Archers & Ranged Enemies

Archers and other ranged enemies pose a unique threat by attacking from a distance, often from elevated positions or behind cover. Their primary function is to harass and weaken You before they can engage in melee combat, or to provide supporting fire for other enemy units. In Assassin's Creed Valhalla, the Saxon Archers found on ramparts or in watchtowers are a prime example. They typically wield bows, crossbows, or sometimes even thrown weapons like javelins. Their attacks can inflict sificant damage, especially if multiple archers are targeting You simultaneously. A common mistake is to underestimate their threat and attempt to rush them directly through open ground, exposing yourself to a hail of projectiles. Instead, utilizing cover is paramount. Ducking behind walls, crates, or other environmental objects can break their line of sight and prevent them from firing. Abilities like the Eagle Vision (or its equivalent in later titles, such as Odin's Sight in Valhalla) are invaluable for identifying the locations of these ranged threats, even through walls, allowing you to plan your approach. When engaging archers, a swift and decisive action is often best. Using a ranged attack of your own, such as a thrown dagger or a bow shot, can quickly neutralize them. In Assassin's Creed Odyssey, the Hunter ability Devastating Shot can often one-shot an archer from a considerable distance. If you must close the distance, use parkour to quickly ascend to their position or approach from an unexpected angle. Be aware that some archers may carry specialized arrows, such as fire arrows or poison arrows, which add an additional layer of danger. These can inflict damage over time or create hazardous areas. Always prioritize eliminating archers before they can inflict critical damage or alert larger groups of enemies. Their accuracy can be surprisingly high, especially at closer ranges, so maintaining movement and using cover are your best defenses.

  • Primary Weapon: Bows, crossbows, thrown weapons.
  • Threat: High damage from range, can harass and weaken players.
  • Tactics: Utilize cover, prioritize elimination with ranged attacks or swift melee.
  • Vulnerabilities: Often lightly armored, susceptible to stealth takedowns if approached carefully.

When dealing with a large group of ranged enemies, consider using area-of-effect abilities that can disrupt their aim or force them out of cover. For example, a well-placed Poison Cloud in Assassin's Creed Origins can damage multiple archers at once. If you find yourself pinned down, a Smoke Bomb can provide the necessary cover to reposition or escape. Remember that while they are dangerous from afar, they are often vulnerable up close, making a surprise aerial assassination a highly effective tactic if you can reach them undetected.
