Raise the Black Flag

This pivotal mission throws you straight into the heart of naval combat, introducing you to the thrilling mechanics of the Jackdaw. Edward Kenway, alongside his newfound allies, sets out to intercept and plunder a Spanish convoy. Your objective is clear: sink the enemy ships and secure their cargo. This mission serves as an excellent tutorial for advanced naval warfare, so pay close attention to the strategies outlined below.

100% Synchronization Objective: Sink two ships by igniting their powder reserves.

Achieving this objective requires precision and understanding of naval combat mechanics. To ignite a ship's powder reserves, you must first heavily damage it with your main cannons (broadsides) until it is nearly destroyed. Once the enemy ship is smoking heavily and appears to be on the verge of sinking, switch to your Swivel Guns. Target the glowing red weak points on the ship's hull. A successful hit on these points will cause a spectacular explosion, igniting the powder reserves and instantly sinking the vessel. You need to do this for two separate ships.

Mission Walkthrough & Naval Combat Strategy

  1. Initial Engagement: The mission begins with the Jackdaw sailing towards the Spanish convoy. You'll be introduced to the basic controls of the ship. Your first priority is to close the distance.
  2. Target Prioritization for 100% Sync:

To make the 100% sync objective easier, we recommend the following target order:

    • First Target: Focus on one of the smaller Gunboats or Brigs. These ships have less health and are easier to bring to the critical "smoking" state required for the powder reserve ignition. Approach from the side, unleashing full broadsides with your standard cannonballs. Once it's heavily damaged and smoking, switch to your Swivel Guns (press the indicated button, usually Triangle/Y/F) and aim for the glowing red weak points.
    • Second Target: Repeat the process with another Gunboat or Brig. Do not attempt this on the larger Frigates or Man o' Wars in later missions, as they are much tougher.
    • Remaining Ships: After securing your two powder reserve ignitions, you can sink the remaining ships using any method you prefer.
  3. Effective Cannon Usage:
    • Standard Cannonballs: Your primary offensive weapon. Use these when you have a good broadside angle on an enemy ship. Aim for the hull to deal maximum damage.
    • Chain Shot: While not strictly necessary for this early mission, remember Chain Shot (aiming for the masts) is excellent for disabling enemy ships, slowing them down, and making them easier targets for boarding or subsequent broadsides. For this mission, focus on damage.
    • Swivel Guns: Crucial for the 100% sync objective. Use them only when an enemy ship is heavily damaged and smoking, targeting the glowing red weak points to ignite powder reserves or finish off a weakened foe.
  4. Maneuvering & Defense:
    • Brace for Impact: When enemy ships are about to fire their broadsides at you, quickly press and hold the "Brace" button (usually Circle/B/E). This significantly reduces incoming damage to your hull, preserving your ship's health. Master this early!
    • Keep Moving: A stationary ship is an easy target. Continuously adjust your speed and direction. Try to stay out of the direct line of fire of multiple enemies.
    • Flanking: Attempt to get behind or to the side of enemy ships to deliver devastating broadsides while minimizing their ability to return fire effectively.
    • Wind Direction: Pay attention to the wind indicator on your HUD. Sailing with the wind gives you a speed advantage, while sailing against it will slow you down. Use this to your advantage to outmaneuver enemies or escape if necessary.
  5. Looting Wreckage: After sinking each ship, sail over its wreckage. A prompt will appear allowing you to collect valuable resources. Always loot! These resources are vital for upgrading the Jackdaw.
  6. Dealing with Multiple Ships: You'll face several ships in this convoy. Avoid engaging more than one or two at a time if possible. Focus your fire to eliminate threats quickly before moving to the next.

Recommended Loadout & Upgrades (Early Game)

At this stage, your Jackdaw is relatively basic. There are no specific "loadouts" to choose from. However, any upgrades you've managed to acquire from previous free-roaming or side activities will be beneficial. Focus on:

  • Hull Strength: Increases your ship's durability.
  • Broadside Cannons: Increases damage output.
  • Swivel Guns: While not directly upgradeable in terms of damage, practicing their use is key.

If you haven't upgraded anything yet, don't worry. The mission is balanced for an un-upgraded Jackdaw, but good strategy is paramount.

Common Pitfalls & Missables

  • Forgetting to Brace: New players often neglect to brace for impact, leading to unnecessary hull damage and potential mission failure. Make it a habit!
  • Not Looting: Failing to collect resources from sunken ships means you'll miss out on crucial materials for Jackdaw upgrades, making future naval battles harder.
  • Missing the 100% Sync: If you sink ships outright with broadsides without using Swivel Guns on their powder reserves, you'll miss the objective. Remember the "smoking ship + swivel gun on weak point" combo.
  • Overextending: Don't rush into the middle of the enemy formation. Pick off ships one by one.

Rewards for Completion

Upon successfully sinking the Spanish convoy and completing the mission, you will receive:

  • Experience Points: Contributes to Edward's overall progression.
  • Reales: A significant amount of currency for upgrades and purchases.
  • Resources: Wood, Metal, Cloth, and Sugar from the looted ships, essential for Jackdaw upgrades.
  • Unlocks: Further story missions and potentially new areas on the world map.

Mastering the techniques taught in "Raise the Black Flag" will set you up for success in the many challenging naval encounters that lie ahead in your pirate journey.
