Gameplay Mechanics

Welcome, Assassin, to the heart of revolutionary Paris! Mastering the intricate mechanics of Assassin's Creed Unity is paramount to navigating its treacherous streets and achieving your objectives. This section will delve into the core gameplay systems, offering actionable strategies and detailed breakdowns to hone your skills.

Movement & Navigation

Paris is a sprawling, vertical playground. Efficient movement is key to both stealth and escape. Arno's parkour system is fluid, but requires precision.

  • Parkour Up: Hold R2 (PS4) / RT (Xbox One) and push the left analog stick forward. Arno will automatically vault over obstacles, climb walls, and ascend structures. For faster ascent, aim for ledges and handholds highlighted in white.
  • Parkour Down: Hold R2 (PS4) / RT + O (PS4) / B (Xbox One) and push the left analog stick down. This initiates a controlled descent, allowing Arno to quickly climb down buildings or drop safely to lower platforms. Always look for haystacks or market stalls below for cushioned landings.
  • Free Run: Simply holding R2 (PS4) / RT allows Arno to move quickly through the environment, automatically navigating minor obstacles. Use this for general traversal between mission objectives.
  • Controlled Jump: Press X (PS4) / A (Xbox One) while running to perform a controlled jump. Useful for precise leaps between rooftops or over small gaps.
  • Fast Travel: Once discovered, viewpoints (tall structures marked on your map) can be synchronized to unlock fast travel points. Open your map and select a synchronized viewpoint to instantly warp there, saving valuable time.

Notoriety & Stealth

The streets of Paris are heavily patrolled. Maintaining a low profile is often more effective than direct confrontation.

Notoriety System

Your notoriety level is indicated by a meter on your HUD. Higher notoriety means guards are more alert and will recognize you more easily.

  • Reducing Notoriety:
    • Tearing Down Posters: Look for "Wanted" posters of Arno plastered on walls throughout the city. Interacting with them (O / B) will reduce your notoriety significantly. These are often found near guard patrols or high-traffic areas.
    • Bribing Heralds: Heralds are marked on your map with a small coin icon. Pay them a small sum of Livres (O / B) to temporarily reduce your notoriety. This is a quick fix but can be costly.
    • Completing Missions: Successfully finishing main story missions or certain side quests can also decrease your notoriety.
    • Losing Line of Sight: Breaking a guard's line of sight and hiding for a period will eventually reset their alert status and reduce your notoriety.

Stealth Tactics

Stealth is your most potent weapon. use the environment and Arno's abilities to remain undetected.

  • Cover System: Press X (PS4) / A (Xbox One) near a wall or object to enter cover. This makes Arno harder to spot and allows for silent corner assassinations.
  • Crowd Blending: Blend into groups of civilians by walking slowly among them. This will make Arno appear as a civilian to guards, allowing you to pass undetected. Look for groups of 3 or more people.
  • Smoke Bombs: An invaluable tool for both offense and defense. Throw a Smoke Bomb (L1 / LB) to disorient guards, allowing for quick escapes or silent assassinations within the cloud. Purchase these from any General Store or Craft them at a Social Club.
  • Cherry Bombs: These small explosives create a loud noise, distracting guards and drawing them to a specific location. Use them to create openings or lure enemies away from your path. Equip them via your gear wheel and throw with L1 / LB.
  • Phantom Blade: A silent, ranged weapon ideal for taking out isolated guards without alerting others. Aim with L1 / LB and fire with R1 / RB. Upgrade its damage and range at the Social Club.
  • Eagle Vision: Press L3 (PS4) / LS (Xbox One) to activate Eagle Vision, highlighting enemies, objectives, and interactive elements through walls. Use it frequently to plan your approach and identify patrol routes.

Assassination & Combat

While stealth is preferred, combat is inevitable. Master Arno's fighting style to emerge victorious.

Combat Basics

  • Parry: Press O (PS4) / B when an enemy's attack indicator flashes yellow. A successful parry will stagger the enemy, opening them up for a counter-attack.
  • Dodge: Hold X (PS4) / A and move the left analog stick to dodge incoming attacks. Useful against unblockable attacks (indicated by a red flash) or when facing multiple opponents.
  • Attack: Press Square (PS4) / X (Xbox One) to perform light attacks. Hold for heavy attacks, which can break guard.
  • Finishing Moves: When an enemy is low on health, a prompt may appear to execute a finishing move, instantly eliminating them.

Assassination Opportunities

Many main assassinations offer unique "opportunities" to make your kill more efficient or dramatic. Always scout the area thoroughly using Eagle Vision and look for these prompts.

  • Distraction Opportunities: These involve creating a diversion to draw the target or their guards away. For example, in the mission "The King of Beggars," you can ignite a fireworks display to create chaos.
  • Infiltration Opportunities: These provide unique ways to access restricted areas. In "The Temple," you might find a secret entrance through the catacombs.
  • Unique Kill Opportunities: These allow for cinematic and often easier assassinations. For instance, poisoning a target's drink or pushing them from a high ledge.

Always approach assassination targets with patience. Observe patrol patterns, identify isolated guards, and use your tools to create the perfect opening.
