Navigating the Nightmare of Mensis
Welcome, Hunter, to the Nightmare of Mensis – a realm of cosmic horror, maddening architecture, and relentless adversaries. Having bested The One Reborn, you are now thrust into this oppressive landscape, a final, twisted proving ground before facing the ultimate truth of the nightmare. This guide will meticulously lead you through its treacherous paths, helping you overcome its unique challenges and claim its valuable rewards.
Initial Ascent and the Brain Trust's Gaze
Upon your arrival, you'll find yourself at the Nightmare of Mensis: Base lamp. Ahead lies a long, winding path fraught with danger. Your immediate objective is to reach the castle proper, but the journey itself is a gauntlet:
- The Brain Trust's Gaze: Almost immediately, you'll be subjected to the terrifying gaze of a giant Brain Trust perched high on the castle. This entity constantly inflicts Frenzy upon you. To mitigate this, sprint through the initial section, utilizing the large rocks and structures as cover. Equip armor with high Frenzy resistance (e.g., Beak Mask, Graveguard Set) and keep Sedatives on your quick-slot.
- Maneater Boars: The first enemies you encounter are the formidable Maneater Boars. These beasts are aggressive and hit hard. They can be parried for visceral attacks, or you can utilize their slow turning speed to get behind them for charged R2 attacks.
- Nightmare Apostles: As you progress, you'll also face Nightmare Apostles (the spider-like creatures). They are relatively frail but can spit webbing that slows you down, making you vulnerable to the Brain Trust's Frenzy. Prioritize them with quick attacks.
Continue along the path, hugging the left wall for cover from the Brain Trust. You'll eventually reach a cave entrance. Inside, you'll find a safe haven from the Frenzy-inducing gaze. Proceed through the cave, defeating any Nightmare Apostles or Maneater Boars in your way. You'll emerge onto a ledge overlooking a chasm. Follow this ledge to reach the first interior section of the castle.
Inside the Castle: Mergo's Loft: Base
Once inside, you'll find the Mergo's Loft: Base lamp. Light it immediately – this is a crucial checkpoint. From here, your goal is to ascend the castle, dealing with its unique inhabitants:
- Mergo's Attendants: These cloaked figures wield various weapons (scythes, spears, crossbows) and can be surprisingly agile. They often attack in groups. Prioritize the crossbow-wielding variants to prevent ranged interruptions.
- Maneater Boars (again): You'll encounter more Maneater Boars within the castle corridors. Use the environment to your advantage, luring them into narrower spaces or using doorways to funnel them.
- Shadows of Yharnam (Nightmare Variants): Crucially, these are NOT the boss from the Forbidden Woods. These are distinct, regular enemies that resemble the Shadows of Yharnam. They are dangerous, wielding flaming swords and casting fireballs. They are susceptible to parries and visceral attacks. Focus on isolating them one-on-one if possible, as their combined attacks can quickly overwhelm you.
From the Mergo's Loft: Base lamp, head up the stairs. You'll encounter several Mergo's Attendants and a few Nightmare Variants of the Shadows of Yharnam. Navigate through the winding corridors and up more stairs. Keep an eye out for side passages that might contain useful items or lead to dead ends with enemies. Your path will generally lead upwards.
The Shortcut and the Middle Loft
As you ascend, you'll eventually reach a large, open room with several Mergo's Attendants and a few Shadows of Yharnam (Nightmare Variants). This room can be challenging due to the enemy density. Consider using Augur of Ebrietas or similar tools to knock enemies off ledges if available. After clearing this area or carefully navigating it, you'll find a cage elevator. Take it down.
- The Cage Elevator: This elevator leads to a shortcut back to the Mergo's Loft: Base lamp, but more importantly, it's part of the path to the next area.
- Mergo's Loft: Middle: The elevator will eventually deposit you at the Mergo's Loft: Middle lamp. Light this lamp immediately. This is your staging ground for the next phase of the nightmare.
Dealing with the Brain Trust and Winter Lanterns
From Mergo's Loft: Middle, you'll notice a large bridge extending outwards. This bridge is heavily guarded by Mergo's Attendants and, more ominously, is within the direct line of sight of the giant Brain Trust, which will continue to inflict Frenzy. This section requires careful planning:
- Frenzy Management: Equip your highest Frenzy resistance gear. Keep Sedatives readily available. Consider using the "Deep Sea" rune for additional Frenzy resistance.
