Ending Differences & Consequences

As you near the conclusion of your journey in Bastion, you'll face a pivotal decision that dramatically alters the game's ending and the fate of the remaining survivors. This choice occurs after you've collected all Cores and Shards, confronted the Ura, and returned to the Bastion for the final time. The decision point is explicit and irreversible once made, so choose wisely!

The Final Choice: Restore or Evacuate?

Upon returning to the Bastion with all the necessary components, the Narrator will present you with two distinct options:

  1. Restore the Calamity: This option involves using the Bastion's power to attempt to reverse the effects of the Calamity, bringing the world back to its pre-Calamity state.
  2. Evacuate to a New Land: This option involves using the Bastion's power to transport the survivors to a new, untouched land, leaving the devastated world behind.

Consequences of Each Ending

1. The Restore Ending

Choosing to Restore the Calamity leads to a bittersweet, cyclical conclusion. Here's what to expect:

  • Narrative Outcome: The Bastion unleashes a wave of energy, attempting to undo the Calamity. The screen fades to white, and you witness a brief, poignant montage of the world as it was before the disaster, with glimpses of the characters in their past lives. The Narrator's final words suggest that while the Calamity is reversed, the cycle of destruction and rebuilding is likely to repeat.
  • Character Fates: The survivors (Zulf, Zia, and the Stranger) are shown in their pre-Calamity roles, seemingly unaware of the events that transpired. This implies a reset, where their memories of the journey and the Calamity are erased.
  • Post-Game Content: After the credits, you are returned to the Bastion, but the world outside is reset. All previously collected Cores and Shards are gone, and the game effectively restarts in a New Game+ mode. You retain your character level, weapons, upgrades, and Secret Skills, allowing you to experience the story again with enhanced power. This is the ideal choice for players looking to replay the game with their accumulated strength.
  • Achievements/Trophies: Unlocks the "Restoration" achievement/trophy.
2. The Evacuate Ending

Opting to Evacuate to a New Land offers a more definitive, hopeful, yet uncertain future. Here's what unfolds:

  • Narrative Outcome: The Bastion transforms into a vessel, carrying the remaining survivors (Zulf, Zia, and the Stranger) to a new, pristine world. The journey is depicted as a flight through the void, culminating in their arrival on a vibrant, untouched land. The Narrator speaks of a fresh start, free from the burdens of the past.
  • Character Fates: The survivors arrive together, retaining their memories of the Calamity and their shared journey. They face the challenge of building a new life in an unknown land, but they do so as a united group, having forged bonds through adversity. Zulf's fate is particularly impactful here; if you rescued him during the "Zulf's Last Stand" mission, he will be among the evacuees. If you left him, he will not be present.
  • Post-Game Content: After the credits, the game ends. There is no New Game+ option directly accessible from this ending. To start a new game, you would need to begin a fresh save file. This ending provides a sense of closure to the narrative.
  • Achievements/Trophies: Unlocks the "Evacuation" achievement/trophy.

Important Considerations Before Choosing

  • Zulf's Fate: Your decision regarding Zulf during the "Zulf's Last Stand" mission (whether to carry him to safety or leave him) directly impacts the Evacuate ending. If you saved him, he will be with the other survivors. If you didn't, he will be absent. This choice does NOT affect the Restore ending, as all characters are reset.
  • New Game+ vs. Closure: If you intend to play through Bastion again with your upgraded character, the Restore ending is the clear choice. If you prefer a definitive conclusion to the story and are content with a single playthrough, the Evacuate ending provides that.
  • Emotional Impact: Both endings carry significant emotional weight. The Restore ending is a poignant reflection on cycles and sacrifice, while the Evacuate ending offers a hopeful, albeit uncertain, fresh start.

There is no "better" ending; both are valid and offer unique perspectives on the themes of loss, hope, and rebuilding that permeate Bastion's narrative. Consider which outcome resonates most with your personal interpretation of the story and your desired post-game experience.
