Skill Checks
Skill checks are a fundamental mechanic in Baldur's Gate 3, determining the success or failure of actions in dialogue, exploration, and even combat. These checks are based on your character's abilities and proficiencies, adding an element of chance and consequence to your decisions.
When a skill check is triggered, a prompt will appear on your screen, displaying the relevant skill (e.g., Investigation, Persuasion, Athletics), the Difficulty Class (DC) you need to meet or beat, and the dice roll. Your character's relevant ability score modifier and any proficiency bonuses are added to the dice roll. For instance, a character with a high Charisma score will have a better chance of succeeding on Persuasion checks.
There are several types of skill checks:
- Passive Skill Checks: These occur automatically based on your character's inherent abilities and are often highlighted in the dialogue log. They don't require a manual roll.
- Active Skill Checks: These are presented as dialogue options or actions that require you to roll a die. You'll see the potential outcome and the DC.
- Advantage/Disadvantage: Certain conditions or abilities can grant you advantage (roll two dice and take the higher result) or disadvantage (roll two dice and take the lower result) on a skill check.
Failing a skill check doesn't always mean a dead end. Often, there are alternative paths or consequences that can lead to different outcomes. Sometimes, failing a check might even open up new, unexpected opportunities or reveal hidden information. The game is designed to accommodate various approaches, so a failed check is rarely a game-breaking event.
For example, during the 'Escape the Nautiloid' quest, an Investigation skill check on a pool can reveal crucial information. If you fail, you might have fewer options, but the game will often provide alternative ways to proceed. Understanding which skills are tied to which checks and how to optimize your character's build to excel in them is key to maximizing your success rate and experiencing the full breadth of the game's content.
Skill checks are also present in environmental interactions, such as attempting to jump over a gap (Athletics) or disarm a trap (Sleight of Hand). Mastering these checks is essential for looting, navigating, and overcoming obstacles throughout your adventure.
