World Map & Travel

Navigating the sprawling world of Amn is a core part of your adventure in Baldur's Gate II. Understanding the World Map and how travel mechanics work is crucial for efficient questing, resource management, and avoiding unnecessary dangers. This section will detail how to use the map, manage travel, and offer strategies for traversing the Sword Coast.

Accessing the World Map

The World Map is your primary tool for moving between different areas of Amn. You can access it by:

  • Clicking the "World Map" button on the main UI (usually located near your portrait or the journal icon).
  • Moving your party to the edge of an area map. A prompt will appear asking if you wish to travel to the World Map. Confirming this will take you to the global view.

Once on the World Map, you'll see various named locations. Areas you've already visited will be highlighted and accessible for instant travel. New, undiscovered areas will appear as you progress through the main storyline or receive information from NPCs.

Types of Travel

There are two primary methods of travel once you're on the World Map:

  1. Instant Travel (Discovered Areas):
    • For any location you have previously visited, simply click on its icon on the World Map. Your party will instantly appear at the entrance of that area. This is the most common and efficient way to move between known locations, especially within Athkatla.
    • Strategy: Always try to discover new areas, even if just briefly, to unlock them for instant travel later. This saves significant time compared to overland travel.
  2. Overland Travel (Undiscovered or Distant Areas):
    • To reach a new area or a distant, previously visited area that requires traversing the wilderness, click on its icon. A dotted line will appear, showing your projected path. Confirm your destination.
    • Your party will then begin to "walk" across the World Map. Time will pass rapidly during this process.
    • Random Encounters: While traveling overland, there is a chance of encountering hostile creatures or random events. These encounters can range from trivial to dangerous, so ensure your party is well-rested and prepared.
    • Avoiding Encounters: While you cannot entirely eliminate random encounters, choosing shorter paths between locations can reduce the chances. Certain quests or companions might also temporarily influence encounter rates.
    • Resting: You can choose to rest during overland travel by clicking the "Rest" button. This is useful for healing, memorizing spells, and refreshing abilities, but it also increases the time spent traveling and the chance of random encounters.

Key Locations and Early Game Travel Strategy

In the early stages of the game, particularly after escaping Irenicus' Dungeon, your primary hub will be Athkatla. Understanding its districts and how to navigate them is paramount.

  • Athkatla Districts:
    • Slums District: Your starting point after the dungeon. Contains the Copper Coronet (a vital early hub for quests and companions like Korgan, Mazzy, and Valygar), the Den of Seven Vales, and various quest givers.
    • Waukeen's Promenade: Home to Adventurer's Mart (essential for buying and selling gear, including powerful items like the Cloak of the Sewers and Ring of Protection +2), the Circus Tent, and Gaelan Bayle's home.
    • Government District: Features the Council of Six building, the Sea's Bounty tavern, and the main entrance to the Planar Sphere (later in the game).
    • Temple District: Contains temples for various deities (Helm, Lathander, Talos), crucial for healing, resurrection, and spell services. Also houses the entrance to the Sewers.
    • Docks District: A dangerous area at night, but important for quests related to the Shadow Thieves and Mae'Var. Contains the Shadow Thieves Guildhall, the Five Flagons Inn, and access to the Sea's Edge.
    • Bridge District: Features the Crooked Crane Inn, the Tanner's Shop (involved in a gruesome quest), and access to the City Gates.
    • Umar Hills: An early external area accessible via the City Gates, offering significant experience and early powerful items like the Shield of Balduran (from the Shadow Dragon) and the Amulet of Power (from the Temple Ruins).
  • Early Game Travel Priority:
    1. Explore Athkatla: Prioritize visiting all districts of Athkatla to unlock them for instant travel. This makes completing city quests much faster.
    2. Waukeen's Promenade First: After the Slums, head to Waukeen's Promenade to visit the Adventurer's Mart. Stock up on potions, scrolls, and consider early upgrades.
    3. Copper Coronet (Slums): Recruit companions and pick up initial quests.
    4. City Gates to Umar Hills: Once you feel adequately equipped (around level 7-9 for a full party), venture out to Umar Hills. The experience and loot here are invaluable for early power spikes. Be prepared for tough fights, especially in the Temple Ruins and against the Shadow Dragon.

Important Considerations for Travel

  • Time Management: Many quests in BG2 are time-sensitive. Overland travel consumes significant in-game time. Be mindful of quest timers, especially those related to companion quests or major plot points.
  • Party Composition: Ensure your party is well-rounded before embarking on long overland journeys. A balanced group with healing, damage, and crowd control will fare better against random encounters.
  • Supplies: Always carry ample healing potions, antidote, and any quest-specific items you might need. You don't want to be caught unprepared far from a temple or shop.
  • Saving: Save frequently, especially before initiating overland travel to a new or dangerous area. Random encounters can be brutal, and a quick save can prevent lost progress.
  • Fog of War: The World Map initially shows a "fog of war." As you explore and progress through the story, more areas will be revealed, expanding your travel options.
