Endgame Goals & Long-Term Survival
Once your Banished settlement has achieved a stable population and consistent resource production, the true challenge shifts from immediate survival to long-term prosperity and resilience. This endgame guide will walk you through optimizing your town, expanding strategically, and preparing for unforeseen disasters.
I. Optimizing Resource Chains & Infrastructure
Efficiency is key in the late game. Focus on refining your production and distribution networks to minimize labor and maximize output.
- Advanced Food Production: Transition away from basic farming.
- Orchards: Plant several orchards (Apple, Pear, Peach, Cherry) for diverse food sources and reduced risk of crop failure. Aim for at least 2-3 orchards per 100 population.
- Fishing Docks & Hunting Cabins: Strategically place these along rivers and in dense forest areas. Upgrade them with Storage Barns nearby to reduce travel time for workers. Consider building multiple small fishing docks rather than one large one for better coverage.
- Gatherer Huts: Maintain a good number of these in mature forests. Their diverse yield (Berries, Mushrooms, Onions, Roots) provides excellent dietary variety and reduces reliance on single crops.
- Sustainable Forestry: Lumber is a perpetual need.
- Forester Lodges: Build these in clusters of 3-4, ensuring they are set to "Plant Only" for a few years to regrow forests, then switch to "Cut & Plant" for sustainable wood production.
- Woodcutters: Place Woodcutters near Forester Lodges and Storage Barns to efficiently process logs into firewood.
- Mineral Extraction: Ensure a steady supply of Iron and Stone.
- Mines & Quarries: These are finite resources. Plan their placement carefully. Once depleted, you'll rely on the Trader for these materials. Consider building them near the edge of your map to minimize impact on prime building land.
- Blacksmith: Maintain at least one Blacksmith to produce Iron Tools. A shortage of tools can cripple your economy.
- Trade Post Optimization: Your lifeline for rare goods and depleted resources.
- Multiple Trade Posts: Build 2-3 Trade Posts to handle more diverse trade goods simultaneously and increase the frequency of visiting merchants.
- Trade Goods: Focus on producing high-value trade goods like Ale, Wool Coats, or Iron Tools in excess. These fetch good prices and allow you to purchase critical items like Seeds, Livestock, or even Stone/Iron when your local deposits run dry.
- Strategic Storage: Build Storage Barns and Stockpiles directly adjacent to your Trade Posts to minimize worker travel time when loading/unloading goods.
II. Population Management & Education
A healthy, educated population is the backbone of a thriving Banished town.
- Education System:
- Schools: Build enough Schools to ensure every child has access to education. Educated workers are significantly more efficient in all professions. Aim for a School within walking distance of all residential areas.
- Universities (Modded): If playing with mods that introduce universities, prioritize these for even greater worker efficiency and access to advanced building options.
- Healthcare & Happiness:
- Hospitals/Herbalists: Ensure adequate healthcare coverage. Herbalists gather medicinal herbs from forests, while Hospitals (if available) treat more severe ailments. Place Herbalists in mature forest areas.
- Marketplaces: Build Marketplaces centrally within residential zones. They distribute food, firewood, and tools efficiently, reducing travel time for citizens and improving happiness.
- Taverns: Produce Ale at a Brewery and stock it in Taverns. Ale significantly boosts citizen happiness, which in turn improves productivity.
- Cemeteries: Provide a place for the deceased. While not directly impacting production, Cemeteries prevent a happiness penalty from unburied bodies.
- Housing Expansion:
- Stone Houses: Upgrade all Wooden Houses to Stone Houses. Stone Houses are more durable, require less firewood, and provide greater happiness.
- Planned Growth: Don't build too many houses at once. Monitor your population growth and resource production to avoid homelessness or resource shortages. Build in small, manageable increments.
III. Disaster Preparedness & Resilience
Even the most optimized town can be devastated by unforeseen events. Prepare for the worst.
- Redundant Food Sources: As mentioned in optimization, diversify your food production. A blight on one crop won't starve your town if you have ample fish, venison, and gathered goods.
- Firewood Reserves: Always maintain a significant surplus of Firewood (at least 2-3 years' worth) in your Storage Barns. A harsh winter can quickly deplete reserves.
- Tool & Clothing Stockpiles: Keep a healthy stock of Iron Tools and Warm Coats. A lack of tools halts production, and insufficient clothing leads to illness and death during cold snaps.
- Disease Outbreak Response:
- Isolation: If a disease like Smallpox or Influenza breaks out, consider isolating affected areas by temporarily closing roads or assigning all available laborers to healthcare buildings.
- Herbalists/Hospitals: Ensure these are fully staffed and well-supplied with herbs.
- Natural Disasters:
- Tornadoes: There's little direct defense against a tornado, but having redundant infrastructure and scattered storage can mitigate the damage. Don't build all your critical buildings in one dense cluster.
- Blizzards: Ensure ample firewood and warm clothing. Blizzards can last for multiple seasons, severely impacting food production and increasing firewood consumption.
IV. Aesthetic & Expansion Goals
Beyond pure survival, the endgame allows for creative expansion and beautification.
- Monument Building: Construct the various monuments available (e.g., Town Hall, Statue) for aesthetic appeal and a sense of accomplishment.
- Road Networks: Upgrade all dirt roads to Stone Roads. Stone Roads significantly increase worker movement speed, improving efficiency across your entire town.
- Bridge Construction: Expand across rivers to access new resource nodes or create new residential districts. Bridges are expensive but open up new possibilities.
- Terraforming (Modded): If using mods, explore terraforming options to reshape the landscape to your liking, creating more efficient layouts or beautiful vistas.
By focusing on these long-term strategies, your Banished settlement will not only survive but thrive for generations, becoming a testament to your planning and resilience.
