Enemy Types & Tactics

As Shay Patrick Cormac, you'll encounter a diverse array of enemies, each demanding unique tactical approaches. Understanding their strengths, weaknesses, and behaviors is crucial for survival and successful mission completion. This section details the various enemy types you'll face and provides actionable strategies to overcome them, whether through stealth or direct combat.

Standard Infantry

These are the most common enemies you'll encounter. They are lightly armored and typically carry muskets or swords. While individually not a significant threat, large groups can quickly overwhelm you.

  • Tactics:
    • Stealth: Standard Infantry are easily dispatched with Hidden Blade assassinations from cover (bushes, haystacks, corners). Air assassinations are also highly effective.
    • Combat: In open combat, they are vulnerable to counter-attacks and disarms. Use your Combat Tactics to chain kills and maintain your combo. The Pistol is effective for quick ranged takedowns.
    • Environmental: Look for opportunities to use environmental hazards, such as dropping barrels or collapsing structures, to take out multiple enemies at once.

Brutes

Brutes are heavily armored and wield large, powerful weapons like axes or two-handed swords. They are slow but hit hard and cannot be counter-killed directly.

  • Tactics:
    • Stealth: A direct stealth assassination from behind with the Hidden Blade is the most efficient way to eliminate a Brute. Air assassinations are also effective.
    • Combat:
      • Disarm: The primary strategy in open combat is to disarm them. Counter their attacks and then press the disarm button (usually 'B' on Xbox, 'Circle' on PlayStation) to take their weapon. Once disarmed, they become much easier to defeat with their own weapon or your own.
      • Pistol Stun: A well-aimed shot from your Pistol can stun a Brute, allowing for follow-up attacks.
      • Smoke Bombs: Deploying a Smoke Bomb can disorient Brutes, giving you an opening for a quick assassination or to escape.

Snipers

Snipers are positioned on rooftops and other high vantage points, armed with long-range rifles. They pose a significant threat, especially during stealth missions, as their shots can instantly alert nearby guards and deal considerable damage.

  • Tactics:
    • Prioritization: Always prioritize eliminating Snipers first, especially in areas with high enemy density or during stealth sequences.
    • Stealth Approach: Climb to their location and perform a stealth assassination. Use cover to avoid detection as you approach.
    • Ranged Elimination: If a stealth approach is not feasible, use your Pistol or Air Rifle with Sleep Darts or Berserk Darts to neutralize them from a distance. A headshot with the Pistol is a one-shot kill.
    • Eagle Vision: Use Eagle Vision to spot Snipers from afar and plan your approach.

Officers / Captains

These enemies are often better armored than standard infantry and can sometimes detect you more easily. They may also carry unique weapons or have special abilities, such as calling for reinforcements.

  • Tactics:
    • Stealth: Like other enemies, they are vulnerable to stealth assassinations.
    • Combat: Officers often have slightly more health and may require a few more hits to take down. They are generally susceptible to the same combat tactics as standard infantry, but be wary of their potential to rally other guards.
    • Disrupt Reinforcements: If an Officer attempts to call for reinforcements, quickly interrupt them with a tackle, a ranged attack, or a quick melee combo.

Grenadiers

Grenadiers are distinguished by their heavy coats and the grenades they carry. They can throw explosive devices that deal area-of-effect damage and can flush you out of cover.

  • Tactics:
    • Evade Grenades: When you see a Grenadier preparing to throw, quickly move out of the blast radius. A red indicator will often appear on the ground showing the grenade's landing zone.
    • Close the Distance: Grenadiers are less effective at close range. Rush them to engage in melee combat, where they are vulnerable to standard attacks and counter-attacks.
    • Ranged Takedowns: Use your Pistol or Air Rifle to eliminate them before they can throw their grenades, especially if they are at a distance.

Stalkers (Assassin Hunters)

A unique and dangerous enemy type in Assassin's Creed Rogue, Stalkers are former Assassins who have turned against the Templars. They hide in bushes, haystacks, and other common hiding spots, attempting to ambush Shay.

  • Detection:
    • Whispers: You'll hear distinct whispers when a Stalker is nearby. The intensity of the whispers increases as you get closer.
    • Eagle Vision: Use Eagle Vision frequently in areas where whispers are heard. Stalkers will appear with a red outline, even when hidden.
  • Tactics:
    • Counter-Ambush: Once detected (either by whispers or Eagle Vision), approach their hiding spot cautiously. When the "Counter-Ambush" prompt appears, press the indicated button (usually 'B' on Xbox, 'Circle' on PlayStation) to perform a quick counter-kill.
    • Smoke Bombs: If you're having trouble locating a Stalker, throwing a Smoke Bomb into a suspected hiding spot can force them out into the open, making them vulnerable.
    • Environmental Awareness: Pay close attention to your surroundings, especially in dense foliage or crowded areas. Stalkers often patrol specific routes.

Naval Enemies (Ships)

While not human enemies, opposing ships are a constant threat in the North Atlantic and River Valley. They come in various sizes and armaments.

  • Tactics:
    • Ship Upgrades: Prioritize upgrading the Morrigan's hull, broadside cannons, swivel guns, and round shot. The Puckle Gun is excellent for targeting weak points and quickly destroying smaller vessels.
    • Weak Points: Aim for the enemy ship's weak points (indicated by glowing red areas) with your swivel guns for critical damage.
    • Ramming: Use the Reinforced Ram to inflict heavy damage on smaller and medium-sized ships.
    • Boarding: Boarding allows you to capture resources and repair your ship. Eliminate all enemy crew members, destroy their flag, and cut down their mast to successfully board.
    • Environmental Hazards: Utilize icebergs and rogue waves to your advantage, either for cover or to damage enemy ships.
