The Forts: Conquering Naval Strongholds
Forts are formidable naval strongholds scattered across the Caribbean, representing a significant challenge and a rewarding opportunity for any aspiring pirate captain. Conquering a fort not only clears a section of the map, revealing new activities and collectibles, but also grants you control over that region, reducing the presence of enemy patrols and opening up new fast travel points. This mission serves as your introduction to this crucial gameplay mechanic, teaching you the ropes of both naval bombardment and on-foot infiltration.
100% Synchronization Objective:
- Destroy the fort's defenses using only your ship's mortar. This objective requires precision and patience. Avoid using your broadside cannons or swivel guns on the fort's walls.
Phase 1: Naval Assault - Weakening the Walls
The initial phase of any fort assault involves softening up its defenses from the deck of the Jackdaw. Forts are heavily armed with several cannon types, and understanding their strengths and weaknesses is key to a successful, and synchronized, attack.
Understanding Fort Defenses:
- Mortar Towers: These are the most dangerous, launching devastating projectiles with a wide splash radius. Prioritize these first. They are typically located on elevated platforms.
- Heavy Shot Cannons: These fire powerful, direct shots that can quickly deplete your hull integrity. They are often found on the lower levels of the fort, directly facing the sea.
- Chain Shot Cannons: While less damaging to your hull, these can cripple your sails, making it difficult to maneuver. They are usually interspersed with other cannon types.
- Swivel Guns: Smaller, faster-firing cannons that deal minor damage but can be annoying. Less of a threat than other cannon types.
Naval Assault Tactics for 100% Sync (Mortar Only):
Achieving 100% synchronization requires you to rely solely on your mortar for the fort's destruction. This demands a different approach than a standard assault.
- Maintain Distance: Position the Jackdaw far enough away from the fort to be out of range of most of its direct-fire cannons, but close enough for your mortar to reach effectively. A good starting point is usually just outside the red target zone that indicates enemy firing range.
- Target Priority:
- Mortar Towers: Always target these first. Their high arc and splash damage make them the biggest threat. Aim slightly ahead of their firing sequence to hit them before they launch.
- Heavy Shot Cannons: Once the mortar towers are down, focus on the heavy shot emplacements. These are often marked by a distinct glow when targeted.
- Wall Sections: After neutralizing the primary threats, systematically target the fort's walls. Look for sections that are visibly damaged or glowing red when targeted, indicating weak points.
- Mortar Usage:
- Aiming: The mortar reticle shows the impact zone. Adjust your aim based on the fort's movement (if any) and the trajectory of the mortar shell.
- Timing: Mortars have a slow reload time. Make every shot count. Don't fire haphazardly.
- Evasive Maneuvers: While maintaining distance, be prepared to use your full sails and rudder to dodge incoming mortar fire from the fort. Even at range, their mortars can still hit you.
- Hull Upgrades: Before attempting a fort, especially for 100% sync, ensure your Jackdaw's Hull Armor and Mortar Strength are upgraded as much as possible. This will allow you to withstand more damage and deal more to the fort.
General Naval Assault Tips (if not pursuing 100% Sync):
- Broadside Cannons: Once you've softened up the fort with mortars, or if you're not going for 100% sync, close the distance and unleash devastating broadsides. Aim for the glowing red weak points on the fort walls.
- Swivel Guns: Use your swivel guns to finish off individual cannon emplacements that are heavily damaged. They reload quickly and can be precise.
- Chain Shot: If enemy ships are present, use chain shot to disable their sails, making them easy targets for your broadsides.
- Bracing: Always brace for incoming heavy fire from the fort. This significantly reduces damage to your hull.
Phase 2: On-Foot Infiltration - Securing the Fort
Once the fort's defenses are sufficiently weakened (indicated by a prompt on screen), you'll be able to board and secure it on foot. This phase requires stealth, combat prowess, and strategic movement.
Optimal Routes and Objectives:
Your primary objectives on foot are to eliminate the fort's Captain and disable the alarm bells. There are usually 2-3 alarm bells per fort.
- Landing: After the naval assault, the game will automatically position your ship for boarding. You'll typically land on a beach or a damaged dock area.
- Initial Approach & Stealth:
- Upon landing, immediately enter stealth mode. The fort will be swarming with guards.
- Prioritize silent takedowns of isolated guards. Use bushes, crates, and structures for cover.
- Alarm Bells: Your first priority should be to locate and disable the alarm bells. These are usually marked on your mini-map. Disabling them prevents reinforcements from being called, making the rest of the infiltration much easier. If an alarm is sounded, expect a significant increase in enemy patrols and potentially more challenging combat encounters.
- Enemy Types Encountered:
- Standard Guards: Basic enemies, easily dispatched with stealth or direct combat.
- Brutes: Heavily armored, requiring parries and counter-attacks to defeat. Can be taken down with a single stealth attack from behind.
- Snipers/Lookouts: Often positioned on high vantage points. Prioritize these with your pistol or by climbing to their position for a stealth kill. They can spot you from afar.
- Officers: More skilled combatants, sometimes carrying unique weapons.
- Locating the Captain:
- The Fort Captain is your main target and will be marked on your mini-map once you get close enough or after disabling some alarm bells.
- Captains are usually located in the central keep or a heavily guarded area.
- Stealth Kill Recommended: A stealth assassination is always the safest and quickest way to deal with the Captain. Look for elevated positions, hidden paths, or opportunities to blend in and approach unseen.
- Direct Combat: If forced into direct combat, be prepared for a challenging fight. Captains often have more health and unique attack patterns. Use smoke bombs to disorient them and their guards, allowing for easy assassinations.
- Securing the Fort: Once the Captain is eliminated, the fort is considered "secured." Any remaining guards will become passive or flee.
Rewards for Fort Conquest:
Conquering a fort offers several significant benefits:
- Map Reveal: The surrounding section of the map will be fully revealed, showing all collectibles, activities, and points of interest.
- Fast Travel Point: The fort becomes a fast travel location, allowing for quick navigation across the map.
- Reduced Enemy Presence: Enemy naval patrols and Man O' Wars will be significantly reduced in the controlled waters around the fort.
- Resources: You'll typically receive a bounty of resources (metal, wood, cloth) upon conquest, essential for Jackdaw upgrades.
- Experience and Money: A substantial amount of experience points and Reales are awarded.
Common Pitfalls & Missables:
- Ignoring Alarms: Allowing guards to sound the alarm makes the on-foot section significantly harder due to constant reinforcements. Prioritize alarm bells!
- Under-upgraded Jackdaw: Attempting forts with a weak Jackdaw will result in frustrating naval battles. Invest in Hull Armor and Mortar Strength.
- Rushing the On-Foot Section: While tempting, rushing into direct combat with large groups of guards can quickly lead to desynchronization. Use stealth and environmental advantages.
- Missing 100% Sync: If you accidentally use broadsides or swivel guns on the fort's walls during the naval phase, you will fail the 100% sync objective. You'll need to restart the memory to try again.
Mastering fort assaults is a cornerstone of your pirating career in Black Flag. With these strategies, you'll be able to conquer any stronghold the Templars or the British throw at you, expanding your dominion over the Caribbean!
