'The Catacombs' is a dark, claustrophobic level set in an ancient underground burial site. This level emphasizes close-quarters combat, navigating mazes, and dealing with numerous undead enemies.
- Catacomb Entrance: You'll start at the entrance to the catacombs. Clear the initial Zombies and Cultists. The Flashlight will be invaluable here.
- Maze-like Corridors: The catacombs are a maze of narrow passages, crypts, and burial chambers. It's easy to get lost, so use your map frequently.
- Undead Hordes: Expect numerous Zombies, Axe Zombies, and Hands. They often ambush you from behind sarcophagi or emerge from hidden passages.
- Finding the Keys: You'll need to find keys (e.g., Skull Key, Spider Key, Dagger Key) to unlock various sections of the catacombs. These are often hidden in crypts or behind false walls.
- Environmental Puzzles: You might need to activate a hidden switch to open a secret passage, or push a sarcophagus to reveal a path.
- Cultist Priests and Fanatics: These tougher enemies are often found guarding important areas or at the end of long corridors.
- Traps: Watch out for crushing traps, falling spikes, or collapsing floors.
- Exit: The exit is typically a hidden portal or a secret passage that opens once all objectives are met and you've navigated the catacombs' depths.
This level is a test of your close-quarters combat skills and navigation. The Sawed-Off Shotgun's secondary fire is excellent for clearing out groups of undead in tight spaces. The Voodoo Doll can also be very effective against groups of Cultists. Keep your Flashlight on and your ears open for enemy sounds.
