Bestiary & Enemy Weaknesses

Welcome, good hunter, to the comprehensive guide on Yharnam's most terrifying inhabitants. Understanding your foes is paramount to survival in this cursed city. This section details common enemies, their behaviors, and, crucially, their vulnerabilities. Exploit these weaknesses, and you might just live to see another dawn.

Understanding Enemy Types and Vulnerabilities

Enemies in Bloodborne often fall into broad categories, each with general weaknesses. However, individual creatures may have specific resistances or additional vulnerabilities. Always be prepared to adapt your strategy.

  • Beasts: Often susceptible to Fire and Serrated weapons. Examples include Lycanthropes, Scourge Beasts, and Cleric Beasts.
  • Kin: Typically weak to Bolt and Thrust attacks. These cosmic horrors, like Celestial Emissaries and Brainsuckers, are less common early on but become a significant threat.
  • Humans/Hunters: Vulnerable to Visceral Attacks and often take extra damage from Blunt or Skill-based weapons. This includes enemies like Church Hunters and Cainhurst Knights.
  • Eldritch/Great Ones: Highly varied, but many share weaknesses with Kin (Bolt, Thrust). Their resistances can be unpredictable, requiring careful observation.

Central Yharnam's Denizens

Your journey begins in Central Yharnam, a district teeming with infected townsfolk and grotesque beasts. Mastering these early encounters is crucial for building your confidence and resourcefulness.

Scourge Beast (Lycanthrope)

These hunched, wolf-like creatures are among the first threats you'll face. They are aggressive and can inflict significant damage if you're caught off guard.

  • Location: Abundant throughout Central Yharnam, particularly near the Central Yharnam Lamp and the Great Bridge.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Fire Damage: Extremely effective. Use Molotov Cocktails (found near the Central Yharnam lamp, or dropped by certain townsfolk) or apply Fire Paper to your weapon.
    • Serrated Weapons: Weapons like the Saw Cleaver and Saw Spear deal bonus damage in their untransformed state.
    • Visceral Attacks: A well-timed shot with your Pistol or Blunderbuss during their attack wind-up will stagger them, allowing for a devastating Visceral Attack.
  • Strategy:

Approach cautiously. If facing a single Scourge Beast, bait its lunging attack, dodge to the side, and counter with 2-3 quick attacks. For groups, prioritize isolating them. Molotov Cocktails are excellent for crowd control or quickly dispatching a single, troublesome beast. Remember to use your pebbles to draw individual enemies away from packs.

Huntsman (Villager)

The common townsfolk, driven mad by the plague, are your most frequent adversaries. They come in various forms, from torch-wielders to riflemen.

  • Location: Ubiquitous across Central Yharnam, Old Yharnam, and Cathedral Ward.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Visceral Attacks: Most human-sized enemies are susceptible to parrying with your firearm, followed by a Visceral Attack. This is a core combat mechanic to master.
    • Blunt Damage: Weapons like the Kirkhammer (transformed) or Hunter's Axe (transformed) can be effective.
  • Strategy:

Learn their attack patterns. Torch-wielders are slow but can inflict burn. Pitchfork and axe-wielders have wider swings. Riflemen are dangerous at range; prioritize closing the distance or using cover. Practice parrying their attacks; the timing is generous on most basic Huntsmen. For groups, use the environment to your advantage, drawing them into chokepoints or separating them with careful movement.

Church Giant

These massive, robed figures are slow but incredibly powerful, often wielding large axes or brick hammers. They are formidable early-game challenges.

  • Location: First encountered in Central Yharnam near the shortcut gate to the Great Bridge, and later in Cathedral Ward.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Headshots: Shooting their head repeatedly will eventually stagger them, allowing for a Visceral Attack. This is the most reliable method.
    • Bolt Damage: Less common early on, but Bolt Paper can be effective if you have it.
    • Backstabs/Charged R2: While risky, a charged R2 attack to their back can also set up a Visceral Attack.
  • Strategy:

Maintain distance and focus on headshots. A good strategy is to circle them, baiting their slow attacks, then fire your pistol at their head. Repeat until staggered. Alternatively, if you're confident, get behind them and unleash a charged R2. Be wary of their wide swings and ground slams, which have a surprising area of effect. The Church Giant near the Central Yharnam shortcut can be cheesed by luring it to the stairs and attacking from above.

Beyond Central Yharnam: Expanding Your Hunter's Knowledge

As you venture into areas like Old Yharnam and Cathedral Ward, you'll encounter new threats requiring different approaches.

Beast Patient

These emaciated, rapidly moving beasts are often found in Old Yharnam. They are quick and can overwhelm you with numbers.

  • Location: Primarily Old Yharnam.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Fire Damage: Similar to Scourge Beasts, they are highly vulnerable to fire.
    • Serrated Weapons: Again, the bonus damage from serrated weapons is very effective.
    • Crowd Control: AoE attacks or Molotov Cocktails are excellent for dealing with groups.
  • Strategy:

These enemies are fast and aggressive. Avoid getting surrounded. Use your environment to create bottlenecks. The Hunter's Axe (transformed R2) or Ludwig's Holy Blade (transformed R2) are great for sweeping multiple enemies. Don't hesitate to use Molotov Cocktails to thin their ranks, especially when they charge in packs.

Brainsucker

These grotesque Kin enemies are a nightmare for any hunter, capable of draining your Insight and inflicting Frenzy.

  • Location: First encountered in Cathedral Ward, often guarding valuable items or pathways.
  • Weaknesses:
    • Bolt Damage: Extremely effective. Use Bolt Paper or a Tonitrus if you have one.
    • Thrust Attacks: Weapons with strong thrust attacks (e.g., Reiterpallasch, transformed Ludwig's Holy Blade R2) deal bonus damage.
  • Strategy:

Brainsuckers are notorious for their grab attack, which drains Insight. This grab can be parried! A well-timed shot will stun them, allowing for a Visceral Attack. If you get grabbed, mash R1 to escape faster. Prioritize them in any encounter. If you lack Bolt Paper, focus on quick, aggressive thrust attacks to prevent them from initiating their grab. Carry Sedatives to cure Frenzy if you're hit by their aura attack.

This is merely a taste of the horrors that await. Always observe new enemies, learn their tells, and adapt your tactics. Good hunting, and may the good blood guide your way!
