Game Endings (Comprehensive)
Bloodborne features three distinct endings, each profoundly altering the fate of your Hunter and Yharnam. Achieving a specific ending often hinges on critical choices made in the late game, particularly concerning the consumption of One Third of Umbilical Cord items. This guide will walk you through the precise steps to unlock each conclusion.
I. Yharnam Sunrise (Submission)
This is the most straightforward ending, requiring no special actions beyond progressing through the main story. It represents the Hunter's acceptance of their role and the dream's conclusion.
- Trigger Condition: Do NOT consume any One Third of Umbilical Cord items.
- Final Boss Encounter: After defeating the Mergo's Wet Nurse in Nightmare of Mensis, return to the Hunter's Dream. The Gehrman, the First Hunter, will be waiting near the base of the great tree.
- Action: Speak to Gehrman. When prompted, choose the option to "Submit your life."
- Outcome: Gehrman will execute you, freeing you from the Hunter's Dream. The game concludes with the Hunter awakening to a Yharnam sunrise, seemingly free from the nightmare, though the true implications are left ambiguous.
II. Honoring Wishes (Refusal)
This ending requires you to defy Gehrman's offer, leading to a climactic battle and a different resolution to the Hunter's plight.
- Trigger Condition: Do NOT consume any One Third of Umbilical Cord items.
- Final Boss Encounter: After defeating Mergo's Wet Nurse, return to the Hunter's Dream. Gehrman will be waiting.
- Action: Speak to Gehrman. When prompted, choose the option to "Refuse Gehrman's offer."
- Boss Fight: This choice immediately initiates a boss battle against Gehrman, the First Hunter. He is a formidable opponent, wielding the Scythe of the Burial Blade and capable of swift, powerful attacks. Be prepared for a challenging fight.
- Outcome: Upon defeating Gehrman, the Moon Presence will descend. You will then be embraced by the Moon Presence, becoming its new surrogate or "host" for the Hunter's Dream. The game ends with the Hunter taking Gehrman's place in the wheelchair, overseeing the dream.
III. Childhood's Beginning (True Ending)
Considered the "true" or "secret" ending, this path requires a specific ritual involving the One Third of Umbilical Cord items, leading to a profound transformation for the Hunter.
- Trigger Condition: You must consume at least three (3) One Third of Umbilical Cord items before initiating the final encounter with Gehrman. It is crucial to consume them before the choice to submit or refuse appears.
- Umbilical Cord Locations: There are four available in a single playthrough, but only three are needed.
- Abandoned Old Workshop: Found on an altar within the workshop, accessible after defeating the Darkbeast Paarl or via the Upper Cathedral Ward shortcut.
- Iosefka's Clinic: Obtained by defeating the Imposter Iosefka after she has become pregnant. This requires entering the clinic from the back entrance (via the Forbidden Woods) and not killing her earlier in the game.
- Mergo's Wet Nurse: Automatically drops upon defeating the boss Mergo's Wet Nurse in the Nightmare of Mensis.
- Arianna, of the Church: If you send Arianna to Oedon Chapel and she survives until the late game, she will give birth to a Celestial Larva in the sewers beneath the chapel. Defeating this creature will yield the final cord.
- Final Boss Encounter: After defeating Mergo's Wet Nurse and consuming at least three cords, return to the Hunter's Dream. Gehrman will be waiting.
- Action: Speak to Gehrman. When prompted, choose to "Refuse Gehrman's offer."
- Boss Fights:
- First, you will fight Gehrman, the First Hunter.
- Upon defeating Gehrman, the Moon Presence will descend as usual. However, due to your consumption of the cords, you will resist its embrace and immediately initiate a second boss battle against the Moon Presence itself.
- Outcome: By defeating the Moon Presence, the Hunter transcends their humanity, becoming an infant Great One. This ending symbolizes a new cycle, with the Hunter potentially becoming a benevolent or malevolent entity in Yharnam's future.
Choose your path wisely, good Hunter, for the fate of Yharnam and your own soul rests on your decisions.
