The world of Amn is teeming with a diverse and often deadly array of creatures. Understanding your foes is paramount to survival and success in Baldur's Gate II. This section details common and significant monster types, offering tactical advice, notable encounters, and valuable loot.

Aberrations

These bizarre and often psionically gifted creatures defy natural classification. They are frequently encountered in subterranean environments or areas touched by otherworldly influence.

• Mind Flayers (Illithids):
  • Lore: Psionic masterminds that feed on brains. They are highly intelligent and often have thralls. Immune to many mind-affecting spells.
  • Strategy: Prioritize disrupting their psionic attacks (e.g., Psionic Blast, Mind Blast) which can stun or charm your party. Spells like Chaos or Confusion can turn their thralls against them. Melee characters should be protected from their brain-devouring attacks. Consider using ranged attacks and spells that bypass magic resistance.
  • Notable Encounters: Underdark (Mind Flayer City), Planar Sphere.
  • Loot: Often carry valuable gems, scrolls, and occasionally unique items like the Mind Flayer Brain (quest item) or Githyanki Silver Sword (from their Githyanki thralls).
• Beholders:
  • Lore: Floating, spherical monstrosities with a central eye and multiple eyestalks, each capable of casting powerful spells. Highly magic resistant.
  • Strategy: Their anti-magic ray from the central eye is devastating. Engage them from outside its cone of effect if possible. Use summons (e.g., Mordekainen's Sword, Planetars) as distractions. Spells like Greater Malison followed by Lower Resistance can help land offensive spells. Melee characters with high magic resistance or items like the Shield of Balduran (reflects rays) are invaluable.

  • Strategy: Liches are immune to many low-level spells and physical damage from non-magical weapons. Cast Protection from Undead on your cleric to allow them to turn the lich. Use Lower Resistance and Pierce Magic to strip their defenses. Spells like Contingency, Chain Contingency, and Time Stop are common tactics for liches, so be prepared with defensive spells like Spell Trap or Spell Turning. Melee characters need highly enchanted weapons (+3 or better).
  • Notable Encounters: Temple District Sewers (Kangaxx), Planar Sphere, Watcher's Keep.

Dragons

• Firkraag (Red Dragon):
  • Lore: A powerful red dragon, master of fire, guarding the treasure of the Windspear Hills.
  • Strategy: Firkraag is immune to fire. Equip your party with fire resistance items (e.g., Ring of Fire Resistance, Cloak of the Shield). Use defensive spells like Protection from Evil 10' Radius, Stoneskin, and Protection from Magical Weapons. His breath weapon is devastating. Spread your party out. Use summons as distractions.
