Upon your arrival, you'll find yourself thrust into a city recovering from a devastating magical plague, where powerful factions vie for control and common folk struggle to survive. Each district of Athkatla presents its own unique challenges, questlines, and a rich tapestry of characters, offering vital experience, gold, and powerful artifacts that will prove indispensable on your journey to escape Irenicus's clutches and reclaim your soul.

Slums District
The Slums are your initial entry point into Athkatla after escaping Irenicus's dungeon. Despite its name, this district is a hub of activity and home to several critical early-game quests and potential companions.
The Circus Tent & Mae'Var's Guild
Your first major quest in the Slums involves the mysterious disappearance of children and a strange circus tent.
- Objective: Investigate the circus tent and rescue the missing children.
- Location: Immediately east of the Copper Coronet.
- Key NPCs:
- Quayle: A former companion from Baldur's Gate I, now a clown, found inside the tent.
- Aerie: A winged elf (avarial) slave, held captive within the circus. She can join your party.
- Walkthrough:
- Enter the circus tent. You'll immediately notice something is amiss.
- Speak with Quayle. He will reveal the illusion and the true nature of the tent's inhabitants.
- Prepare for combat. You will face several Shadow Thieves and a powerful Mage, Kalah.
- Defeat Kalah and his minions. Focus fire on Kalah to prevent him from casting dangerous spells.
- After the fight, speak with Aerie. She is traumatized but grateful. Offer her a place in your party.
- Exit the tent. You'll be approached by a Shadow Thief named Gaelan Bayle, who offers to help you find Irenicus for a hefty sum of 20,000 gold. This initiates the main questline.
- Rewards:
- Experience: Significant XP from combat and quest completion.
- Items: Kalah's equipment (e.g., Quarterstaff +1, Robe of the Archmagi - if you can pickpocket it before he dies or loot it if he drops it).
- Companion: Aerie (Cleric/Mage).
The Copper Coronet
This bustling tavern serves as a central hub for many early quests and introduces several key characters.
- Objective: Resolve the issues within the Copper Coronet, including the beastmaster's arena and the slave trade.
- Location: Central Slums District.
- Key NPCs:
- Lehtinan: The proprietor of the Copper Coronet.
- Hendak: A gladiator slave, leader of the rebellion.
- Korgan Bloodaxe: A dwarven fighter, found in the back room, seeking a lost tome. He can join your party.
- Anomen Delryn: A human fighter/cleric, found debating in the main hall. He can join your party.
- Jaheira: If you imported a save or chose to have her with you, she will be here.
- Walkthrough:
- Upon entering, you'll witness a gladiator fight. Speak to Lehtinan to learn about the arena.
- Head to the back rooms. You'll find Hendak, who reveals the slave trade and asks for your help to free them.
- Agree to help Hendak. He will ask you to kill the Beastmaster.
- Enter the arena area and confront the Beastmaster. He is accompanied by several powerful animals (e.g., trolls, yuan-ti).
- Strategy: Focus on the Beastmaster first. Use area-of-effect spells or ranged attacks to thin out his animal companions. Trolls require fire or acid damage to truly kill.
- After defeating the Beastmaster, return to Hendak. He will lead the slave rebellion.
- You will then need to confront Lehtinan and his guards. This can be a tough fight.
- Strategy: Lehtinan is a decent fighter. Use crowd control spells on his guards.
- Once Lehtinan is defeated, Hendak takes over the Copper Coronet.
- Rewards:
- Experience: Substantial XP for freeing the slaves and defeating the Beastmaster.
- Reputation: +1 Reputation for helping Hendak.

