Challenge Map Strategies
Welcome, Caped Crusader, to the ultimate guide for mastering Arkham City's Challenge Maps! These maps are your proving ground, testing your combat prowess and stealth skills against increasingly difficult waves of enemies or intricate predator scenarios. Achieving those coveted 3-medal ratings requires more than just button mashing; it demands strategic gadget use, environmental awareness, and flawless execution. This section will break down key strategies to help you dominate every challenge.
General Combat Challenge Tips
Combat Challenges focus on your ability to chain together combos, utilize gadgets effectively, and maintain a high score multiplier. Precision and timing are paramount.
- Maintain Your Combo: The core of high scores in Combat Challenges is an unbroken combo. Every hit, counter, and gadget use should flow seamlessly into the next.
- Vary Your Attacks: Don't just punch! Incorporate different moves to increase your score and keep enemies off balance.
- Strike (Square/X): Your basic attack.
- Counter (Triangle/Y): Essential for avoiding damage and maintaining your combo. Watch for the blue indicators!
- Stun (Circle/B): Use this on armored enemies or to set up a Beat Down.
- Cape Stun + Beat Down (Circle/B then Square/X repeatedly): Devastating against single, tough enemies or to quickly eliminate a priority target.
- Aerial Attack (X, X, Square/X): Jump over an enemy, then strike. Great for repositioning or avoiding attacks.
- Gadget Integration: Gadgets are not just for utility; they are crucial for scoring and crowd control.
- Batarang (L1/LB): Quick stun, interrupts enemy attacks, and can be used to maintain a combo from a distance.
- Explosive Gel (L2+Square/LT+X): Excellent for knocking down multiple enemies or quickly taking out a shielded foe.
- Grapple Boost (R2+X/RT+A): Use this to quickly close distances or escape a tight spot.
- Freeze Blast (L2+R2/LT+RT): Temporarily incapacitates enemies, especially effective against armed thugs or those with shields.
- Environmental Takedowns: Look for opportunities to use the environment. Grates, breakable walls, and ledges can all be used for instant takedowns or to gain an advantage.
- Prioritize Threats: Identify and neutralize the most dangerous enemies first.
- Armored Thugs: Require a Cape Stun before they can be damaged.
- Shielded Thugs: Can be disarmed with a Redirected Attack (X, X towards them) or stunned with Explosive Gel.
- Knife Wielders: Counter their attacks carefully; they often have unique attack patterns.
- Taser Wielders: Use a quick Batarang or a well-timed counter to disarm them.
General Predator Challenge Tips
Predator Challenges demand patience, stealth, and strategic use of your environment and gadgets to eliminate armed enemies without being detected. The goal is often to achieve specific "medals" by performing certain takedowns.
- Stay Hidden: Your primary objective is to remain undetected. Use gargoyles, floor grates, and vents to your advantage.
- Detective Mode (L1/LB): Absolutely essential. Use it constantly to track enemy positions, see their line of sight, and identify armed or armored foes.
- Environmental Takedowns: These are your bread and butter for silent, efficient eliminations.
- Inverted Takedown: Hang from a gargoyle and snatch an unsuspecting foe.
- Vent Takedown: Pull enemies into vents from below or ambush them as they pass by.
- Grating Takedown: Similar to vent takedowns, pull enemies through floor grates.
- Ledge Takedown: Grab enemies from ledges and pull them over.
- Wall Takedown: Burst through weak walls to surprise and incapacitate an enemy.
- Gadget Utility: Your arsenal is designed for stealth.
- Sonic Batarang (Hold L1/LB, then R2/RT): Lure enemies to specific locations for easy takedowns. Place it near a vent, grate, or under a gargoyle.
- Remote Electrical Charge (REC) Gun: Can stun enemies, activate generators, or disarm foes from a distance.
- Disruptor: Disable enemy weapons, jam their comms, or sabotage explosive crates. Prioritize disabling sniper rifles and automatic weapons.
- Smoke Pellet (R2/RT + X/A): Provides a quick escape or allows for a multi-takedown opportunity in a pinch.
- Disarm and Destroy: If a medal requires disarming an enemy, use the Disruptor. If it requires destroying a weapon, use Explosive Gel on a dropped weapon.
- Target Priority: Snipers and enemies with jammer packs should be your first targets, as they pose the biggest threat to your stealth.
- Plan Your Route: Before engaging, observe enemy patrol patterns and plan your sequence of takedowns. Think several steps ahead.
