Messengers & Shops

The Hunter's Dream serves as your central hub in Bloodborne, and within it, you'll find the invaluable Messengers and various shops that are crucial for your survival and progression. Understanding how to utilize these resources effectively will greatly enhance your hunting prowess.

The Messengers

These small, pale creatures are your primary means of interaction within the Hunter's Dream. They emerge from the ground, often near the Doll or the various tombstones, and offer different services depending on their location and appearance.

  • Bath Messengers: Located near the main building in the Hunter's Dream, these Messengers operate as your primary shop. They are distinguishable by their slightly larger size and the glowing aura around them.
  • Insight Messengers: Once you acquire at least one point of Insight (typically after encountering your first boss or consuming a Madman's Knowledge), a separate group of Messengers will appear near the Bath Messengers. These Messengers offer unique items that can only be purchased with Insight, rather than Blood Echoes.
  • Stump Messengers: Found near the various tombstones that act as warp points to different areas, these Messengers allow you to manage your storage and retrieve items you've sent back to the Hunter's Dream.

The Shops (Bath Messengers)

The Bath Messengers offer a comprehensive selection of goods vital for your journey through Yharnam. Their inventory expands as you progress through the game and acquire certain Key Items known as "Badges."

Purchasing Essentials

Always ensure you have a stock of these fundamental items:

  • Blood Vials: Your primary healing item. Early in the game, you'll want to purchase these frequently. They cost 600 Blood Echoes each.
  • Quicksilver Bullets: Used for your firearm and certain Hunter Tools. Each bullet costs 200 Blood Echoes.
  • Molotov Cocktails: Excellent for dealing fire damage and staggering certain enemies. They cost 180 Blood Echoes each.
  • Pebbles: Useful for luring individual enemies away from groups. They are very cheap at 10 Blood Echoes each.
Expanding Inventory with Badges

As you discover specific Key Items, the Bath Messengers' inventory will grow significantly. Here's a breakdown of key Badges and what they unlock:

  • Saw Hunter Badge: Obtained by defeating the Cleric Beast on the Great Bridge in Central Yharnam.
    • Unlocks: Saw Cleaver, Hunter Axe, Threaded Cane (if not chosen as starting weapon), Hunter Pistol, Hunter Blunderbuss (if not chosen as starting weapon).
  • Sword Hunter Badge: Found in the sewers of Central Yharnam, near the giant pig.
    • Unlocks: Kirkhammer, Repeating Pistol.
  • Powder Keg Hunter Badge: Acquired after defeating the Darkbeast Paarl in Old Yharnam.
    • Unlocks: Boom Hammer, Stake Driver, Rifle Spear, Cannon.
  • Cosmic Eye Watcher Badge: Found in the Upper Cathedral Ward, after defeating the Celestial Emissary.
    • Unlocks: Augur of Ebrietas, A Call Beyond (Hunter Tools).
  • Old Hunter Badge: Dropped by Father Gascoigne upon his defeat in Central Yharnam.
    • Unlocks: Hunter's Garb, Hunter's Gloves, Hunter's Trousers.

There are many more badges to discover, each unlocking new weapons, attire, and consumables. Always check the Bath Messengers after acquiring a new Key Item to see what new offerings they have.

The Insight Shop (Insight Messengers)

These Messengers appear once you have at least one Insight. They offer unique and powerful items that can only be purchased with Insight, a valuable resource that also affects enemy behavior and the world's perception.

  • Madman's Knowledge: Consuming this item grants you 1 Insight. Useful for reaching Insight thresholds for certain events or purchases. Costs 1 Insight.
  • Small Resonant Bell: Allows you to offer cooperation to other players in their world. Costs 1 Insight.
  • Sinister Resonant Bell: Allows you to invade other players' worlds. Costs 1 Insight.
  • Bold Hunter's Mark: Teleports you back to the last lamp you visited without losing Blood Echoes. Costs 1 Insight.
  • Hunter Attire: Certain unique attire sets, such as the Gascoigne's Set, become available for purchase with Insight after defeating their respective owners.

Prioritize purchasing the Small Resonant Bell early if you plan on co-op, and keep a few Bold Hunter's Marks on hand for emergencies or quick exits from dangerous areas.
