Beginner Tips & Tricks
Welcome, Misthios, to the vibrant and dangerous world of Ancient Greece! Assassin's Creed Odyssey is a massive RPG, and navigating its early hours effectively can set you up for a much smoother and more enjoyable journey. This comprehensive guide will equip you with the essential knowledge and strategies to thrive from the moment you step onto Kephallonia.
Prioritize Main Quests & Unlocking Core Mechanics
While the allure of exploration is strong, resist the urge to immediately wander off the beaten path. Your primary goal in the early game should be to advance the main story quests. These quests are not just for narrative progression; they are crucial for unlocking fundamental game mechanics, abilities, and even entire regions.
- The Early Chapters: Focus on the quests on Kephallonia, particularly those involving Markos, Phoibe, and your family. These will introduce you to combat, stealth, and the world map.
- Unlocking the Adrestia: One of the most critical early unlocks is your ship, the Adrestia. This happens naturally by progressing through the main questline on Kephallonia. Without it, you cannot leave the starting island or engage in naval combat, a core pillar of the game.
- Ability Points & Engravings: Main quests often reward significant amounts of XP, leading to faster level-ups and more ability points. These points are vital for unlocking powerful skills that will define your playstyle.
Mastering Exploration & Fast Travel
Greece is vast, and efficient travel is key. Don't underestimate the power of synchronization and the Adrestia.
- Synchronize Viewpoints: As soon as you enter a new area or spot a tall, prominent structure (often marked by an eagle icon on your compass), make it your priority to climb and synchronize. This action:
- Reveals a portion of the map, showing points of interest.
- Unlocks a fast travel point, allowing you to instantly warp back to that location from anywhere on the map.
- Provides a small XP boost.
- use Ikaros: Your loyal eagle companion, Ikaros, is more than just a pretty face. Use him frequently (press up on the D-pad or 'V' on PC) to scout ahead. Ikaros can:
- Tag enemies, revealing their level and type.
- Locate quest objectives and points of interest.
- Identify treasure chests and valuable resources.
- Mark targets for assassination or ranged attacks.
- The Adrestia: Once unlocked, your ship becomes your primary mode of inter-island travel. Upgrade it whenever possible, focusing on hull strength and ramming power initially. Naval combat can be challenging, but mastering it is rewarding.
Loot Everything & Manage Your Inventory
Resources are the lifeblood of your progression in Odyssey. Never leave a stone unturned (literally!).
- Scavenge Relentlessly: Every fallen enemy, every chest, every resource node (wood, iron, obsidian, animal hides) should be looted. These materials are essential for:
- Gear Upgrades: Improving your weapons and armor at a blacksmith.
- Ship Upgrades: Enhancing the Adrestia's capabilities.
- Engravings: Applying powerful buffs to your gear.
- Dismantle or Sell? This is a common early-game dilemma. Generally, for common (blue) and rare (purple) gear that you don't plan to use, it's often better to dismantle them for crafting materials. Epic (gold) and Legendary (orange) gear should usually be sold unless you plan to use them, as they fetch a higher price. Early on, materials are more valuable than Drachmae.
- Check Blacksmiths: Visit blacksmiths regularly. They can upgrade your gear, apply engravings, and sometimes sell valuable resources or unique items.
Early Game Combat & Abilities
Combat in Odyssey is dynamic and requires a good understanding of your abilities. Don't just button mash!
- Choose Your Playstyle: Odyssey offers three distinct playstyles: Hunter (ranged), Warrior (melee), and Assassin (stealth). While you can mix and match, it's wise to focus your early ability points on one or two trees that align with how you prefer to play.
- Essential Early Abilities:
- Spartan Kick (Warrior): Unlocks early and is incredibly useful for knocking enemies off ledges, interrupting powerful attacks, and creating space.
- Rush Assassination (Assassin): Allows you to chain assassinations, making clearing enemy camps much faster and more efficient.
- Devastating Shot (Hunter): A powerful ranged attack that can one-shot weaker enemies or deal significant damage to stronger ones.
- Second Wind (Warrior/All): Your primary healing ability. Prioritize unlocking and upgrading this early. It's a lifesaver!
- Parry & Dodge: Mastering these defensive maneuvers is crucial. A successful parry (L1/LB on console, Q on PC) stuns enemies, opening them up for a counter-attack. Dodging (Circle/B on console, Space on PC) allows you to avoid incoming damage.
- Exploit Weaknesses: Pay attention to enemy types. Shield-bearers are vulnerable to heavy attacks or shield breaks. Archers should be dealt with first.
Navigating the World & Avoiding Pitfalls
Greece is beautiful but can be unforgiving if you're not careful.
- Don't Underestimate Levels: Enemies significantly higher level than you will be marked with a red skull. Engaging them is usually a death sentence. Stick to areas appropriate for your level.
- Mercenaries: As you commit crimes (killing civilians, stealing), a bounty will be placed on your head, attracting powerful mercenaries. These are challenging fights, especially early on. You can pay off your bounty at a blacksmith or kill the bounty sponsor to remove it. Sometimes, however, fighting a mercenary can yield excellent gear.
- Conquest Battles: These large-scale battles unlock later in the game. While exciting, they can be overwhelming if you're under-leveled or poorly equipped. Approach them cautiously.
- Side Quests: While main quests are priority, don't ignore all side quests. Many offer valuable XP, Drachmae, and sometimes unique gear. Look for quests with a gold exclamation mark, as these are often more substantial.
- Ainigmata Ostraka: These are riddles found throughout the world. Solving them leads to unique engravings that can significantly boost your gear. Keep an eye out for them!
By following these tips, you'll be well on your way to becoming a legendary Misthios. May your blade be sharp and your adventures epic!
