Prologue: Debt Collector
Welcome, Misthios, to the sun-drenched world of Ancient Greece! The "Debt Collector" quest serves as your initial foray into the vast and dangerous Peloponnesian War. This prologue acts as a crucial tutorial, introducing you to the core mechanics of combat, stealth, exploration, and the overarching narrative of your chosen hero, Alexios or Kassandra. Pay close attention, as mastering these fundamentals early will set you up for success throughout your epic journey.
Quest Giver and Initial Briefing
Your adventure begins on the idyllic island of Kephallonia. The quest is automatically triggered after the introductory cinematic. Your first task is to speak with Markos, a jovial but somewhat unscrupulous merchant who has taken you under his wing. You'll find him near your humble abode in the village of Sami. Markos will task you with collecting two overdue debts: one from a group of unruly thugs at Kleta's Hold and another from the more elusive Duris.
Objective 1: Collect Debt from Kleta's Hold
Your first destination is Kleta's Hold, a small bandit encampment located a short distance northwest of Sami. This encounter is designed to introduce you to the game's combat system.
Navigating to Kleta's Hold
- From Markos, head northwest along the main path. You can follow the quest marker on your compass and map.
- As you approach, the game will prompt you to use your Ikaros (your eagle companion) to scout the area. Press Up on D-Pad (console) or V (PC) to summon Ikaros.
- Use Ikaros to tag enemies, identify lootable chests, and locate the debt target. This is an invaluable tool for planning your approach, whether you prefer stealth or direct confrontation.
Combat Tutorial: Kleta's Hold Thugs
There are typically 3-4 Thugs guarding Kleta's Hold. This is your first taste of direct combat. The game will introduce you to basic combat mechanics:
- Light Attack: R1/RB (console) or Left Mouse Button (PC). Use for quick strikes.
- Heavy Attack: R2/RT (console) or Right Mouse Button (PC). Slower but deals more damage and can break enemy defenses.
- Dodge: Square/X (console) or Spacebar (PC). Crucial for avoiding incoming attacks. Dodge into attacks to get behind enemies for counter-attacks.
- Parry: L1/LB (console) or Q (PC). Time this just before an enemy attack lands to stun them, leaving them vulnerable to a counter-attack. A successful parry is indicated by a slow-motion effect.
- Healing: Left on D-Pad (console) or G (PC). You have a limited number of healing charges (usually 3 at this stage). Use them wisely.
Strategy Tips for Kleta's Hold:
- Stealth Approach (Recommended): This is an excellent opportunity to practice stealth. Use the tall grass and environmental cover to your advantage.
- Approach from the high ground if possible.
- Use Ikaros to mark all enemies.
- Perform Stealth Attacks (Triangle/Y or E) on isolated enemies. This often results in an instant kill or significant damage.
- Lure enemies away from groups by whistling (Down on D-Pad or Z).
- Direct Combat Approach: If you prefer to fight head-on, focus on one enemy at a time.
- Prioritize enemies with ranged weapons (archers) if any are present, as they can chip away at your health from a distance.
- Practice your parries and dodges. These are fundamental to surviving larger engagements.
- Don't be afraid to use your Heavy Attack to break enemy shields or guard.
- Loot Everything: After defeating the thugs, loot their bodies for Drachmae (currency), crafting materials (Iron, Wood, Leather), and potentially new gear. There's also usually a chest or two within the encampment.
Collecting the Debt
Once the area is clear, locate the specific thug who holds the debt. He will be marked by a quest objective. Interact with him to collect the debt. This will often involve a short dialogue exchange.
Objective 2: Collect Debt from Duris
Your second target, Duris, is a bit more of a challenge, as he's located in a more populated area and requires a slightly different approach.
Navigating to Duris
- Duris is found at Duris's House, located directly south of Sami, near the coastline.
- Again, use Ikaros to scout the area before approaching. You'll notice Duris is often accompanied by a few guards.
Stealth Tutorial: Duris's House
This encounter is an excellent opportunity to refine your stealth skills, as a direct assault can be more difficult with multiple guards in close proximity.
- Approach from the rear or sides: Duris's house often has less guarded entry points from the back or cliffsides.
- use the environment: Tall grass, bushes, and even rooftops can provide excellent cover.
- Assassinate Guards: Prioritize stealth assassinating the guards around Duris. This will make the final confrontation much easier.
- Non-Lethal Takedowns: If you prefer not to kill, you can use a non-lethal takedown (L3 + R3 or C on PC when prompted after a stealth approach) to knock out enemies. This is useful for certain quest objectives later in the game, but for this prologue, lethal is perfectly acceptable.
Strategy Tips for Duris:
- Isolate Duris: Try to eliminate his guards one by one using stealth.
- Direct Confrontation: If stealth fails, be prepared for a fight. Duris himself isn't a formidable opponent, but his guards can be. Focus on Duris first if possible to end the encounter quickly.
- Loot: loot Duris's house for any chests or valuable items.
Collecting the Debt
Once Duris and his guards are dealt with, interact with Duris to collect the debt. This will conclude the collection portion of the quest.
Returning to Markos
With both debts collected, return to Markos in Sami. He will be pleased with your work and reward you for your efforts. This conversation will also provide further narrative context and hint at the larger journey ahead.
Rewards and Progression
Completing "Debt Collector" will grant you the following:
- XP: A significant amount of experience points, helping you level up early.
- Drachmae: Your primary currency for purchasing gear, upgrades, and services.
- Basic Gear: You'll likely acquire some common (grey) or rare (blue) quality weapons and armor from looting enemies and chests. Equip the best gear you find to improve your stats.
- Unlocks: This quest serves as the gateway to the next main quest, "A Seafaring Life," which introduces you to naval combat and exploration.
Common Pitfalls & Important Notes
- Don't Rush: Take your time to learn the combat and stealth mechanics. The early game is forgiving, allowing you to experiment.
- Loot Everything: Seriously, loot every enemy and every chest. Resources are vital for upgrading your gear.
- Equip New Gear: Always check your inventory for better weapons and armor. Green arrows indicate an upgrade.
- Use Ikaros: Make a habit of using your eagle before entering any hostile area. It provides crucial tactical information.
- Save Frequently: The game auto-saves, but it's always a good idea to manually save before difficult encounters or after significant progress.
