Crafting & Resources

In Assassin's Creed Valhalla, mastering resource acquisition and crafting is crucial for Eivor's journey to establish a thriving settlement and overcome formidable foes. Unlike some RPGs, Valhalla's crafting focuses primarily on upgrading your gear and expanding your Ravensthorpe settlement, rather than creating new items from scratch. This guide will detail how to efficiently gather the necessary materials and utilize them for maximum benefit.

Understanding Resource Types

Resources in Valhalla fall into several key categories, each serving a distinct purpose:

  • Raw Materials: Essential for constructing and upgrading buildings in your Ravensthorpe settlement. These are primarily obtained through raiding monasteries and large military camps.
  • Supplies: Also used for settlement upgrades, but in smaller quantities than Raw Materials. Supplies are found in chests throughout the world, often in smaller camps, villages, and hidden caches.
  • Leather: A common material used for upgrading armor and certain weapon types.
  • Iron Ore: Another common material, vital for upgrading weapons and some armor pieces.
  • Titanium: A rarer, high-tier material required for upgrading equipment to its highest levels.
  • Carbon Ingots, Nickel Ingots, Tungsten Ingots: These are critical for upgrading the quality (rarity) of your gear, increasing its base stats and unlocking additional rune slots.

Acquiring Resources

Raiding for Raw Materials & Supplies

Raids are your primary source of Raw Materials and a significant source of Supplies. Look for the distinctive red axe icon on your world map to identify raid locations. These are typically monasteries or large military installations. To initiate a raid:

  1. Approach the Location: Sail your longship close to the raid site.
  2. Initiate Raid: Press the designated button (e.g., Square on PlayStation, X on Xbox) when prompted to start the raid. Your crew will disembark and assist you.
  3. Locate Chests: During a raid, look for large, golden chests. These contain Raw Materials and a substantial amount of Supplies. You'll need the help of your Jomsvikingr crew to open these heavy chests.
  4. Loot Everything: loot smaller chests and enemies for additional Supplies, Leather, and Iron Ore.

Strategy Tip: Prioritize raiding early in the game to quickly gather Raw Materials for essential settlement buildings like the Blacksmith and Barracks. Repeatedly raiding the same location is not possible; once a raid is completed, its resources are depleted.

Exploration & Scavenging

Beyond raids, diligent exploration is key to accumulating other resources:

  • Leather & Iron Ore:
    • Hunting: Kill animals (deer, boar, wolves, bears) and loot their carcasses for Leather.
    • Mining: Look for sparkling rock formations (ore deposits) in caves, along cliffs, and in rocky areas. Strike them with any weapon to extract Iron Ore.
    • Chests: Small chests found in bandit camps, abandoned houses, and hidden spots frequently contain Leather and Iron Ore. Use your Odin's Sight to highlight nearby loot.
  • Titanium: This rare material is typically found in higher-level regions or as drops from powerful enemies and Zealots. Keep an eye out for it in wealth chests in more dangerous territories.
  • Ingots (Carbon, Nickel, Tungsten):
    • Carbon Ingots: Found in early-game regions like Rygjafylke, Ledecestrescire, and Grantebridgescire. They are often rewards from solving mysteries, completing world events, or found in wealth chests.
    • Nickel Ingots: Appear in mid-game regions such as East Anglia, Oxenefordscire, and Sciropescire. Similar to Carbon Ingots, they are primarily found in wealth chests and as rewards.
    • Tungsten Ingots: The rarest of the ingots, found exclusively in high-level regions like Hamtunscire and Snotinghamscire. These are crucial for fully upgrading Mythical gear. Prioritize collecting these once you reach the endgame.

Strategy Tip: Always use your raven, Synin, to scout areas from above. Synin can tag resource nodes, chests, and enemies, making your gathering efforts far more efficient. Odin's Sight (V on PC, L3 on consoles) is also invaluable for highlighting nearby interactable objects.

Utilizing Your Resources

Settlement Upgrades at Ravensthorpe

Raw Materials and Supplies are exclusively used for building and upgrading structures in your Ravensthorpe settlement. Each building offers unique benefits:

  • Blacksmith: Allows you to upgrade your weapons and armor. Requires Raw Materials and Supplies.
  • Barracks: Recruit Jomsvikingr and customize your raiding crew. Requires Raw Materials and Supplies.
  • Hidden Ones Bureau: Unlocks assassination contracts and provides lore. Requires Raw Materials and Supplies.
  • Seer's Hut: Access the Dream World (Asgard/Jotunheim) questlines. Requires Raw Materials and Supplies.
  • Many other buildings offer various buffs, services, and cosmetic options. Prioritize the Blacksmith, Barracks, and Hidden Ones Bureau early on.

Equipment Upgrades at the Blacksmith

Once you've built the Blacksmith in Ravensthorpe, you can upgrade your weapons and armor. There are two main types of upgrades:

  1. Quality Upgrades (Rarity):
    • This process increases the rarity tier of your gear (e.g., Fine to Superior, Superior to Flawless, Flawless to Mythical).
    • Each quality upgrade requires a specific Ingot:
      • Fine to Superior: Requires 1x Carbon Ingot.
      • Superior to Flawless: Requires 1x Nickel Ingot.
      • Flawless to Mythical: Requires 1x Tungsten Ingot.
    • Increasing an item's quality unlocks additional upgrade slots and often a new rune slot.
  2. Stat Upgrades:
    • Within each rarity tier, you can further enhance your gear's stats (Attack, Stun, Speed, Critical Chance for weapons; Armor, Evasion, Light Resistance, Heavy Resistance for armor).
    • These upgrades primarily consume Leather and Iron Ore.
    • Higher-tier stat upgrades will also require Titanium.
    • Each piece of gear has a set number of stat upgrade pips within its current quality tier. Once all pips are filled, you must perform a Quality Upgrade to continue improving its stats.

Strategy Tip: Focus on upgrading a few favored weapons and armor pieces rather than trying to upgrade everything. This conserves your valuable Ingots, Leather, Iron Ore, and Titanium. Consider the unique perks of each gear piece when deciding what to invest in.
