Assassination & Combat

Mastering both stealthy assassinations and direct combat is crucial for survival and success in the tumultuous streets of revolutionary Paris. While stealth is often the preferred and most rewarding approach, knowing how to handle a direct confrontation can save your life.

Stealth Assassinations: The Art of the Silent Kill

The core of an Assassin's Creed game lies in its assassinations. Unity introduces more complex environments and opportunities for creative takedowns. Always prioritize stealth to maintain a low profile and achieve 100% synchronization on missions.

Planning Your Approach

  1. Reconnaissance is Key: Before engaging, use Eagle Vision (press L3 on PlayStation, LS on Xbox) to highlight enemies, their patrol paths, and key interactive elements like alarm bells or haystacks.
  2. Identify Opportunities: Look for "Assassination Opportunities" marked on your map and in-game. These often provide unique, cinematic, and stealthy ways to eliminate your target. Examples include blending with crowds, utilizing environmental hazards, or creating diversions.
  3. Utilize Disguises: Some missions, like the Marie Levesque assassination in the Luxembourg Palace, offer opportunities to don disguises. This can allow you to walk freely through restricted areas, setting up perfect close-range assassinations.

Executing the Kill

  • Cover Assassination: While hidden behind cover (e.g., a wall, cart), wait for an enemy to approach, then press the attack button (Square on PlayStation, X on Xbox) to perform a silent takedown.
  • Corner Assassination: Similar to cover assassinations, but performed from around a corner.
  • Air Assassination: From a vantage point above an enemy, press the attack button to drop down and eliminate them instantly. This is highly effective against isolated targets.
  • Ledge Assassination: While hanging from a ledge, wait for an enemy to pass above, then press the attack button to pull them down silently.
  • Blend Assassination: When blended with a crowd or sitting on a bench, target an enemy and press the attack button for a discreet kill.
  • Phantom Blade: For ranged, silent takedowns, equip the Phantom Blade. Aim with L2/LT and fire with R2/RT. Upgraded versions can fire multiple blades or poison darts, making them invaluable for thinning out groups or creating diversions.
  • Smoke Bombs: If you're detected during an assassination attempt, immediately deploy a Smoke Bomb (select from your tool wheel and press R1/RB). This disorients enemies, allowing you to escape or perform quick, silent kills in the confusion.

Direct Combat: When Stealth Fails

Despite your best efforts, direct combat is sometimes unavoidable. Unity's combat system emphasizes parrying and dodging over brute force. Engaging more than 3-4 enemies at once is extremely risky, especially early in the game.

Combat Fundamentals

  1. Parry (Circle/B): This is your primary defensive move. Press the parry button just as an enemy's attack is about to land (when their weapon flashes yellow/red). A successful parry stuns the enemy, opening them up for a counter-attack.
  2. Dodge (X/A + Direction): Use this to avoid unblockable attacks (indicated by a red glow around the enemy). Dodging can also reposition you to flank enemies or create distance.
  3. Attack (Square/X): Standard attacks. Combine with parries for effective counter-attacks.
  4. Heavy Attack (Hold Square/X): Breaks enemy guards and deals more damage, but is slower and leaves you vulnerable. Use sparingly or after a successful parry.
  5. Stun Grenades: A valuable tool in open combat. Throw a Stun Grenade (select from tool wheel, aim L2/LT, throw R2/RT) to temporarily incapacitate multiple enemies, giving you time to escape or pick them off.

Advanced Combat Tips

  • Prioritize Shooters: Enemies with firearms (muskets) are a significant threat. Close the distance quickly or use ranged weapons like the Pistol or Phantom Blade to eliminate them first.
  • Environmental Kills: Look for opportunities to use the environment to your advantage. Exploding barrels, falling chandeliers, or collapsing structures can clear groups of enemies quickly.
  • Disengage and Re-stealth: If overwhelmed, use Smoke Bombs or sprint away to break line of sight and re-enter stealth. This allows you to pick off enemies one by one or escape entirely.
  • Weapon Choice: Your weapon's stats (damage, parry, speed) significantly impact combat. Invest in higher-tier weapons like the Heavy Falchion or Schiavona from merchants as you progress.
  • Skills: Unlock combat skills early on. The Thief skill line offers abilities like Disguise and Lockpicking that can prevent combat, while the Brawler line enhances your direct fighting capabilities.
