Basic Controls & Movement
Mastering Arno Dorian's movement is paramount in the bustling, vertical world of 18th-century Paris. Whether you're scaling Notre Dame, silently traversing rooftops, or making a swift escape through the crowded streets, fluid and precise parkour is your greatest asset. This section will guide you through all fundamental movement controls, ensuring you can navigate the city with the grace and efficiency of a true Assassin.
General Movement
- Left Analog Stick (PS4/Xbox One): Controls Arno's direction of movement. A slight tilt will make Arno walk, while a full tilt will make him run.
- Right Analog Stick (PS4/Xbox One): Controls the camera. Use it to survey your surroundings, spot enemies, or plan your next parkour route.
- Walk: Gently tilt the Left Analog Stick. This is ideal for stealth, blending into crowds, or moving precisely in tight spaces.
- Run: Fully tilt the Left Analog Stick. Arno will pick up speed, which is essential for covering ground quickly or initiating parkour.
- Controlled Jump: Press X (PS4) / A (Xbox One) while moving. This allows Arno to perform a small hop or jump over low obstacles without initiating a full parkour sequence. Useful for precise platforming or avoiding minor hazards.
Free Running (Parkour)
Assassin's Creed Unity introduces a refined parkour system, allowing for more controlled ascents and descents. Understanding the difference between "Free Run Up" and "Free Run Down" is crucial for seamless navigation.
Free Run Up (Ascending)
This mechanic allows Arno to automatically climb, vault, and scale obstacles in his path, making vertical traversal incredibly fluid.
- Button Combination: Hold R2 (PS4) / RT (Xbox One) while moving forward with the Left Analog Stick.
- Functionality: Arno will automatically grab ledges, climb walls, vault over railings, and navigate upward paths. This is your primary method for reaching rooftops, scaling buildings, and ascending structures quickly.
- Strategy Tip: Look where you want to go. The game's parkour system is context-sensitive; Arno will generally attempt to move towards the direction you're facing and inputting with the Left Analog Stick.
Free Run Down (Descending)
A new and vital addition, Free Run Down provides a controlled and graceful way to descend buildings and structures without taking fall damage or having to find specific descent points.
- Button Combination: Hold L2 (PS4) / LT (Xbox One) AND Circle (PS4) / B (Xbox One) while moving with the Left Analog Stick.
- Functionality: Arno will automatically find handholds, slide down ropes, and perform controlled drops to descend structures. This is far safer and faster than simply jumping off.
- Common Pitfall: Simply holding L2/LT without pressing Circle/B will not initiate a controlled descent; Arno will just hang from ledges. Always remember the full button combination for a smooth descent.
- Strategy Tip: Use Free Run Down to quickly escape pursuers by dropping several stories, or to access lower areas of a building discreetly.
Camera Controls
Effective camera control is essential for situational awareness and planning your next move.
- Right Analog Stick (PS4/Xbox One): Manually rotate the camera around Arno.
- L1 (PS4) / LB (Xbox One): Centers the camera behind Arno. Useful for quickly re-orienting yourself.
- Click Right Analog Stick (PS4/Xbox One): Toggles Eagle Vision (covered in detail in the "Stealth & Detection" section).
Environmental Interaction
Arno can interact with various environmental elements to aid his movement and stealth.
- Cover: When near a wall or object, press Circle (PS4) / B (Xbox One) to snap to cover. This is crucial for stealth, allowing Arno to peek around corners and remain hidden from sightlines.
- Vault/Climb: While running, Arno will automatically vault over low obstacles or climb small ledges. For larger obstacles, use Free Run Up.
- Blend: When near groups of civilians or specific blend spots (like benches), Arno can automatically blend in, making him harder for guards to spot. Move slowly or stand still in these areas.
Practice these controls in less hostile areas of Paris to get a feel for Arno's flow. The environment is your playground, and efficient, fluid movement is key to escaping patrols, reaching objectives swiftly, and truly embodying the role of an Assassin.
