The Challenge: Winter is arguably the most consistent and deadly 'boss' in Banished. It brings freezing temperatures, halts most farming, and significantly slows down gathering and hunting. A poorly prepared town will face widespread starvation, illness, and death from exposure.

Strategy: Preparation is key. By late autumn, ensure you have a massive surplus of firewood (at least 150-200 units per house) and food (at least 1000 units per person). Build enough Woodcutters and assign sufficient workers. Diversify your food sources with year-round producers like Hunters, Gatherers, and Fishers. Build a Herbalist to treat winter illnesses. If food or firewood runs low, temporarily reassign laborers to these critical tasks. Pause the game frequently to assess your reserves.
