Combat Flow & Tactics
Mastering Batman's Freeflow Combat system is paramount to surviving Arkham City. This isn't just about mashing buttons; it's about rhythm, awareness, and strategic gadget use. A high combat score and efficient enemy takedowns rely on maintaining your combo multiplier and adapting to diverse enemy types.
Core Combat Mechanics
- Strike (Square/X): Your basic attack. Chain these together to build your combo.
- Counter (Triangle/Y): Essential for avoiding damage. A blue lightning bolt above an enemy's head indicates an incoming attack that can be countered. Countering maintains your combo.
- Cape Stun (Circle/B): Stuns an enemy, leaving them vulnerable to a Beat Down. Useful for breaking enemy attack patterns or setting up special moves.
- Dodge/Evade (X, X / A, A): Allows Batman to roll over enemies or quickly reposition himself. Crucial for avoiding unblockable attacks (indicated by red lightning bolts) or creating space.
- Ground Takedown (R2 + Triangle / RT + Y): Instantly incapacitates a downed enemy. Use sparingly in large groups as it leaves you vulnerable.
Advanced Techniques & Gadget Integration
As your combo multiplier grows, you'll unlock powerful special moves. These are vital for crowd control and dealing with tougher enemies.
- Special Combo Takedown (Triangle + Circle / Y + B): Instantly defeats a single enemy. Prioritize armored thugs, armed enemies, or those with shields.
- Special Combo Batclaw Slam (L2 + Triangle / LT + Y): Pulls an enemy towards you and slams them, knocking down nearby foes. Excellent for breaking up groups.
- Special Combo Disarm and Destroy (Square + Triangle / X + Y): Disarms an enemy and destroys their weapon (e.g., guns, stun sticks). Crucial for neutralizing threats.
- Special Combo Multi-Ground Takedown (X + Circle / A + B): Incapacitates multiple downed enemies simultaneously. Requires a high combo and careful timing.
Don't forget your gadgets! Integrating them into your combat flow is key:
- Batarang (L2 / LT): Quickly thrown to stun enemies, interrupt attacks, or knock them off balance. Can be upgraded for multiple targets.
- Explosive Gel (R2, R2 / RT, RT): While primarily for environmental destruction, a well-placed gel can knock down groups of enemies.
- Grapple Boost (L1 + X / LB + A): While not a direct combat gadget, using it to quickly reposition or escape a tight spot can be a lifesaver.
- Smoke Pellet (R1 / RB): Creates a cloud of smoke, disorienting enemies and allowing for stealth takedowns or a quick escape. In open combat, it can buy you precious seconds to recover or plan your next move.
Tactical Approaches to Enemy Types
Different enemies require different strategies. Always prioritize threats.
- Standard Thugs: Your bread and butter. Focus on strikes and counters to build your combo.
- Armored Thugs: Immune to regular strikes. Use a Cape Stun followed by a Beat Down (Circle, Square, Square, Square... / B, X, X, X...). Alternatively, a Special Combo Takedown works wonders.
- Shield Enemies: Cannot be attacked from the front. Either jump over them (X, X / A, A) and attack from behind, or use a Cape Stun to open them up. A Special Combo Takedown is also effective.
- Stun Stick Enemies: Cannot be attacked directly. Dodge over them to attack from behind, or use a Special Combo Disarm and Destroy to neutralize their weapon.
- Armed Thugs (Guns): The highest priority. Either use a Special Combo Takedown or a Special Combo Disarm and Destroy. If you can't reach them, use your Batarang to stun them and close the distance, or take cover and use stealth.
- Titan Henchmen: Large, powerful enemies. Focus on dodging their charges, then counter-attacking after they hit a wall or another enemy. Use your quickfire Batarangs to stun them when they prepare for a charge, then follow up with strikes. Once stunned, mount them for a powerful attack that damages other enemies.
Environmental Interactions
Arkham City's environments are often your allies. Look for opportunities to use them:
- Breakable Walls/Floors: Can be used with Explosive Gel to create new paths or surprise enemies.
- Vents: Excellent for stealth takedowns or escaping combat.
- Grates: Similar to vents, offering quick traversal and stealth opportunities.
- Ledges/Gargoyles: Ideal for setting up silent takedowns or dropping into combat with a powerful dive attack.
- Objects (e.g., crates, barrels): Can be thrown at enemies using the Batclaw (L2 + R2 / LT + RT) to stun or knock them down.
Remember, practice makes perfect. The combat system rewards fluidity and quick decision-making. Don't be afraid to experiment with different gadget combinations and special moves to find what works best for your playstyle.
