Arena Challenges
The Arena, located in the Grand Herodotos Amphitheater on the volcanic island of Pephka, offers a thrilling gauntlet of combat challenges against the most formidable mercenaries and beasts in all of Greece. Conquering these trials is not only a testament to your prowess but also a lucrative path to experience, Drachmae, and powerful gear. This guide will prepare you for every brutal encounter.
Accessing the Arena
To unlock the Arena, you must first progress through the main story until you encounter the quest "A Fight With Talos." This quest will lead you to Pephka and introduce you to the Arena's proprietor, Barnabas's nephew, Drakon. Completing this initial quest will grant you access to the full range of Arena challenges.
Arena Structure and Rewards
The Arena is structured into tiers, each featuring a series of five opponents. The first four opponents in each tier are powerful mercenaries, often accompanied by various animal companions or environmental hazards. The fifth and final opponent is always a unique, named champion, significantly tougher than the preceding challengers. Defeating each opponent earns you:
- Experience Points (XP): Crucial for leveling up and unlocking new abilities.
- Drachmae: The primary currency for upgrades, engravings, and purchasing items.
- Gear: Often Epic or Legendary rarity, tailored to your current level.
- Mercenary Rank Progression: Defeating Arena champions contributes to your overall mercenary rank, unlocking better bounties and discounts.
General Arena Strategies
Success in the Arena hinges on preparation and adaptability. Here are some universal tips:
- Gear Optimization: Before each fight, review your gear. Prioritize engravings that boost your preferred damage type (Warrior, Hunter, Assassin) and offer defensive bonuses like health or armor. Consider equipping a Legendary set that complements your playstyle, such as the Spartan War Hero Set for Warrior builds or the Artemis Set for Hunter builds.
- Ability Loadout: Tailor your active abilities to the upcoming fight.
- Warrior Abilities: Second Wind is essential for healing. Overpower Attacks are excellent for burst damage and breaking enemy defenses. Ring of Chaos can create space and stun multiple opponents.
- Hunter Abilities: Devastating Shot for high single-target damage. Multi-Shot for clearing groups of weaker enemies or hitting multiple targets.
- Assassin Abilities: While less direct in open combat, Hero Strike can deal significant damage to a single target.
- Consumables: Always stock up on temporary buffs from the Blacksmith or through crafting. Warrior Damage Boost, Hunter Damage Boost, and Assassin Damage Boost elixirs can turn the tide.
- Environmental Awareness: The Arena often features environmental hazards like fire pits or spike traps. Use these to your advantage by luring enemies into them.
- Dodge and Parry: Mastering these defensive maneuvers is paramount. Dodging allows you to avoid unblockable attacks, while parrying creates openings for counter-attacks.
- Focus Fire: When facing multiple enemies, prioritize weaker archers or animal companions first to reduce incoming damage.
Champion-Specific Strategies
Each champion presents a unique challenge. Here's a breakdown of some notable early champions and how to defeat them:
Kleon the Fierce (First Champion)
- Location: Pephka Arena, first champion of the first tier.
- Threats: Kleon is a straightforward warrior who hits hard. He often brings a few regular soldiers with him.
- Strategy:
- Clear Adds: Immediately focus on eliminating Kleon's accompanying soldiers. A well-placed Ring of Chaos or a few quick melee attacks can dispatch them quickly.
- Dodge and Counter: Kleon's attacks are telegraphed. Dodge his heavy swings and counter with your own.
- Overpower Attacks: Once his health is low, unleash Overpower Attacks to finish him off swiftly.
- Healing: Don't hesitate to use Second Wind if your health drops significantly.
The Smuggler (Second Champion)
- Location: Pephka Arena, first champion of the second tier.
- Threats: The Smuggler is a swift, dual-wielding mercenary who relies on quick attacks and dodging. He may also deploy smoke bombs to disorient you.
- Strategy:
- Aggressive Pressure: Don't let him dictate the pace. Stay close and apply constant pressure.
- Parry Focus: His quick attacks are ideal for parrying. A successful parry will stun him, allowing for a few free hits.
- Smoke Bomb Counter: If he uses a smoke bomb, immediately dodge away from the cloud or use a wide-area attack like Ring of Chaos to hit him if he's still within range.
- Hero Strike: If you've invested in Assassin abilities, a well-timed Hero Strike can deal massive damage to his health bar.
The Beast of Pephka (Third Champion)
- Location: Pephka Arena, first champion of the third tier.
- Threats: This champion is a large, powerful animal, often a bear or a lion, sometimes accompanied by smaller predatory animals.
- Strategy:
- Hunter Abilities: This is where your Hunter abilities shine. Use Devastating Shot and Multi-Shot to deal damage from a distance, especially if smaller animals are present.
- Maintain Distance: The Beast's melee attacks are devastating. Keep your distance and only close in for quick melee combos after it has committed to an attack.
- Dodge Rolls: Focus on dodging its charges and pounces.
- Fire Arrows: If you have fire arrows equipped, they can apply a damage-over-time effect, slowly chipping away at its health.
Remember, the Arena is a test of skill and preparation. Don't be afraid to experiment with different gear and ability combinations. With enough practice, you'll rise through the ranks and become the undisputed champion of Pephka!
