Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn is brimming with powerful artifacts and essential gear. Knowing where to find these items can dramatically impact your party's effectiveness. This section details the locations and acquisition methods for some of the most sought-after equipment in the early to mid-game.
Chapter 1: Irenicus' Dungeon
Even in the depths of Irenicus' torture chamber, valuable items can be found. Keep a keen eye out and be thorough in your exploration.
- Long Sword +1: This basic magical weapon is a good early upgrade.
- Location: Found in a locked chest within the first major area of the dungeon, often guarded by a Mephit portal.
- Acquisition: Requires a character with high Open Locks skill (like Imoen) or a Knock spell to access.
- Chainmail +1: A solid armor upgrade for your frontline fighters.
- Location: Inside a container in one of the cells where you find Yoshimo.
- Acquisition: Simply loot the container after freeing Yoshimo or exploring the cell block.
- Ring of Protection +1: An excellent defensive accessory for any character.
- Location: Carried by one of the Mephit Portal Keepers you defeat.
- Acquisition: Loot the corpse of the specific Mephit Portal Keeper after combat.
Chapter 2: Athkatla City & Surrounding Areas
Once you escape Irenicus' clutches, Athkatla and its environs open up, offering a wealth of opportunities for gear acquisition. Prioritize these early upgrades to prepare for tougher challenges.
Waukeen's Promenade
- Mithral Token: While not an item itself, this is crucial for a powerful early-game weapon.
- Location: Carried by the Shadow Thief leader, Gaelan Bayle, in his house.
- Acquisition: You must pay Gaelan Bayle 20,000 gold pieces to secure his aid and progress the main quest. The token is given to you as part of this transaction.
- Blade of Roses +3 (Two-Handed Sword): A fantastic early-game two-handed sword with a charm ability.
- Location: Can be forged at the Copper Coronet.
- Acquisition: Speak to the proprietor of the Copper Coronet, Bernard. Present him with the Mithral Token you received from Gaelan Bayle. He will then offer to forge the Blade of Roses for you.
Slums District
- Cloak of Protection +1: Another vital defensive item, especially for mages or rogues.
- Location: Found within the sewers beneath the Slums, specifically in a hidden area accessible after dealing with the Slavers.
- Acquisition: Explore the sewer network thoroughly. You'll likely encounter a group of Kuo-Toa. The cloak is often found in a chest or on a defeated enemy in their lair.
- Flail of Ages +3 (Flail): One of the best early-game weapons, dealing elemental damage.
- Location: This is a multi-part quest. You need to find three heads.
- Acid Head: Found in the Planar Sphere, accessible via the Slums.
- Cold Head: Located in the sewers beneath the Temple District, often guarded by a powerful Otyugh or similar creature.
- Fire Head: Discovered in the Ust Natha (Underdark) area, but can be acquired earlier through specific quests.
- Acquisition: Once all three heads are collected, take them to Cromwell in the Docks District. He will forge the Flail of Ages +3 for a fee.
- Location: This is a multi-part quest. You need to find three heads.
Docks District
- Cromwell's Forging Services: While not an item, Cromwell is essential for upgrading many unique weapons.
- Location: Cromwell's smithy is located in the Docks District, near the north-eastern part of the map.
- Acquisition: Simply approach his smithy. He will offer his services to combine magical components into powerful artifacts, such as the Flail of Ages or the Celestial Fury. Be prepared to pay a significant gold fee for his work.
