Rifle Hunting Techniques
While firearms offer more stopping power and a longer effective range, they come with the significant drawback of noise. In Blackfrost: The Long Dark II, the sound of a gunshot can attract unwanted attention from predators like wolves and bears, or scare away potential game. The primary rifle you'll likely encounter is the Hunting Rifle, which uses Rifle Cartridges as ammunition. These cartridges are scarce and should be used judiciously.
When using a rifle, the element of surprise is still important, but less so than with a bow. Your goal is to take down your target quickly and efficiently before the noise attracts danger. Aim for the head for an instant kill, or the chest for a high chance of a quick incapacitation. Always be aware of your surroundings after firing. Listen for the sounds of approaching threats. If you wound an animal with a rifle, it's more likely to flee a greater distance than if wounded by a bow, making tracking more challenging.
Consider the terrain. Open areas offer better visibility for long-range shots but also expose you more. Dense forests can provide cover but limit your line of sight. If hunting larger game like a moose, a well-placed rifle shot can be devastating. However, a wounded moose can be incredibly dangerous. Always have an escape route planned and be prepared to defend yourself if necessary. Conserve your rifle ammunition for critical situations or when you have a guaranteed clean shot at a valuable target.
