Traversing the Nightmare of Mensis

The Nightmare of Mensis represents the final test of a Hunter’s resolve, characterized by environmental hazards and high-tier threats. Upon entering, players are immediately targeted by the Brain of Mensis, which inflicts rapid Frenzy buildup as long as you are in its line of sight. Seek cover behind rock formations and progress quickly toward the castle to mitigate this lethal status effect.

Key Level Hazards & Enemies

  • Winter Lanterns: Located on the bridge past the Mergo’s Loft: Middle lamp. These creatures cause massive Frenzy damage by looking at you. It is highly recommended to equip the Deep Sea Rune and high-frenzy resist gear (like the Ashen Hunter set) or use Sedatives to survive engagements.
  • Silverbeasts: These torch-bearing enemies infest the initial slopes. When slain, they often spawn parasitic maggots; use fire damage to prevent the parasites from emerging.
  • Giant Spiders: A large hall early in the area contains a massive spider and several smaller ones. Bottle-neck them at the doorway to avoid being swarmed.

Notable Items & Upgrades

  • Blood Rock: The only +10 weapon upgrade material in the base game. It is found in the dark pit below the castle after pulling the lever to drop the Brain of Mensis.
  • Moon Rune (Tier 3): Found by performing the "Make Contact" gesture for approximately 30 seconds in front of the dropped Brain of Mensis.

Major Boss Encounters

The region is split by two distinct boss fights that require different tactical approaches:

  • Micolash, Host of the Nightmare: A chase sequence through a foggy labyrinth. In his final phase, he utilizes A Call Beyond, a devastating arcane projectile volley. Stay close to him to prevent him from casting this spell, or use the Loch Shield to mitigate damage.
  • Mergo’s Wet Nurse: A multi-armed Great One that focuses on rhythmic slicing attacks. When the arena turns dark (the Fog Phase), sprint around the outer edge to avoid her clones until the light returns.
