Factions & Organizations
The Caribbean is a melting pot of power struggles, and understanding the key players is crucial for Edward Kenway's survival and success. Aligning with certain factions or antagonizing others can significantly impact your gameplay, offering unique opportunities and challenges.
The Assassin Brotherhood
While Edward isn't a full-fledged Assassin at the outset, his journey intertwines deeply with the Brotherhood's struggle against the Templars. Assisting the Assassins often involves direct combat, stealth missions, and uncovering Templar plots. Completing Assassin Contracts is your primary way to earn their trust and reap rewards.
- Assassin Contracts: These side missions are marked with a white Assassin icon on your map. They typically involve assassinating a target, often with specific optional objectives for bonus rewards.
- Rewards: Successfully completing contracts earns you Reales, unique weapon upgrades (e.g., the Golden Flintlock Pistols after completing all contracts), and unlocks new Assassin recruits for your Kenway's Fleet.
- Strategy: Approach contracts with stealth whenever possible. Use your Eagle Vision (press L3/LS) to identify targets and patrol routes. Whistle from cover to lure guards, use sleep darts for non-lethal takedowns, and berserk darts to create diversions.
The Templar Order
The primary antagonists of the Assassin's Creed series, the Templars in Black Flag are deeply entrenched in colonial power structures, seeking control and order through any means necessary. You'll frequently clash with their forces, particularly during main story missions and when disrupting their operations.
- Templar Hunt Missions: These are specific side missions that become available as you progress through the main story. They involve tracking down and eliminating high-ranking Templar agents.
- Locations: Templar Hunt missions are often found in major cities like Havana, Kingston, and Nassau. Look for the distinctive Templar cross icon on your map.
- Rewards: Eliminating Templar targets often yields significant Reales and valuable crafting materials. Completing all Templar Hunts is essential for 100% synchronization and unlocks the Templar Armor set, found in the Great Inagua hideout.
- Strategy: Templar targets are often heavily guarded. use environmental hazards, blend with crowds, and use your tools effectively. For instance, smoke bombs are excellent for escaping detection or creating an opening for a quick assassination.
The British and Spanish Empires
These two colonial powers are constantly vying for control of the Caribbean. While neither is inherently "good" or "evil" from Edward's perspective, their presence dictates the naval and land-based threats you'll encounter. Your notoriety level directly impacts how aggressively their forces pursue you.
- Naval Encounters: British and Spanish warships patrol the seas. Engaging them in combat is a primary source of resources (wood, metal, cloth, sugar, rum) and Reales.
- Forts: Conquering forts (marked with a red fort icon on the map) reduces the naval presence of the controlling faction in that region, making sailing safer and revealing more collectibles.
- Strategies for Forts:
- Naval Assault: Use your Jackdaw's cannons to destroy the fort's defenses. Focus on the towers first, then the main walls. use heavy shot and mortar attacks.
- Land Invasion: Once the fort's defenses are sufficiently weakened, dock your ship and proceed on foot. Assassinate the Captain and interact with the flag to claim the fort.
- Notoriety: Sinking ships and engaging in open combat will increase your notoriety. High notoriety leads to more frequent and stronger hunter ship patrols. Pay off officials in taverns (marked with a tankard icon) to reduce your notoriety.
Pirates and Smugglers
Edward Kenway himself is a pirate, and you'll encounter numerous fellow buccaneers and smugglers throughout your journey. While not a formal faction you join, interacting with them is integral to the pirate lifestyle and economy.
- Taverns: These social hubs are where you can recruit new crew members, gather information, and reduce your notoriety. Look for the tankard icon on your map.
- Smuggler's Dens: Hidden locations where you can sell valuable goods for higher prices than regular merchants. These are often found in secluded coves or islands.
- Privateers: Occasionally, you'll encounter privateer ships, often flying under false colors. These can be lucrative targets for plunder, but be wary as they can be well-armed.
