Legendary Ship Strategies
Conquering the four Legendary Ships in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is the ultimate test of your naval prowess and the Jackdaw's capabilities. These formidable foes require not just a fully upgraded ship, but also specific tactics and a deep understanding of naval combat. Before engaging, ensure your Jackdaw boasts maximum armor, hull strength, heavy shot damage, broadside cannon damage, and swivel gun damage. Mortars and ramming upgrades are also highly recommended.
General Legendary Ship Combat Tips
- Maintain Distance (Initially): Most Legendary Ships excel at close-quarters combat. Use your mortars and chain shot from a distance to soften them up and disable their sails.
- Exploit Weaknesses: Each Legendary Ship has a unique attack pattern and vulnerability. Learning these is key to victory.
- Swivel Gun Mastery: Immediately target and destroy weak points highlighted by the swivel gun reticle after a successful broadside or mortar hit. This deals critical damage.
- Brace for Impact: Always brace when an enemy ship is about to fire its broadsides or ram you. This significantly reduces incoming damage.
- Repair Strategically: Use your ship repairs only when absolutely necessary, preferably when you have a moment of respite from incoming fire.
- Ramming: A fully upgraded ram can be devastating, especially against ships that expose their sides.
Specific Legendary Ship Encounters
El Impoluto (Dry Tortugas - 777, 353)
This Spanish Man O' War is a brute, specializing in powerful frontal ramming attacks and devastating broadsides. It's often considered the toughest of the four.
- Initial Engagement: Approach El Impoluto from its side, if possible, to avoid its initial ram. Immediately unleash a volley of heavy shot followed by broadside cannons.
- Ramming Counter: El Impoluto will frequently attempt to ram you head-on. When you see it charging, immediately turn hard to port or starboard. As it passes, unleash a full broadside of heavy shot into its exposed side.
- Circle and Strafe: The most effective strategy is to continuously circle El Impoluto, staying just outside the range of its broadsides while keeping your own cannons firing. Use chain shot to disable its sails if you need to create distance or prevent a ram.
- Mortar Use: Utilize mortars when El Impoluto is at a distance or attempting to reposition.
- Swivel Gun Priority: After each successful broadside, quickly use your swivel guns to target its weak points.
- Avoid the Front: Never stay directly in front of El Impoluto for long, as its ram and frontal cannons are incredibly damaging.
The Brothers-in-Arms (Northern Seas - 871, 370)
These two identical frigates, the HMS Fearless and HMS Defiant, operate in tandem, making them a unique challenge. They will attempt to sandwich you and unleash combined broadsides.
- Focus Fire: Immediately choose one of the frigates and focus all your firepower on it. The goal is to sink one as quickly as possible to reduce the incoming damage.
- Chain Shot Priority: Use chain shot extensively on your primary target to disable its sails, preventing it from maneuvering effectively and making it an easier target for your broadsides.
- Keep Them Separated: Try to keep both ships on one side of the Jackdaw, or at least avoid being caught between them. Use your speed and maneuverability to prevent them from flanking you.
- Heavy Shot and Broadside: Once a frigate is slowed by chain shot, unleash heavy shot and broadsides into its hull.
- Ramming Opportunity: If one frigate is heavily damaged and isolated, a well-timed ram can finish it off quickly.
- Swivel Gun Efficiency: Be quick with your swivel gun to maximize damage on your primary target.
La Dama Negra (Southeastern Seas - 207, 44)
This heavily armored Man O' War is almost impervious to cannon fire from the sides, but has a critical weakness: its stern. It relies heavily on powerful mortar attacks.
- Mortar Evasion: La Dama Negra will frequently launch volleys of mortars. Watch for the red targeting circles on the water and immediately steer out of them.
- Target the Stern: The only effective way to damage La Dama Negra is by hitting its stern. You will need to get behind it.
- Chase and Ram: The most effective strategy is to chase La Dama Negra, using chain shot to slow it down. Once you are directly behind it, unleash heavy shot and broadsides into its stern. A well-placed ram from behind can also deal significant damage.
- Stay Close (Behind): Once you are behind La Dama Negra, try to stay there. It struggles to turn quickly enough to bring its broadsides to bear on a ship directly astern.
- Swivel Gun on Stern: Focus your swivel gun fire on any weak points that appear on its stern.
- Avoid Broadside Engagement: Do not engage La Dama Negra from the sides with broadsides; your shots will be largely ineffective.
The Prince (Northeastern Seas - 895, 120)
This Man O' War is unique in that it leaves a trail of explosive barrels in its wake, in addition to its powerful broadsides and chain shot.
- Barrel Awareness: The Prince will constantly drop explosive barrels. Never sail directly behind it for extended periods. Watch the water for the red barrel icons and steer clear.
- Circle and Broadside: The most effective strategy is to circle The Prince, staying to its sides, and unleashing continuous broadsides of heavy shot.
- Chain Shot Counter: The Prince will use chain shot to try and disable your sails. Be prepared to repair if necessary, but prioritize dodging its barrel traps.
- Mortar Use: Use mortars when The Prince is at a distance or when you need to create some space to avoid its barrels.
- Ramming (Carefully): A ram can be effective, but be extremely cautious not to ram into its barrel trail. Approach from the side or front if attempting a ram.
- Swivel Gun Focus: After each broadside, quickly target weak points with your swivel guns to maximize damage.
