New Game+

Welcome, Kid, to the next chapter of your journey! New Game+ in Bastion isn't just a simple restart; it's an opportunity to revisit the Calamity's aftermath with all your hard-earned progress, tackle new challenges, and uncover every last secret the shattered world holds. This guide will help you navigate the nuances of your second (or third, or fourth!) playthrough.

Initiating New Game+

Upon completing the main story and making your final choice (whether to Restore or Evacuate), you'll be prompted to save your game. Selecting this save file from the main menu will present you with the option to start a New Game+. This carries over a significant portion of your progress, allowing for a much more powerful and strategic approach to the early game.

What Carries Over:

  • Character Level: Your Kid's level and all accumulated experience points remain.
  • Weapons: All weapons you've unlocked are available from the start.
  • Weapon Upgrades: Any upgrades purchased at the Forge for your weapons are retained.
  • Spirits: All Spirits you've discovered and purchased from the Distillery are available.
  • Idols: Crucially, all Idols you've found are accessible from the beginning, allowing for immediate difficulty customization.
  • Mementos: Any Mementos collected are kept.
  • Provisions: All collected Provisions (health potions) carry over.
  • Fragments: While your total Fragment count resets, the ability to earn them again is key for further upgrades.

What Resets:

  • Story Progress: You'll begin at the very start of the game, waking up in the first area.
  • Fragment Count: Your current Fragments will reset to zero, but you'll quickly accumulate more with your powerful arsenal.
  • Skyway Access: All Skyway paths will need to be rebuilt as you progress through the story.

Strategies for Your New Game+ Run

Early Game Dominance

With your full arsenal and high level, the initial stages of New Game+ are an excellent opportunity to experiment with weapon combinations and Spirit loadouts you might not have fully explored in your first playthrough. Consider these points:

  • Weapon Mastery: Focus on mastering weapons you neglected previously. The Cael Hammer and Breaker's Bow, for instance, can be incredibly potent with their final upgrades.
  • Spirit Synergies: Experiment with Spirit combinations. For example, pairing Black Tonics (increased critical hit chance) with weapons like the Repeater or Carbine can lead to devastating damage output.
  • Fragment Farming: Early levels, while easier, still provide Fragments. Use your powerful setup to quickly clear areas and rebuild the Bastion's structures, especially the Forge and Distillery, to further enhance your capabilities.

Embracing the Idols

New Game+ is the perfect time to activate the Idols of the Gods. These difficulty modifiers offer significant challenges and rewards. Activating even a few can drastically change your combat approach.

  • Recommended Idol Combinations:
    • Beginner Challenge (2-4 Idols): Start with Lachrymos (enemies drop fewer healing items) and Hense (enemies have more health). This increases the challenge without overwhelming you.
    • Moderate Challenge (5-7 Idols): Add Jevel (enemies hit harder) and Roathus (enemies are faster). This demands more precise dodging and strategic weapon use.
    • Ultimate Challenge (All 10 Idols): For the truly masochistic, activate all Idols, including Censor (enemies block more often) and Moccus (enemies have a chance to revive). This requires absolute mastery of combat mechanics and weapon switching.
  • Rewards: Each active Idol increases the experience and Fragment rewards from enemies. This accelerates your progress towards max level and allows for quicker purchases of remaining weapon upgrades and Spirits.

Unlocking Remaining Achievements/Trophies

Many achievements are tied to specific conditions that are easier to meet in New Game+:

  • "The More the Merrier": Complete the game with all 10 Idols active. This is the ultimate test of skill and best attempted with a fully upgraded character.
  • "Man-at-Arms": Fully upgrade all 11 weapons. With all Fragments resetting, New Game+ provides ample opportunity to collect the necessary resources. Prioritize upgrading any weapons you missed in your first run.
  • "The Stranger": Complete all 22 Proving Grounds challenges. Your enhanced abilities will make some of the tougher challenges, like the Breaker's Bow Proving Ground or the War Machete Proving Ground, more manageable.
  • "Just Like That": Complete the game without using any Spirits. This is a significant challenge, but your high character level and fully upgraded weapons can compensate for the lack of Spirit buffs.

Important Locations and Considerations

  • The Bastion: Rebuilding the Bastion structures is still crucial. Prioritize the Forge for any remaining weapon upgrades and the Distillery for purchasing any missing Spirits. The Lost-and-Found will also be available for any Mementos you might have missed.
  • Proving Grounds: Revisit all Proving Grounds. Not only do they offer skill challenges, but completing them often rewards you with valuable Fragments and sometimes even new Spirits or Mementos.
  • Dream Levels: The Dream Levels (accessed via the Shrine) are excellent for farming Fragments and experience, especially with Idols active. The enemies here respawn, making them a reliable source of resources.

New Game+ transforms Bastion from a narrative-driven adventure into a true test of combat prowess and strategic planning. Embrace the challenge, experiment with your loadouts, and discover the full depth of the Kid's journey!
