Enemy Types & Weaknesses
Navigating the shattered landscapes of the Calamity requires more than just a sharp weapon; it demands an understanding of your foes. Each creature you encounter in Bastion possesses unique attack patterns, resistances, and crucial weaknesses that, when exploited, can turn the tide of battle. This section will arm you with the knowledge to efficiently dispatch every threat, ensuring your journey through the broken world is as smooth as possible.
Squirt
These small, agile creatures are often the first enemies you'll encounter. While individually weak, they can overwhelm the Kid in numbers. Their primary attack is a short-range lunge.
- Weakness: Area-of-effect (AoE) damage and rapid-fire weapons.
- Strategy:
- For early encounters, the Cael Hammer's wide swing is incredibly effective at clearing groups.
- Once acquired, the Breaker's Bow with its charged shot can pierce through multiple Squirts, or its rapid-fire mode can quickly thin their ranks.
- Consider using the Fire Bellows for its sustained AoE flame, especially when Squirts are clustered.
- The Squirt Lure secret skill, found in the Hanging Gardens, can draw them into a tight group, making them vulnerable to a single powerful attack.
Wallflower
Stationary, plant-like enemies that fire projectiles. They are typically found rooted to the ground, often in elevated positions or behind cover, providing ranged support for other enemies.
- Weakness: Direct, high-damage attacks and precise ranged weapons.
- Strategy:
- The Carbine Repeater is ideal for picking off Wallflowers from a distance, especially if you can get a clear line of sight. Aim for critical hits.
- If you need to close the distance, use your shield to block their projectiles and then unleash a powerful melee combo with the Cael Hammer or War Machete.
- The Mortar, once obtained from the Prosper Bluff, can lob explosive shells over obstacles, making it excellent for dislodging Wallflowers from entrenched positions.
- The Grapple Hook secret skill (found in the Wilds) can pull you directly to their location, allowing for a quick melee takedown.
Stinger
Flying insectoid enemies that dart around, making them difficult to hit. They attack by swooping down and striking the Kid, often in unpredictable patterns.
- Weakness: Fast-firing weapons and weapons with a wide attack arc.
- Strategy:
- The Breaker's Bow is your best friend against Stingers. Its rapid-fire mode can track their erratic movements, and a well-timed charged shot can often take them down in one hit.
- The Repeater's quick shots are also effective, but require more precise aiming.
- For melee approaches, the War Machete's faster attack speed and wider arc compared to the Cael Hammer can connect more reliably.
- The Trip Mine secret skill (located in the Smoking Boneyard) can be placed in their flight path, detonating as they pass by.
Pecker
Large, bird-like creatures that charge directly at the Kid, attempting to knock them back and deal heavy damage. They often appear in open areas.
- Weakness: Counter-attacks, defensive maneuvers, and high burst damage.
- Strategy:
- Timing your shield block just as a Pecker charges will stun it, leaving it vulnerable to a full combo from any weapon. This is the most efficient way to deal with them.
- The Fang Repeater's rapid-fire can interrupt their charge if you start shooting early enough, or quickly deplete their health once they are stunned.
- The Musket, acquired from the Cinder Chamber, delivers powerful single shots that can significantly damage a charging Pecker or finish off a stunned one.
- The Bolt Barrage secret skill (found in the Ura's Greatworks) can unleash a volley of projectiles, effectively stopping a Pecker in its tracks.
Scumbag
Slow-moving, heavily armored creatures that are resistant to most frontal attacks. They often carry large shields or have tough hides, requiring a different approach.
- Weakness: Back attacks, explosive damage, and status effects that bypass armor.
- Strategy:
- The most crucial strategy is to flank them. Use your dodge roll to get behind a Scumbag and attack its exposed back. The War Machete's quick strikes are excellent for this.
- The Mortar is exceptionally good against Scumbags due to its explosive damage, which can bypass some of their armor or hit them from angles that ignore their shields.
- The Fire Bellows can apply burn damage over time, slowly chipping away at their health regardless of their armor.
- The Trip Mine secret skill can be placed directly behind them as you draw their attention, dealing massive damage when they eventually turn.
- The Bull Head Shield, found in the Wilds, allows for a powerful counter-attack after a successful block, which can stun a Scumbag and open it up for a backstab.
