Managing Notoriety

In the world of Assassin's Creed, your actions have consequences, and drawing too much attention from the authorities can quickly turn a stealthy infiltration into a desperate fight for survival. The Notoriety system, present in various forms across the series, dictates how aggressively guards and patrols will pursue you. Understanding how to manage and reduce your Notoriety is paramount for maintaining the element of surprise and executing your assassinations cleanly.

When you are detected committing crimes, such as open combat, assassinating guards in plain sight, or failing stealth objectives, your Notoriety level will increase. This is often visually represented by a series of icons or a meter on your HUD. As your Notoriety rises, more guards will be alerted to your presence, patrols will become more frequent and heavily armed, and elite units, like the Templar Order's enforcers or Roman Legionaries, may be dispatched to hunt you down. In games like Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, the presence of Borgia patrols becomes sificantly more dangerous with higher Notoriety.

To reduce your Notoriety, you typically need to perform specific actions. The most common method is to break line of sight with pursuers and hide. Finding a secluded hiding spot, such as a haystack, a crowd of civilians, or a desated safe house, will allow your Notoriety to gradually decrease over time. In some titles, you can actively reduce Notoriety by bribing town criers or paying off guards at specific locations. For example, in Assassin's Creed Revelations, you can bribe town criers in Constantinople to lower your wanted level. Alternatively, successfully evading pursuit for a sustained period will also cause your Notoriety to dissipate. It is crucial to be aware of your current Notoriety level and to employ these evasion and reduction tactics proactively to avoid overwhelming odds, especially when attempting challenging missions or exploring dangerous territories like the Roman Forum.

  • Break line of sight with enemies and utilize hiding spots (haystacks, crowds).
  • Seek out and interact with town criers or bribe officials to reduce Notoriety.
  • Successfully evade pursuit for a sustained period.
  • Be mindful of your Notoriety level before engaging in risky activities.
