Embarking on your journey as Edward Kenway, a successful pirate and burgeoning Assassin, requires a keen eye for opportunity and a strategic approach. This section provides detailed, actionable advice to help you master the seas and the cities of the Caribbean.
Early Game Priorities
- Upgrade the Jackdaw Immediately: Your ship, the Jackdaw, is your lifeline and primary tool for progression. Prioritize upgrades to its Hull, Broadside Cannons, and Swivel Guns. Early upgrades will make naval combat significantly easier and allow you to take on tougher prey.
- Hunt for Resources: To upgrade the Jackdaw, you'll need Metal, Wood, Cloth, and Sugar. Focus on plundering smaller, weaker ships (Schooners and Brigs) in the early game. Look for convoys marked on your map, as these often carry valuable resources.
- Crafting is Key: Don't neglect Edward's personal upgrades. Hunt animals on islands like Great Inagua for their pelts and bones. Crafting items like the Health Upgrade (requires two Jaguar Pelts) and Pistol Holsters (requires two Ocelot Pelts) will greatly improve your survivability and combat effectiveness.
- Synchronize Viewpoints: As soon as you enter a new area, climb to and synchronize all available viewpoints. This reveals the map, highlights collectibles, and unlocks fast travel points, saving you valuable time.
Naval Combat Strategies
- Target Weaknesses: Different ship types have different vulnerabilities. Brigs and Frigates are often weakest at their stern (rear), making a well-placed chain shot followed by a ram an effective tactic.
- Use Swivel Guns Wisely: After a broadside, quickly switch to your Swivel Guns to target weak points on enemy ships indicated by glowing red markers. This deals critical damage and can quickly disable an opponent.
- Boarding for Maximum Loot: Whenever possible, board enemy ships instead of sinking them. Boarding allows you to acquire all their cargo and provides the option to repair the Jackdaw, recruit crew members, or send the ship to your fleet.
- Beware of Man O' Wars: These massive warships are formidable foes. Avoid engaging them directly until your Jackdaw is heavily upgraded, especially in Hull and Broadside damage. If you must engage, focus on disabling their masts with Chain Shot and then pummeling their sides.
Land-Based Exploration & Combat
- Utilize Stealth: Edward is an Assassin, and stealth is often the most efficient approach. Use cover, blend with crowds, and employ your Hidden Blades for silent takedowns. Whistling from cover can lure guards into ambush positions.
- Counter is Your Friend: In open combat, mastering the counter-attack is crucial. Press the counter button when an enemy attacks to parry, then follow up with a kill or disarm.
- Pistols for Tough Foes: Your pistols are excellent for quickly dispatching heavily armored enemies or taking out multiple targets in rapid succession. Upgrade your pistol holsters to carry more ammunition.
- Collect Animus Fragments: These glowing blue fragments are scattered across the map. Collecting them contributes to your synchronization and can unlock rewards.
- Treasure Maps: Keep an eye out for Treasure Maps found on dead pirates or in chests. These lead to buried treasure, often containing Riches and design plans for Jackdaw upgrades.
Economy & Progression
- Sell Excess Cargo: Regularly visit Harbors to sell off any excess Sugar, Rum, or other cargo you've plundered. This is a primary source of income for Edward.
