize Your Environment:
- Environmental Kills: Look for opportunities to use the environment to your advantage. Kicking enemies into water, off ledges, or into explosive barrels can quickly thin out enemy ranks.
- Smoke Bombs: These are invaluable for crowd control. Throw a Smoke Bomb into a group of enemies to stun them, allowing you to chain assassinations or escape a tight spot. You can purchase Smoke Bombs from General Stores in towns like Havana or Nassau.
- Weapon Specialization:
- Dual Swords: Edward's signature weapons are fast and effective for chaining combos and counters against most standard enemies. Upgrade your swords at General Stores to increase their damage and effectiveness.
- Pistols: Your four flintlock pistols are excellent for quickly eliminating distant threats or finishing off weakened enemies. Aim for headshots for instant kills. Remember to reload after a few shots!
- Hidden Blades: While primarily for stealth, the Hidden Blades can be used for quick, silent takedowns in combat if you manage to get behind an enemy.
- Chain Kills and Kill Streaks:
Once you've countered an enemy, you can often chain a kill into another nearby enemy by moving the analog stick towards them and pressing the attack button. Mastering kill streaks is key to clearing large groups efficiently and maintaining your health.
- Health Management:
- Medicinal Pouches: Always carry a good supply of Medicinal Pouches. These can be crafted from animal parts (e.g., Green Iguana skin, found on Isla Providencia) or purchased from General Stores. Use them strategically when your health is low to avoid desynchronization.
- Disengage and Re-engage: If overwhelmed, don't be afraid to temporarily disengage from combat, find cover, and then re-enter the fray from a more advantageous position.
Advanced Techniques
- Human Shields: When facing Pistoliers, grab a nearby enemy and use them as a human shield. This will block the incoming bullet and often stun the Pistolier, creating an opening.
- Tool Combos: Experiment with combining your tools. For example, a Sleep Dart can temporarily remove a powerful enemy from the fight while you deal with others, or a Berserk Dart can turn an enemy against their allies, causing chaos. Crafting these darts requires specific animal parts, such as Howler Monkey skin for Sleep Darts (found in Tulum) and Red Howler Monkey skin for Berserk Darts (found in Principe).
