Character Progression & Leveling
In Bastion, your progression as the Kid isn't about traditional experience points or skill trees. Instead, it's a dynamic system built around weapon upgrades, Spirits, Idols, and the ever-important Distiller. Mastering these elements is key to surviving the shattered world and facing increasingly difficult challenges.
The Distillery: Your Source of Power
The Distillery is your primary hub for character enhancement. Here, you'll unlock and equip powerful passive buffs known as Spirits. Each Spirit provides a unique advantage, from increased damage to improved survivability. You can equip up to two Spirits at any given time, so choose wisely based on your current loadout and the challenges ahead.
- Unlocking Spirits: Spirits are typically found as rewards for completing levels, clearing Proving Grounds challenges, or purchasing them from the Lost-and-Found.
- Early Game Recommendations:
- Black Tonic: Increases your maximum health. Essential for early survivability. Found early in the game after completing the first few areas.
- Leaden Quills: Boosts your critical hit chance. Great for increasing overall damage output, especially with fast-firing weapons.
- Werewolf's Bite: Grants a chance to steal health from enemies on hit. Fantastic for sustain during longer encounters.
- Strategic Spirit Swapping: Don't be afraid to change your Spirits before entering a new area or tackling a tough boss. For example, if you're facing many ranged enemies, a Spirit that boosts ranged damage resistance might be more beneficial than one focused on melee.
The Armory: Weapon Upgrades & Customization
The Armory allows you to upgrade your weapons using collected materials. Each weapon has multiple upgrade tiers, and each tier offers a choice between two distinct enhancements. These choices can drastically alter a weapon's effectiveness and how it synergizes with your playstyle.
- Upgrade Materials: You'll primarily find upgrade materials like Fragments, Cores, and Shards by defeating enemies, smashing environmental objects, and opening chests throughout the levels. Pay attention to the types of materials required for your preferred weapons.
- Strategic Upgrades:
- Breaker's Bow: Consider upgrading for increased projectile speed and damage to make it a reliable long-range option. The "Piercing Shot" upgrade can be incredibly useful for clearing groups of enemies.
- Cael Hammer: Focus on increasing its area-of-effect and stun capabilities for crowd control. The "Ground Pound" upgrade is excellent for knocking back multiple foes.
- Repeater: Prioritize fire rate and critical hit chance to maximize its sustained damage. The "Rapid Fire" upgrade makes it a formidable close-to-mid-range weapon.
- Experimentation is Key: Don't be afraid to try different upgrade paths. You can always reset a weapon's upgrades at the Armory for a small fee, allowing you to re-spec and find what works best for you.
The Shrine: Embracing the Idols
For those seeking a true challenge and greater rewards, the Shrine offers the ability to invoke Idols. Each Idol you activate makes the game significantly harder by empowering enemies or introducing new combat modifiers. The more Idols active, the greater the bonus to your experience (Fragments) and the chance of rare item drops.
- Idol Effects:
- Lachrymos: Enemies have more health.
- Hense: Enemies deal more damage.
- Jevel: Enemies drop fewer health pickups.
- Moccus: Enemies move faster.
- When to Use Idols:
- Farming Fragments: If you're looking to quickly accumulate Fragments for weapon upgrades or Lost-and-Found purchases, activating a few Idols on levels you're comfortable with is highly efficient.
- Proving Grounds: Idols can be particularly effective in Proving Grounds challenges, where the increased difficulty can lead to higher scores and better rewards.
- New Game+: In New Game+, activating Idols is almost a necessity to maintain a challenging and rewarding experience.
- Start Small: Begin by activating one or two Idols that you feel comfortable with, such as Lachrymos or Hense, to get a feel for the increased difficulty before attempting more.
Proving Grounds: Skill-Based Progression
Scattered throughout the world are Proving Grounds, special challenge arenas designed to test your mastery of individual weapons. Completing these challenges rewards you with unique Spirits and valuable upgrade materials. These are not just side activities; they are crucial for unlocking powerful character enhancements.
- Location & Rewards:
- Breaker's Bow Proving Ground (Ura's Greatworks): Rewards the Gravedigger's Charm Spirit.
- Cael Hammer Proving Ground (Wild Bastion): Rewards the Squirt's Symphony Spirit.
- Repeater Proving Ground (Prosper Bluff): Rewards the Doppelganger's Toll Spirit.
- Strategy for Success: Each Proving Ground requires a deep understanding of the weapon it features. Pay attention to the challenge objectives and adapt your playstyle accordingly. Don't be afraid to try multiple times and refine your approach. The rewards are well worth the effort.
