Basic Attacks & Combos
Mastering the fundamental attack mechanics is the bedrock of success in Bloodborne. Every weapon, from the simplest cleaver to the most elaborate trick weapon, relies on a core set of attacks that can be chained together to form devastating combos. Understanding these basics will allow you to exploit enemy openings and control the flow of combat.
Bloodborne's combat is fast-paced and aggressive, rewarding players who can fluidly string together attacks while managing their stamina. Each weapon has a distinct moveset, but the core actions remain consistent.
Basic Attack Types:
- R1 (Light Attack): This is your primary attack. It's generally faster and consumes less stamina than a heavy attack. Most weapons have a series of R1 attacks that can be chained together.
- R2 (Heavy Attack): This attack is slower but deals more damage and often has greater range or stagger potential. Some R2 attacks can be charged for even greater effect.
Weapon Transformations:
A key feature of Bloodborne's combat is the ability to transform your trick weapons on the fly. This adds a dynamic layer to your attacks, allowing you to adapt to different situations.
- L1 (Transform Attack): Pressing L1 will initiate a transformation attack. This attack often has unique properties and can be used to extend combos or catch enemies off guard.
- Strategic Transformation: Learn when to transform. For example, transforming the Saw Cleaver from its short form to its long form mid-combo can extend your reach and damage output.
Stamina Management:
Every attack, dodge, and sprint consumes stamina. Your stamina bar regenerates when you are not performing these actions. It is crucial to manage your stamina effectively:
- Don't Over-commit: Avoid depleting your stamina bar entirely, as this leaves you vulnerable to enemy attacks. Always leave enough for at least one dodge.
- Observe Enemy Openings: Attack during enemy recovery animations when they are most vulnerable.
Basic Combo Examples:
While specific combos vary by weapon, here are some fundamental principles:
- R1 Chain: Repeatedly pressing R1 will execute a series of light attacks. The number of R1s you can perform before needing to recover stamina depends on your Endurance stat and the weapon.
- R1 -> R2: A common and effective combo is to land a few R1 attacks and then follow up with a more powerful R2 attack.
- R1 -> L1 (Transform Attack): Initiate a combo with R1 attacks, then use L1 to transform your weapon, often catching enemies with a surprise attack or extending the combo's reach.
- Charged R2: For some weapons, holding down R2 will charge the attack, resulting in a more powerful strike. This is best used when an enemy is recovering from a long attack animation or is staggered.
Experiment with your chosen weapon's moveset in the Hunter's Dream or against weaker enemies. Understanding the rhythm and timing of your attacks will be key to surviving the brutal encounters that await you.
