Firestarting Skill Guide
The ability to reliably start and maintain a fire is arguably the most critical survival skill in Blackfrost: The Long Dark II. Fire provides warmth, allowing you to stave off hypothermia, cook food, boil water to make it safe to drink, and deter predators. Mastering firestarting involves understanding the necessary components, the different methods available, and how to manage your resources effectively.
To start a fire, you will need three primary components: Tinder, Kindling, and Fuel. Tinder is the easiest material to ite, such as newspaper, birch bark, or cotton balls. Kindling consists of small, dry twigs and branches that catch fire from the tinder. Fuel is larger wood that sustains the fire once it's established. You'll also need an ition source, which can be a match, a magnifying glass (if available and the sun is out), or a fire striker. Each ition source has a durability rating and a success chance, which can be influenced by your Firestarting skill level and the environmental conditions.
When starting a fire, always choose a safe location. Indoors, ensure you are in a well-ventilated area to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Outdoors, select a spot sheltered from the wind and away from flammable materials. The game will often prompt you to select your tinder, kindling, and fuel. The higher your Firestarting skill, the greater your chance of success. You can improve this skill by successfully starting fires. Different types of fuel burn at different rates and produce varying amounts of heat. Hardwoods generally burn longer and hotter than softwoods. Pay attention to the condition of your materials; damp tinder or fuel will significantly reduce your chances of success. If a fire fails to ite, don't despair. Assess why it failed – was the tinder damp? Was there not enough kindling? Adjust your approach and try again. Maintaining a fire is just as important as starting it. Add fuel periodically to keep it burning. The game will indicate when your fire is about to go out. Learning to manage your fire, from gathering the right materials to choosing the optimal ition source for the conditions, is fundamental to surviving the long, cold nights in Blackfrost.
