Stealth Takedowns & Gadget Use
Batman's true strength lies not in brute force, but in his ability to stalk his prey from the shadows, utilizing an arsenal of gadgets to create chaos and pick off enemies one by one. Mastering stealth takedowns and intelligent gadget use is paramount to surviving the more challenging encounters in Arkham City, especially when facing armed thugs or specialized enemy types.
Basic Stealth Takedowns
These are your bread and butter for silent enemy neutralization. Always aim to isolate targets before initiating a takedown.
- Silent Takedown: Approach an unsuspecting enemy from behind (or above, if dropping down) and press the Takedown button. This is your quietest option and ideal for single targets.
- Corner Takedown: While hidden behind a corner, wait for an enemy to patrol past and press the Takedown button. Batman will pull them around the corner for a quick, silent knockout.
- Ledge Takedown: Hang from a ledge and wait for an enemy to walk above you. Press the Takedown button to pull them over the edge. Ensure the drop isn't too high, or they might make a sound upon impact.
- Grating Takedown: When an enemy walks over a floor grate that Batman is hiding in, press the Takedown button to pull them down into the grate for a silent knockout.
- Vent Takedown: Similar to the Grating Takedown, if an enemy is near a vent opening you're inside, you can perform a Takedown.
Advanced Stealth Tactics & Gadget Synergy
Combining your gadgets with environmental opportunities is key to clearing rooms efficiently and without being detected.
Disruptor
The Disruptor is invaluable for neutralizing armed threats and disabling enemy equipment. You'll acquire this early in the game, often after your initial encounters within the Industrial District or the Steel Mill.
- Disabling Firearms: Target an enemy's gun with the Disruptor to temporarily jam it. This is crucial when facing multiple armed thugs, giving you a window to close the distance or reposition.
- Explosive Mine Disablement: In areas like the Museum or the Wonder City section, you'll encounter enemies with proximity mines. Use the Disruptor to disable these mines from a distance, preventing them from being deployed or detonated.
- Disabling Enemy Tech: The Disruptor can also temporarily disable other enemy tech, such as jammers or certain security panels, opening up new stealth routes.
Batarang
The Batarang is more than just a projectile; it's a versatile tool for distraction and stunning.
- Distraction: Throw a Batarang at a distant object (like a wall or a noisy generator) to draw an enemy's attention away from their patrol route. This can create an opening for a Silent Takedown or to bypass them entirely.
- Stun & Follow-up: A quick Batarang throw can stun an enemy, allowing you to close the gap for a quick ground takedown or a combo starter if you're forced into open combat.
- Multi-Batarang: Once unlocked, the Multi-Batarang allows you to stun up to three enemies simultaneously, excellent for creating openings in crowded areas.
Smoke Pellet
Your emergency escape and repositioning tool. You'll typically gain access to Smoke Pellets after progressing through the main story, often around the time you're dealing with the Joker's forces in the Steel Mill.
- Escape & Reposition: If detected, immediately deploy a Smoke Pellet to break line of sight and grapple to a higher vantage point or a new hiding spot.
- Cover for Takedowns: In a pinch, you can use a Smoke Pellet to create cover for a quick ground takedown on a stunned enemy, preventing others from seeing the action.
Explosive Gel
For creating new pathways and environmental takedowns. You'll acquire Explosive Gel relatively early, often during your initial exploration of Arkham City's interior locations.
- Weak Wall Breaching: Look for cracked walls or floors highlighted in Detective Mode. Apply Explosive Gel and detonate it to create new routes or surprise enemies from unexpected angles.
- Environmental Takedowns: In certain predator rooms, you can use Explosive Gel on weak floors to drop enemies into the area below, often leading to an instant knockout.
Remote Electrical Charge (REC)
A powerful tool for environmental manipulation and stunning. The REC is usually acquired during your investigations within the Industrial District or the Sionis Steel Mill.
- Stunning Enemies: Fire the REC at an enemy to temporarily stun them, leaving them vulnerable to a takedown. This is especially effective against enemies with riot shields, as it can temporarily disable their shield.
- Activating Machinery: Use the REC to power up generators, open electronically locked doors, or manipulate other environmental elements to your advantage.
- Magnetizing Objects: In some areas, the REC can be used to magnetize certain metal objects, pulling them towards you or pushing them away, creating distractions or clearing paths.
Predator Room Strategies
Predator rooms are designed for stealth. Always start by entering Detective Mode (press the corresponding button) to identify enemy positions, patrol routes, and armed threats. Look for gargoyles, vents, and grates as your primary movement and hiding spots.
- Gargoyle Perching: Grapple to gargoyles to gain a high vantage point. From here, you can perform Glide Kicks, Inverted Takedowns, or simply observe patrol patterns.
- Inverted Takedown: While hanging from a gargoyle above an enemy, press the Takedown button to string them up silently. This is a classic Batman move and highly effective.
- Vents and Grates: Utilize the extensive network of vents and floor grates to move unseen beneath enemies. This is perfect for setting up Grating Takedowns or simply repositioning.
- Environmental Hazards: Look for opportunities to use the environment against your foes. This could involve dropping heavy objects, short-circuiting electrical panels with the REC, or using Explosive Gel on weak structures.
- One-by-One Approach: Resist the urge to rush. Patience is key. Pick off enemies individually, starting with isolated targets or those with firearms.