- Winter Lanterns: Beyond the bridge, you'll encounter the terrifying Winter Lanterns. These enemies inflict rapid Frenzy buildup simply by looking at you, and their grab attack is often a one-shot kill.
To safely navigate this area and disable the Brain Trust, follow these steps:
- From Mergo's Loft: Middle, head out onto the bridge. Sprint past the Mergo's Attendants, using the pillars for cover from the Brain Trust's gaze.
- On the other side of the bridge, you'll see a path leading to the left and a path leading straight ahead. Take the path to the left.
- This path will lead you to a series of ledges and platforms. You'll encounter your first Winter Lantern here. The safest strategy is often to sprint past it, or if you must fight, engage it aggressively, using quick attacks and dodging its grab. A well-timed parry can also work, but the Frenzy buildup makes it risky.
- Continue along this winding path, dealing with or avoiding subsequent Winter Lanterns. You'll eventually reach a cage elevator that descends.
- This elevator will take you to the base of the tower where the Brain Trust resides. You'll find a lever here. Pulling this lever will cause the Brain Trust to fall, permanently disabling its Frenzy-inducing gaze for the rest of the area.
- After pulling the lever, take the elevator back up. You can now explore the previously Frenzy-ridden areas with much greater ease.
Optional Exploration and Items
With the Brain Trust disabled, you can now safely explore the areas you previously rushed through. This includes the main bridge and the areas around the Winter Lanterns. Be thorough, as there are valuable items to be found:
- Blood Stone Chunks: Scattered throughout the castle, especially in areas previously under the Brain Trust's gaze.
- Madman's Knowledge / Great One's Wisdom: Often found near the bodies of fallen hunters or in secluded corners.
- One Third of Umbilical Cord: (Location specific, usually after a boss or in a hidden area).
Return to the Mergo's Loft: Middle lamp. From here, you can now safely proceed towards the final boss of this area.
Path to Mergo's Wet Nurse
From Mergo's Loft: Middle, head back out onto the main bridge. With the Brain Trust gone, you can now deal with the Mergo's Attendants at your leisure. Cross the bridge and continue straight ahead (the path you ignored earlier). This will lead you to a large, circular arena. Prepare yourself, Hunter, for the final confrontation of the Nightmare of Mensis.
Boss: Mergo's Wet Nurse
Mergo's Wet Nurse is a multi-limbed, spectral entity that serves as the final guardian of the nightmare. She is a formidable foe, but with the right strategy, she can be overcome.
- Weaknesses: The Wet Nurse is generally resistant to most elemental damage. She is not particularly weak to any specific damage type, but physical damage is always reliable. She is susceptible to parries on some of her attacks, but it's risky.
- Recommended Loadout:
- Weapon: Your highest damage physical weapon (e.g., Ludwig's Holy Blade, Kirkhammer, Saw Cleaver/Spear). Consider applying Bolt Paper or Fire Paper for a slight damage boost if you have an abundance.
- Runes: Equip runes that boost physical attack (Clawmark, Fierce Attack) or provide additional health (Lake, Odeon Writhe for quicksilver bullets).
- Consumables: Blood Vials (plenty!), Sedatives (for her mist phase), Bolt Paper/Fire Paper.
- Strategy:
- Phase 1: The Wet Nurse primarily uses sweeping attacks with her many blades. Dodge *into* her attacks to get behind her. Her back is her most vulnerable spot. Focus on charged R2 attacks and visceral attacks if you can land a parry.
- Mist Phase: At roughly 50% health, the Wet Nurse will summon a dark mist, creating clones of herself. During this phase, she will continuously attack from the mist, making it difficult to track the real one. Your Frenzy resistance will be tested here. The best strategy is to run in a wide circle around the arena, avoiding attacks until the mist dissipates. Use Sedatives if your Frenzy meter gets too high. Alternatively, if you're feeling brave, you can try to locate the real Wet Nurse by looking for the one that takes damage.
- Post-Mist: Once the mist clears, she will return to her Phase 1 attack patterns. Continue to exploit her back.
- Common Pitfalls:
- Getting greedy with attacks and being caught by her wide sweeps.
- Panicking during the mist phase and getting overwhelmed by the clones or Frenzy.
- Underestimating her reach and speed.
Upon defeating Mergo's Wet Nurse, you will receive the One Third of Umbilical Cord (if you haven't collected three already) and the Mergo's Wet Nurse Trophy. A new lamp will appear, allowing you to return to the Hunter's Dream and prepare for the final confrontation with the source of the nightmare.
