Iosefka's Clinic & First Steps

You awaken in a dimly lit room within Iosefka's Clinic, a place that will soon become synonymous with both mystery and dread. Your journey into the nightmare of Yharnam begins here, disoriented and vulnerable. After a brief, unsettling cinematic, you'll be confronted by your first taste of the city's horrors: a grotesque Scourge Beast. This encounter is designed to be unwinnable; you are meant to perish here. Embrace it, as death is merely a temporary setback in Bloodborne, a chance to learn and adapt.

Upon your inevitable demise, you'll be transported to the ethereal Hunter's Dream, a sanctuary outside the waking world. Here, you'll meet the enigmatic Doll and the ancient, wheelchair-bound Gehrman, the First Hunter. This is where your true journey begins, as you are prompted to select your initial armaments:

Choosing Your Starting Weapons

Your choice of starting weapons will significantly influence your early game experience. Consider your preferred playstyle:

  • Trick Weapons (Melee):
    • Saw Cleaver: A versatile and powerful weapon, excellent for beginners. Its saw form delivers rapid, high-damage attacks, while its cleaver form offers extended reach. It excels against beasts.
    • Hunter Axe: Slower but boasts impressive reach and crowd control capabilities, especially in its transformed two-handed mode. Its charged R2 attack can knock down many enemies.
    • Threaded Cane: A more skill-based weapon, offering quick, precise thrusts in cane form and wide, sweeping attacks in whip form. Ideal for players who prefer finesse and managing multiple enemies.
  • Firearms (Off-hand):
    • Hunter Pistol: A reliable and quick firearm, perfect for interrupting enemy attacks and setting up visceral attacks (parries).
    • Hunter Blunderbuss: A shotgun-like weapon with a wider spread, making it easier to parry enemies at close range, though with a slower firing rate.

Recommendation for New Players: The Saw Cleaver and Hunter Pistol are widely recommended for their balanced utility and ease of use. The Saw Cleaver's serrated bonus against beasts is invaluable in the early game.

The Hunter's Dream: Your Sanctuary and Hub

The Hunter's Dream is more than just a warp point; it's your central hub for progression and preparation. Familiarize yourself with its key functions:

  • The Doll: Once you acquire at least one Insight (often from encountering a boss or consuming a Madman's Knowledge), the Doll will awaken. She allows you to spend your Blood Echoes (the game's currency and experience points) to level up your character's stats.
  • Workshop: Located near Gehrman, this workbench allows you to repair your weapons, fortify them with Blood Stone Shards, and equip Blood Gems (later in the game) to enhance their properties.
  • Storage Chest: Found next to the workshop, this chest allows you to store excess items.
  • Messengers: These small, spectral beings offer various services:
    • Bath Messengers: Located at the base of the stairs, they sell consumables, weapons, armor, and upgrade materials in exchange for Blood Echoes.
    • Insight Messengers: Found near the Doll, they sell unique items and armor sets in exchange for Insight.
  • Tombstones: These act as warp points to various Lanterns you've activated in Yharnam and beyond.

First Steps into Yharnam: Central Yharnam

Once armed, return to the Clinic via the Tombstone. You'll find yourself back in the operating room. This time, the path forward is clear.

  1. Exit the Clinic: Head through the door you were initially dragged through. You'll emerge into a dark corridor.
  2. Initial Combat Practice: You'll encounter your first living enemies here – a few Huntsmen. This is your chance to practice the core combat mechanics:
    • R1 (Quick Attack): Your primary attack. Fast and efficient.
    • R2 (Charged Attack): Slower but more powerful. Can often stagger enemies.
    • L1 (Transform Attack): Switches your Trick Weapon's form, often chaining into a powerful attack.
    • Circle (Dodge/Quickstep): Essential for avoiding damage. Use it to circle strafe enemies or dodge through their attacks.
    • L2 (Firearm Attack): Fires your off-hand weapon. Crucial for parrying.
    • Parrying & Visceral Attacks: Shoot an enemy with your firearm just as their attack is about to land. A successful parry will stagger them, allowing you to perform a devastating Visceral Attack with R1 when standing directly in front of them. Practice this on the weaker enemies!
    • Blood Echoes: Every enemy you defeat will drop Blood Echoes. Always pick them up! These are vital for leveling up and purchasing items. If you die, you'll drop all your accumulated Blood Echoes at the point of death. You have one chance to retrieve them; die again before reaching them, and they are lost forever.
  3. Collect Items:
    • To your immediate left, you'll find a body with 4x Blood Vial.
    • Further down the corridor, another body holds 4x Quicksilver Bullets.
  4. Open the Gate: Proceed through the large gate at the end of the corridor. You're now officially in Central Yharnam.
  5. First Lantern: Immediately to your left after exiting the gate, you'll see a small path leading to a glowing lamp. This is your first Lantern. Activate it to establish a warp point back to the Hunter's Dream. This is crucial for saving progress and leveling up.

From here, the sprawling, interconnected streets of Central Yharnam await. Be wary, for danger lurks around every corner, and the night is long.
