Combat Challenges
Welcome, Caped Crusader, to the ultimate test of your martial prowess! The Combat Challenges in Batman: Arkham City are designed to push your Freeflow Combat skills to their absolute limit. These aren't just brawls; they're intricate puzzles demanding precision, timing, and strategic gadget use. Mastering these challenges is key to unlocking all achievements and proving yourself as the true Dark Knight.
Understanding the Scoring System
Your performance in Combat Challenges is judged on several factors, all contributing to your final score and star rating (up to 3 stars per round):
- Combo Multiplier: The higher your unbroken combo, the more points you accumulate. Prioritize maintaining your combo above all else.
- Variety Bonus: Utilize a wide range of combat moves and gadgets. Don't just punch; incorporate throws, ground takedowns, special combo moves, and environmental takedowns.
- Damage Avoidance: Taking hits significantly reduces your score. Focus on perfect counters and evasive maneuvers.
- Speed Bonus: Completing rounds quickly adds to your score, but not at the expense of your combo or health.
- Special Combo Moves: Executing moves like the Special Combo Takedown, Special Combo Bat Swarm, Special Combo Disarm and Destroy, and Special Combo Multi-Ground Takedown are crucial for high scores and crowd control.
General Strategies for Success
Before diving into specific challenges, internalize these core principles:
- Prioritize Threatening Enemies: Always take out enemies with weapons (guns, knives, stun batons) first. Disarm them with a Disarm and Destroy special combo move or a well-timed Counter.
- Utilize Gadgets Wisely:
- Batarangs:
- Explosive Gel:
- Grapple Boost:
- Freeze Blast:
- Environmental Takedowns: Look for opportunities to use objects in the environment (e.g., hanging lights, electrical boxes, railings). These are instant takedowns and grant significant points.
- Ground Takedowns: Once an enemy is on the ground (from a throw, stun, or special combo), quickly perform a Ground Takedown to eliminate them. Be wary of other enemies interrupting you.
- Master the Counter: The blue counter icon is your best friend. A perfectly timed counter not only blocks an attack but also often stuns the attacker, setting them up for further punishment.
- Freeflow Focus: Once your combo meter is high enough, you'll enter Freeflow Focus, allowing you to execute special combo moves. Don't hoard these; use them strategically to clear crowds or eliminate key threats.
Recommended Upgrades
While not strictly "items," certain upgrades from the WayneTech menu are absolutely essential for maximizing your Combat Challenge scores. Prioritize these:
- Critical Strikes: Increases damage and combo generation.
- Special Combo Boost: Reduces the combo requirement for special moves.
- Blade Dodge Takedown: Essential for dealing with knife-wielding enemies safely.
- Armored Enemies Takedown: Allows you to perform takedowns on armored thugs.
- Disarm and Destroy: Crucial for removing weapons from the equation.
- Gadget Upgrades: Enhance the effectiveness of your Batarangs, Explosive Gel, and Freeze Blast.
Specific Challenge Walkthroughs (Example: Survival of the Fittest)
Each Combat Challenge presents unique enemy waves and environmental layouts. Here's a breakdown for a common early challenge:
Survival of the Fittest (Combat Challenge)
Location: Accessible from the Challenge Mode menu after completing the main story segment in the Steel Mill.
Objective: Survive three rounds of increasingly difficult enemy waves, achieving a high score for 3 stars.
- Round 1: Basic Thugs & Knife Wielders
- Strategy: Start with a Strike to initiate your combo. Immediately look for any knife-wielding enemies. Use a Blade Dodge Takedown if possible, or prioritize them with regular strikes and counters. Maintain your combo by chaining strikes, counters, and Cape Stuns (followed by a few strikes).
- Key Move: Practice your Counter timing. There will be multiple attackers, so be ready to counter from different directions.
- Gadget Use: A quick Batarang can interrupt an enemy about to attack from a distance, allowing you to continue your combo.
- Round 2: Armored Thugs, Stun Batons & More Knives
- Strategy: This round introduces armored enemies and stun batons. Armored thugs require a Cape Stun followed by multiple strikes, or a Special Combo Takedown if available. For stun baton enemies, you must Evade over them to disable their weapon before striking.
- Key Move: Focus on building your combo meter to unlock Special Combo Disarm and Destroy for stun batons and Special Combo Takedown for armored enemies.
- Environmental Takedowns: Look for opportunities to use the hanging lights or other interactive elements to quickly eliminate threats, especially armored thugs.
- Round 3: Heavily Armed, Shielded, and Titan Thugs
- Strategy: This is the ultimate test. Immediately target the Titan thug. Use Explosive Gel or Freeze Blasts to temporarily incapacitate smaller enemies while you focus on the Titan. Once the Titan charges, Evade and then Strike its back. Repeat until it's dazed, then mount it and use it to attack other enemies.
- Shielded Enemies: These require a Cape Stun followed by a Beat Down (repeated strikes) or a Special Combo Takedown.
- Gun-Wielding Thugs: If present, prioritize them with Batarangs to stun, then close the distance for a takedown, or use a Special Combo Disarm and Destroy.
- Crowd Control: Use Special Combo Bat Swarm to buy yourself breathing room when overwhelmed, or Special Combo Multi-Ground Takedown if multiple enemies are on the ground.
Remember, practice makes perfect. Don't get discouraged by initial failures. Analyze your mistakes, refine your approach, and soon you'll be earning those coveted 3-star ratings across all Combat Challenges!
