Abilities & Skills
Welcome, Sensei, to the intricate world of student abilities and skills in Blue Archive! Mastering these is paramount to overcoming the toughest challenges Kivotos throws your way. Unlike some games where you can freely respec, Blue Archive's skill system requires careful planning. We'll guide you through understanding each skill type, optimizing your students, and making informed decisions.
Understanding Skill Types
Every student in Blue Archive possesses a unique set of skills that define their role and combat effectiveness. These are broadly categorized into four types:
- EX Skill: The student's ultimate ability, manually activated during combat by spending EX Cost. These are often game-changers, capable of dealing massive damage, providing crucial healing, or applying powerful crowd control.
- Basic Skill: An automatically activated skill that triggers periodically during combat. These provide consistent utility, such as minor damage, buffs, or debuffs.
- Enhanced Skill: A passive skill that permanently boosts a student's stats or provides a consistent benefit. These are always active and contribute to a student's overall power.
- Sub Skill: Another passive skill that often provides situational benefits or further enhances other skills. These can be crucial for specific team compositions or combat scenarios.
Skill Leveling Strategy: The Early Game
For new Senseis, it's tempting to invest skill points immediately. However, we strongly advise a more cautious approach, especially with limited resources. Think of it like the early advice from veteran players in other RPGs: "don't put any skill points into skills until you really know what you're doing."
Actionable Steps for Beginners:
- Prioritize EX Skills: In the early game, the biggest impact comes from your students' EX Skills. Focus your initial Skill Materials on leveling up the EX Skills of your primary damage dealers, healers, and crowd controllers. For example, if you have a strong striker like Hoshino, prioritize her EX Skill to maximize her damage output.
- Identify Core Healers: Just as "Wind Mage to level 2 for healing" was crucial in other titles, securing reliable healing is vital in Blue Archive. Identify your main healer (e.g., Serina, Hanae) and invest in their Basic Skill and EX Skill to ensure your team's survivability.
- Hold Off on Other Skills (Initially): Resist the urge to level every Basic, Enhanced, and Sub Skill. Resources are scarce, and you'll want to save them for students who will be mainstays in your roster.
- Replay Free Missions: If you find yourself struggling, revisit "Free Missions" within the Campaign. These missions are excellent for grinding student experience, acquiring new equipment, and gathering lower-tier Skill Materials. The increased power from leveling and better gear will often be more impactful than minor skill upgrades in the very early stages.
Advanced Skill Optimization: Mid to Late Game
Once you have a solid understanding of your roster and the game's mechanics, you can start to specialize your skill investments.
Skill Material Acquisition
Skill Materials are essential for upgrading abilities. Here's where to find them:
- Bounties: The primary source for specific Skill Materials. Each Bounty stage drops materials for certain skill types (e.g., "Attack" materials, "Guard" materials, "Support" materials). Prioritize Bounties that drop materials for your most important students.
- Lessons: Completing Lessons (found in the Schedule tab) can yield Skill Materials, especially for Enhanced and Sub Skills.
- Event Shops: Limited-time events often feature event shops where you can exchange event currency for valuable Skill Materials. Always check these shops!
- Total Assault Shop: For higher-tier materials, the Total Assault shop is a reliable source.
- Crafting Chamber: While not a direct source, you can use lower-tier materials to craft higher-tier ones in the Crafting Chamber, though this can be resource-intensive.
Strategic Skill Leveling
As you progress, consider the following:
- Damage is King: As noted by veterans, "Damage is the most important thing." For your main damage dealers, continue to prioritize their EX Skill and any Enhanced/Sub Skills that directly boost their attack power or critical hit rate.
- Support Skill Breakpoints: Some support skills, especially those that apply buffs or debuffs, have significant power spikes at certain levels. Research specific student guides to identify these breakpoints and prioritize reaching them.
- Drop Rate Skills: Some students possess Sub Skills that increase item drop rates. While not directly combat-oriented, these can be incredibly valuable for farming resources. Consider investing in these for your dedicated farming teams. For example, a student with a "Weapon Drop" skill can significantly boost your equipment acquisition.
- Synergy Focus: Look for synergies between students' skills. For instance, a student who applies a DEF debuff pairs perfectly with a high-damage EX Skill from another student. Leveling both skills strategically will yield greater results than leveling them in isolation.
Remember, Sensei, careful planning and resource management are key to unlocking your students' full potential. Don't be afraid to experiment with different team compositions and skill priorities as you delve deeper into the world of Blue Archive!
