Bear Strategies & Avoidance

Bears in Blackfrost: The Long Dark II are formidable opponents, capable of ending your survival run in a single encounter if you're not prepared. Their immense strength and aggression make them a creature to be respected and, whenever possible, avoided. Bears are most active during warmer months and can be found in areas with abundant food sources, such as berry patches or near carcasses. The best strategy is to be aware of their habitat and avoid these areas if possible. If you spot a bear from a distance, do not approach. Slowly back away, keeping your eyes on the animal. Making loud noises or sudden movements can provoke an attack.

If a bear charges, your options are limited. Firearms are your most effective weapon, but it takes multiple well-placed shots to bring one down. Aim for the head or heart for maximum damage. If you are caught without a firearm, your only hope is to use a flare gun or a lit torch to try and scare it off. Some players have found success in climbing trees, though bears can sometimes reach higher than expected. Remember that bears are attracted to the scent of food, so store your meat and other perishables securely indoors. If you manage to kill a bear, it provides a significant amount of meat, fat, and hide, but the process of harvesting the carcass is dangerous and time-consuming, often attracting other scavengers or predators.
