Item Locations and Uses
Navigating the oppressive world of Beholder: Conductor requires more than just keen observation; it demands strategic use of the limited resources at your disposal. This section details crucial items, their locations, and how to best employ them to survive the Ministry's watchful eye and achieve your objectives.
Essential Tools for the Conductor
These items are your bread and butter for maintaining order, or subtly disrupting it, within the apartment block.
- Ministry-Issued Camera:
- Location: Automatically provided at the start of the game, found in your personal inventory.
- Use: Your primary tool for gathering evidence. Equip it and aim at residents performing illegal activities (e.g., listening to foreign radio, possessing contraband). A successful photo will generate an "Evidence" item in your inventory, which can then be submitted to the Ministry via the mailbox outside your apartment. Remember, timing is key; catch them in the act!
- Lockpick Set:
- Location:
- Initial Set: Can be purchased from the shady dealer, "The Fixer," who occasionally appears near the main entrance of the apartment building. His stock rotates, so check often.
- Replacements/Upgrades: Later in the game, more durable or advanced lockpicks might be found in specific tenant apartments (e.g., in the desk of the "Retired Engineer" in Apartment 2B after completing his initial quest line) or acquired through certain side quests involving the underground resistance.
- Use: Indispensable for gaining entry into locked apartments or containers without permission. Equip the Lockpick Set, approach a locked door or chest, and initiate the lockpicking mini-game. Failure can alert nearby residents or even result in a broken lockpick, requiring a new set. Practice makes perfect!
- Location:
- Ministry-Approved Bug:
- Location:
- Early Game: Often provided as a reward for completing early Ministry directives or can be purchased from the Ministry Supply Officer (accessible via your office terminal).
- Later Game: More advanced listening devices might be found in the "Black Market" vendor's inventory (appears randomly in the alleyway) or as rewards for specific informant missions.
- Use: Allows you to eavesdrop on conversations within a tenant's apartment. Equip the bug, enter the target apartment (preferably when the tenant is out or asleep), and interact with a suitable placement point (e.g., a wall, a lamp, a radio). Once placed, you can listen in from your own apartment or office, gathering crucial information for profiles or directives.
- Location:
Contraband and Quest Items
These items often have specific uses tied to quests or can be used for trade and influence.
- Foreign Radio:
- Location: Frequently found in the apartments of "Dissident" tenants (e.g., the "Student Activist" in Apartment 3A). Can also be planted by the Ministry as a trap.
- Use: A highly illegal item. If a tenant is caught with it, it's grounds for immediate eviction or arrest. You can confiscate it as evidence, or, if you're feeling rebellious, use it to listen to forbidden broadcasts yourself (at great risk!).
- "The People's Voice" Pamphlets:
- Location: Often found hidden in secret compartments within certain tenant apartments (e.g., behind a loose brick in the fireplace of the "Disgruntled Worker" in Apartment 1C).
- Use: These seditious materials are highly illegal. They can be used as evidence against a tenant, or, if you're pursuing a more subversive path, they can be distributed to other residents to sow discontent (be wary of being seen!).
- Medical Supplies (Bandages, Painkillers):
- Location: Can be purchased from the "Underground Doctor" (appears rarely in the basement), found in the medicine cabinets of some tenants (e.g., the "Elderly Invalid" in Apartment 2A), or occasionally dropped by Ministry patrols if you manage to incapacitate them.
- Use: Essential for maintaining your own health and well-being, especially if you engage in risky activities or suffer from stress. They can also be traded to certain tenants for information or favors, particularly those with ailing family members.
Strategic Consumables
These items offer temporary advantages or facilitate specific actions.
- Sleeping Pills:
- Location: Can be bought from the "Underground Doctor" or occasionally found in tenant medicine cabinets.
- Use: Can be discreetly slipped into a tenant's food or drink to render them unconscious for a period. This provides a window of opportunity to search their apartment thoroughly without fear of being caught. Be careful not to overdose them, or you'll have a corpse to explain!
- Forged Documents:
- Location: Acquired through specific side quests involving the resistance or purchased from "The Fixer" at a high price.
- Use: Can be used to create false identities for tenants you wish to protect, allowing them to escape the Ministry's grasp. Also useful for fabricating evidence or fulfilling certain Ministry directives that require a "fall guy."
