Chapter 3: The Last Stand (War Story: Tirailleur)
Welcome, soldier, to the climactic conclusion of the "Tirailleur" War Story. "The Last Stand" is a brutal, desperate fight for survival and a test of everything you've learned as Deme. This chapter throws overwhelming German forces, including formidable armor and elite infantry, at you in a desperate attempt to break the French line. Success hinges on smart positioning, effective use of anti-tank weaponry, and prioritizing high-threat targets. Prepare for a grueling battle where every bullet counts and every piece of cover is vital.
Mission Objectives:
- Defend the French positions: Hold the line against multiple waves of German attackers.
- Destroy enemy armor: Eliminate incoming Panzer IV tanks and Sturmgeschütz III assault guns.
- Repel the final assault: Survive the overwhelming last push to secure victory.
Recommended Loadout & Strategy:
For this mission, Deme is equipped with a standard French rifle (often the MAS-36 or similar) and a limited supply of anti-tank grenades. Scavenging is crucial. Prioritize weapons that offer good stopping power and a decent rate of fire for infantry, and always keep an eye out for additional anti-tank resources.
- Primary Weapon: Your starting rifle is reliable for infantry. Look for dropped MP 40s or StG 44s from fallen enemies for closer engagements.
- Secondary Weapon: A pistol is a last resort.
- Gadgets: You'll start with a few Anti-Tank Grenades. These are your primary defense against early armor. Conserve them for critical moments. Later, you'll find Panzerschrecks or Panzerfausts.
- Melee: Standard bayonet charge.
Walkthrough: The French Line Holds
Phase 1: Initial German Push & Tank Threat
The mission begins with Deme and his squad defending a trench line. German infantry will immediately begin their advance from the north and west. Your primary threat, however, will be the first Panzer IV tank that rolls in from the northwest.
- Secure the Trenches: Immediately take cover in the main trench line. German infantry will pour in. Use your rifle to pick off advancing soldiers. Prioritize enemies with LMGs (MG 42s) or those attempting to flank.
- First Panzer IV: The tank will approach the main trench. You'll have 2-3 anti-tank grenades. Aim for the rear or side armor for maximum damage. If you run out, look for Panzerschreck or Panzerfaust pickups near fallen French or German heavy weapon specialists. There's often one near the central command post in the trench.
- Conserve Ammo: German infantry will be numerous. Aim for headshots to conserve rifle ammunition. Scavenge from fallen enemies frequently.
Phase 2: Holding the Central Sector & Flanking Maneuvers
After the first tank, the German assault intensifies. They will attempt to breach your lines from multiple angles, including flanking routes through the ruined buildings and wooded areas.
- Reinforce Weak Points: Pay attention to your squadmates' callouts. If a section of the trench is being overrun, move to support them. The central command post (often marked by a radio) is a key defensive point.
- Second Armor Threat: Expect a Sturmgeschütz III assault gun or another Panzer IV to appear, often from the eastern approach, attempting to push through the ruined village. use any remaining anti-tank grenades or newly acquired rocket launchers.
- Elite Infantry: German Sturmtruppen (stormtroopers) equipped with MP 40s or StG 44s will attempt to push aggressively. They are tougher than standard infantry. Focus fire on them.
- Environmental Awareness: Use the ruined buildings and scattered debris for cover. Be wary of enemies using smoke grenades to obscure their advance.
Phase 3: The Final, Overwhelming Assault
This is the "Last Stand" proper. The Germans will commit everything they have. Expect multiple tanks, waves of infantry, and potentially even flamethrower units.
- Multiple Armor Targets: You will face two or more tanks simultaneously (often a mix of Panzer IVs and Sturmgeschütz IIIs). This is where your anti-tank weapon management becomes critical. Prioritize tanks that are directly threatening your position or your squadmates.
- Scavenge Rocket Launchers: Ensure you have a steady supply of Panzerschrecks or Panzerfausts. There are usually several scattered around the battlefield, especially near destroyed vehicles or heavy weapon emplacements. Don't be afraid to make quick, risky dashes to pick them up.
- Flamethrower Units: If present, these are high-priority targets. Their close-range damage is devastating. Engage them from a distance before they can get close to your trenches.
- Hold the Line: The objective is simply to survive and repel the assault. Don't overextend. Stick with your squad and use coordinated fire. The mission concludes once the final wave is defeated and the German attack breaks.
Tactical Tips & Common Pitfalls:
- Anti-Tank Priority: Always prioritize enemy armor. Tanks can quickly wipe out your squad and breach your defenses.
- Cover is Life: The trenches and ruined buildings offer vital protection. Never stand in the open for long.
- Headshots Save Ammo: German infantry are numerous. Aim for the head to conserve precious rifle rounds.
- Scavenge Constantly: Check fallen enemies and weapon crates for ammunition, health packs, and especially anti-tank weapons.
- Don't Be a Hero: While aggressive play can be rewarding, in this mission, a more defensive, calculated approach is often better. Let the enemy come to you, then unleash hell.
- Watch Your Flanks: The Germans will try to bypass your main defenses. Keep an eye on the edges of the map and listen for enemy footsteps or callouts.
- Squad Support: Your squadmates can revive you. Try to stay close enough for them to reach you if you go down, but don't clump together, as this makes you vulnerable to grenades.