Fallen Paladins of Helm
A group of paladins from the Order of the Radiant Heart has fallen from grace and taken refuge in the Temple of Helm.
- Objective: Investigate the paladins' plight and decide their fate.
- Location: Temple of Helm, Temple District.
- Key NPCs:
- Sir Ryanus: The leader of the fallen paladins.
- Preacher: A representative of the Temple of Helm.
- Walkthrough:
- Enter the Temple of Helm and speak with the Preacher. He will tell you about the fallen paladins.
- Speak with Sir Ryanus. He will explain their situation – they broke their oaths to save innocent lives.
- You have several choices:
- Side with the Temple: Attack and kill the paladins. (Evil/Neutral alignment choice)
- Side with the Paladins: Help them escape. This involves fighting the Temple guards. (Good/Neutral alignment choice)
- Negotiate: If your Charisma is high enough, you might be able to persuade the Preacher to let them go peacefully (requires a high reputation and/or specific dialogue choices).
- Rewards:
- Experience: XP for quest completion, varying based on your chosen path.
- Reputation: +1 Reputation for helping the paladins escape or negotiating a peaceful resolution. -1 Reputation for killing them.
- Items: If you fight the paladins, you can loot their equipment. If you help them, they may give you a small token of gratitude.
Docks District
The Docks District is a grimy, dangerous area, controlled by the Shadow Thieves and frequented by smugglers and pirates. It's a crucial location for advancing the main storyline.
Shadow Thieves vs. Bodhi
This district is the battleground for the ongoing war between the Shadow Thieves and Bodhi's vampire guild, a conflict you'll inevitably be drawn into.
- Objective: Choose a side in the guild war and complete tasks for your chosen faction.
- Location: Shadow Thief Guildhall (north-west Docks) and Bodhi's Lair (Graveyard District, accessible via the Docks).
- Key NPCs:
- Aran Whitehand: Leader of the Shadow Thieves.
- Bodhi: Leader of the vampire guild.
- Yoshimo: A bounty hunter, often found near the Shadow Thief Guildhall. He can join your party.
- Walkthrough (Shadow Thieves Path - Common First Choice):
- After paying Gaelan Bayle 20,000 gold, you'll be directed to the Shadow Thief Guildhall to meet Aran Whitehand.
- Aran will task you with several missions to undermine Bodhi's operations:
- "Retrieve the Shadow Thief's Cache": Infiltrate a warehouse and retrieve stolen goods.
- "Eliminate Mae'Var": Infiltrate Mae'Var's Guild (also in the Docks) and expose or eliminate him. This is a multi-step quest involving several smaller tasks for Mae'Var first.
- "Attack Bodhi's Lair": A direct assault on Bodhi's stronghold in the Graveyard District.
- Mae'Var's Guild Quest:
- Speak to Mae'Var in his guildhall. He'll give you tasks: steal a necklace, plant a dagger, retrieve a scroll.
- Eventually, you'll be tasked with killing Rayic Gethras, a powerful mage.
- Strategy (Rayic Gethras): He is extremely dangerous with powerful offensive spells (e.g., Horrid Wilting, Chain Lightning). Use dispels, silence, and magical protections (e.g., Spell Immunity: Abjuration/Evocation) before engaging. Rush him with melee characters if possible.
- After dealing with Rayic Gethras, return to Mae'Var. You will then have the option to expose him to Renal Bloodscalp (Aran's lieutenant) or kill him directly.
- Complete all of Aran's tasks. This culminates in a raid on Bodhi's Lair.
- Rewards (Shadow Thieves Path):
- Experience: Massive XP from all sub-quests and the final assault.
- Gold: Significant gold rewards from Aran for each completed task.
- Items: Various magical items from enemies, including Mae'Var's equipment (e.g., Short Sword +2, Leather Armor +1). Rayic Gethras drops excellent mage loot.
- Companion: Yoshimo (Bounty Hunter) can join your party early in the Docks.

Government District
The Government District is the seat of power in Athkatla, home to the Council of Six and various influential figures. Access to this district is often restricted until you progress further in the main quest.
The Council of Six
Once you've dealt with the Shadow Thieves/Bodhi conflict, you'll be summoned to the Council of Six to discuss Irenicus and the threat he poses.
- Objective: Gain the support of the Council of Six.
- Location: Council Chambers, Government District.

- Tolgerias: A representative of the Cowled Wizards.
- Various Council Members: Each with their own agenda.
- Walkthrough:
- After completing the Shadow Thief/Bodhi questline, you will be summoned to the Government District.
- Attend the Council meeting. You will need to present your case against Irenicus.
- The Council is hesitant to act directly against Irenicus due to his powerful magic and political influence.
- They will offer you a choice: either seek out the Planar Sphere or investigate the Underdark. This decision significantly impacts the next chapters of the game.

Bridge District
The Bridge District is a more affluent area, featuring shops, residences, and a few intriguing mysteries.
The Skinner Murders
A series of gruesome murders has plagued the Bridge District, with victims found skinned alive.

- Location: Various houses and sewers in the Bridge District.

- Follow the trail into the sewers beneath the Bridge District.

- Upon solving the murders, you will likely be directed towards the Windspear Hills, where the true mastermind (Firkraag) resides.
