Rom, the Vacuous Spider
Rom, the Vacuous Spider, is a Great One encountered in the eerie confines of Byrgenwerth. This seemingly docile, yet immensely powerful, entity serves as a critical gatekeeper, and her defeat marks a significant turning point in the Bloodborne narrative, ushering in the Blood Moon phase and opening new, terrifying areas of Yharnam.
Location
Rom is found at the bottom of the lake in Byrgenwerth. After defeating the Blood-starved Beast and gaining access to the Healing Church Workshop, you can proceed to the Forbidden Woods, then Byrgenwerth. Rom’s arena is accessed by dropping into the lake from the Byrgenwerth balcony after defeating the College's caretaker, Master Willem.
Weaknesses & Resistances
Understanding Rom's vulnerabilities is key to a swift victory. While she appears sluggish, her defenses are formidable.
- Primary Weakness: Bolt Damage. Weapons imbued with Bolt Paper or those naturally dealing Bolt damage (e.g., Tonitrus) are highly effective against Rom.
- Secondary Weakness: Thrust Attacks. Many weapons have a thrust attack (often R2 or a transformed attack). These attacks deal bonus damage to Rom, especially when aimed at her body.
- Minor Weakness: Fire Damage. While not as potent as Bolt, Fire Paper or fire-infused weapons can provide a small damage boost.
- Resistance: Arcane Damage. Rom is highly resistant to Arcane damage from weapons. While certain Hunter Tools that deal flat Arcane damage (like A Call Beyond or Augur of Ebrietas) can be used for utility or minor damage, relying on Arcane-scaling weapons will significantly prolong the fight.
- Resistance: Blunt Damage. Avoid blunt attacks if possible, as Rom takes reduced damage from them.
Recommended Loadout
- Weapons:
- Primary: A fast weapon with good thrust attacks (e.g., Ludwig's Holy Blade transformed R2, Threaded Cane whip form R2, Kirkhammer transformed R2).
- Secondary: Tonitrus (if upgraded) for its innate Bolt damage.
- Consumables:
- Bolt Paper: Essential for boosting your weapon's damage. Bring at least 5-7.
- Blood Vials: Standard healing.
- Quicksilver Bullets: For Hunter Tools or parrying the small spiders (though parrying is risky).
- Hunter Tools:
- Empty Phantasm Shell: An alternative to Bolt Paper if you lack it, providing Arcane damage to your weapon (less effective than Bolt Paper against Rom, but better than nothing).
- Beast Roar: Can be used to knock down the smaller spiders, giving you breathing room.
- Runes:
- Clawmark: For increased visceral attack damage on the small spiders.
- Communion/Oedon Writhe: For increased Blood Vial/Quicksilver Bullet capacity.
Strategy
The fight against Rom is divided into three distinct phases, each escalating in difficulty and Rom's aggression.
Phase 1: The Passive Great One
Rom begins completely passive, surrounded by her numerous "Rom's Children" (small spiders). She will not attack until you engage her or her minions.
- Clear the Minions: This is crucial. Do NOT rush Rom directly. The small spiders hit hard and can quickly overwhelm you.
- Targeting: The small spiders' heads are armored and deflect attacks. Aim for their sides or, ideally, their soft underbellies/rears.
- Attack Pattern: They typically lunge forward or perform a sweeping attack. Dodge into or around them to get to their vulnerable spots.
- Visceral Attacks: If you can parry their lunge, a visceral attack is possible and highly damaging.
- Engage Rom: Once the first wave of spiders is clear, apply Bolt Paper to your weapon and unleash charged thrust attacks on Rom's body. Avoid her head, as it's armored.
- Teleportation: After taking significant damage, Rom will glow blue and teleport away. This signals the start of Phase 2.
Phase 2: Arcane Barrage & Reinforcements
Rom will teleport to a new location, summon more spiders, and begin actively using Arcane attacks.
- Prioritize Spiders (Again): Just like Phase 1, clear the immediate threat of the small spiders. They are more aggressive now.
- Dodge Arcane Attacks: Rom has two primary Arcane attacks:
- Arcane Meteor Shower: Rom will rear up and summon a barrage of meteors from the sky. The tell is her body glowing blue and looking upwards. To avoid this, continuously sprint in one direction (either towards her or away) until the meteors stop. Do not try to dodge roll, as you'll likely get hit.
- Arcane Explosion (Close Range): If you are close to Rom, she may charge up a localized Arcane explosion. The tell is her body glowing intensely blue and her head dipping slightly. When you see this, immediately sprint away from her or get behind her if possible.
- Attack Rom: After dodging her attacks and clearing some spiders, apply Bolt Paper and continue with charged thrust attacks. Be patient and wait for openings.
Phase 3: Increased Aggression & More Spiders
Rom will teleport again, summoning even more spiders, and her Arcane attacks will become more frequent and potentially more varied (she might use the close-range explosion more often).
- Maintain Discipline: The core strategy remains the same: clear spiders, dodge Arcane attacks, then punish Rom. Do not get greedy.
- Environmental Awareness: The arena is large. Use the space to your advantage for dodging meteors.
- Focus Fire: Concentrate all your damage on Rom once the spiders are manageable. The goal is to end the fight quickly once you have an opening.
Common Pitfalls & Tips
- Getting Swarmed: The most common cause of death. Always prioritize clearing the small spiders, especially in Phases 2 and 3.
- Ignoring Arcane Attacks: Rom's Arcane attacks are devastating. Learn their tells and how to avoid them.
- Head vs. Body: Remember Rom's head is armored. Aim for her body for maximum damage.
- Patience: This is a fight of attrition. Don't rush. Wait for safe openings to attack Rom.
- Stamina Management: Conserve stamina for dodging and attacking. Don't over-commit.
- Camera Issues: The camera can be problematic with so many enemies. Try to keep Rom in view while managing the spiders.
Rewards
Defeating Rom, the Vacuous Spider, yields significant rewards and progresses the main storyline.
- Kin Coldblood (12): A valuable item used to gain Blood Echoes.
- 2 Insight: Gained upon defeating a boss.
- Lunarium Key: This key is essential for accessing the upper levels of Byrgenwerth, specifically the door leading to the Moonside Lake. If you already acquired it through other means (e.g., from a specific NPC interaction), it will not drop again.
- Progression Trigger: Defeating Rom triggers the "Blood Moon" phase of Yharnam. This dramatically alters the world, making previously safe areas more dangerous and unlocking access to Yahar'gul, Unseen Village.
