Choices & Consequences
While Assassin's Creed Valhalla doesn't feature a branching narrative with drastically different endings based on every decision, certain key dialogue choices and actions can significantly impact character relationships, quest outcomes, and even the availability of specific gear or allies. This section details critical junctures where your choices as Eivor carry weight, providing actionable steps and outlining the resulting consequences.
Rygjafylke: Styrbjorn's Crown
During your early days in Norway, a pivotal moment arises concerning Styrbjorn's crown. This decision sets the tone for your relationship with Sigurd and can influence later events in England.
- The Choice: After the successful raid on Kjotve's fortress, Styrbjorn offers his crown to Sigurd. You will be presented with two main options:
- "Let Sigurd have the crown." (Default/Passive)
- "Take the crown for yourself." (Aggressive/Challenging)
- Consequences:
- Choosing "Let Sigurd have the crown": This is the recommended path for maintaining a positive relationship with Sigurd. He will appreciate your deference, and this choice contributes positively to the "Sigurd's Trust" meter, which is crucial for achieving the "good" ending. There are no immediate negative repercussions.
- Choosing "Take the crown for yourself": Sigurd will be deeply offended by your perceived challenge to his authority. This action will significantly decrease "Sigurd's Trust," making it harder to secure the preferred ending later in the game. While it offers no tangible in-game benefit, it establishes Eivor as more ambitious and less loyal to their brother.
- Strategy: Unless you are deliberately aiming for a more antagonistic relationship with Sigurd or wish to explore a "bad" ending path, always choose to let Sigurd have the crown.
Grantebridgescire: Soma's Betrayer
In Grantebridgescire, you'll aid Soma in reclaiming her longhouse from Wigmund. A traitor among her inner circle must be identified, and your choice has lasting implications for Soma and her clan.
- The Quest: "The Stench of Treachery"
- Location: Grantebridge, Grantebridgescire
- The Suspects: After investigating the clues (the yellow paint trail, the destroyed longship, and the hidden tunnel), you'll interview Soma's three lieutenants: Birna, Lif, and Galinn.
- Clues to Consider:
- Yellow Paint: Found near the longhouse and leading away from it. Lif is a painter and uses yellow pigments.
- Destroyed Longship: Galinn was supposed to be guarding the longship but claims he was elsewhere.
- Hidden Tunnel: Birna was aware of this secret passage.
- Galinn's Behavior: He seems overly eager to accuse others and speaks of visions.
- The Choice: You must accuse one of the three lieutenants as the traitor.
- Accuse Birna
- Accuse Lif
- Accuse Galinn
- Correct Answer & Consequences:
- Accuse Galinn: This is the correct choice. Galinn is the true traitor, driven by a warped sense of destiny and visions.
- Outcome: Galinn will be executed by Soma. Birna and Lif will remain loyal members of Soma's inner circle. Birna will later join your Raven Clan as a Jomsvikingr, available for raids and River Raids, and can be recruited to your crew at the Ravensthorpe docks. This is the optimal outcome for Soma and for strengthening your own forces.
- Accuse Birna or Lif: Accusing either of these loyal lieutenants is incorrect.
- Outcome: The accused will be executed, and Soma will eventually realize her mistake when Galinn later betrays her again or disappears. This will leave Soma distraught and weaken her clan, and you will miss out on Birna joining your crew. This negatively impacts Soma's arc and your potential allies.
- Accuse Galinn: This is the correct choice. Galinn is the true traitor, driven by a warped sense of destiny and visions.
- Strategy: Pay close attention to the environmental clues and the dialogue during your investigations. Galinn's erratic behavior and the evidence pointing to his negligence with the longship are key indicators.
East Anglia: Oswald's Coronation
In East Anglia, you'll help Oswald secure his claim to the throne. A critical decision arises during his coronation regarding the fate of Rued.
- The Quest: "Wedding Horns"
- Location: Elmenham, East Anglia
- The Choice: After defeating Rued, you have two options for his fate:
- "Kill Rued." (Execute him)
- "Send Rued to Oswald." (Allow Oswald to judge him)
- Consequences:
- Choosing "Kill Rued":
- Outcome: Rued is permanently removed. Finnr, a loyal warrior of Oswald, will be pleased and will join your Raven Clan as a Jomsvikingr, available for your longship crew and raids. This is generally considered the more straightforward and beneficial path for Eivor's clan.
- Choosing "Send Rued to Oswald":
- Outcome: Rued will appear at Oswald's coronation and challenge him to a duel. You will then have to fight Rued again. If you defeat Rued a second time, Oswald will banish him. Finnr will be less pleased with this outcome and will not join your crew immediately. However, if you choose to let Oswald fight Rued himself (which is a difficult fight for Oswald), and Oswald wins, Finnr will still join you. If Oswald loses, Rued kills him, and the East Anglia alliance is in jeopardy. This path is more complex and carries higher risks.
- Choosing "Kill Rued":
- Strategy: For a simpler and more guaranteed positive outcome (securing Finnr for your crew), choose to kill Rued immediately. If you enjoy an additional challenge and want to see Oswald assert his authority, sending Rued to him is an option, but be prepared for a second confrontation.
