Character Progression & Upgrades
In Boneworks, true character progression isn't about leveling up a skill tree in the traditional RPG sense. Instead, it's about expanding your arsenal, unlocking new tools, and mastering the physics-driven combat and puzzle mechanics. This section will guide you through the most impactful upgrades and how to acquire them, ensuring you're always prepared for the challenges ahead.
Unlocking Weapons & Tools
Your primary method of "upgrading" in Boneworks comes from discovering and unlocking new items in the Museum's Item Spawners. These spawners allow you to retrieve any item you've previously collected and deposited into a Reclamation Bin. The more items you find, the more options you have at your disposal.
Key Item Acquisition Strategies:
- Thorough Exploration: Many powerful weapons and useful tools are hidden off the beaten path. Always check every nook, cranny, ventilation shaft, and destructible environment.
- Reclamation Bins are Your Friends: Whenever you find a new weapon, ammo type, or utility item, make a point to deposit it into the nearest Reclamation Bin. This adds it to your permanent collection, making it available from any Item Spawner.
- Arena & Sandbox Rewards: Completing challenges in the Arena and experimenting in the Sandbox can sometimes unlock unique items or provide ample opportunities to find new ones.
Essential Early-Game Unlocks:
- Gravity Gloves: While not an "upgrade" in the traditional sense, mastering these is crucial. They allow you to manipulate objects from a distance, making puzzle-solving and combat much more fluid. You acquire these early in the campaign.
- Crowbar: An invaluable multi-tool. Not only is it a decent melee weapon, but it's essential for prying open crates, breaking weak points, and accessing hidden areas.
- Location: Often found in the first few levels, particularly in the Museum and Streets levels, sometimes near construction areas or maintenance rooms.
- Pistol (9mm): Your standard sidearm. Reliable and common.
- Location: Plentiful throughout the game, often dropped by enemies or found on weapon racks in security areas. Ensure you reclaim one early.
- Board with Nails: A surprisingly effective melee weapon for early encounters, offering good reach and damage.
- Location: Can be found in various industrial or construction-themed levels, such as the Sewers or Runoff.
Advanced Weaponry & Utility Upgrades
As you progress, you'll encounter more formidable enemies and complex environmental puzzles. Having access to a diverse arsenal is key.
Mid-to-Late Game Must-Haves:
- Shotgun (Pump-Action/Automatic): Devastating at close range, perfect for clearing groups of enemies or dealing with heavily armored foes.
- Location: Pump-Action Shotguns start appearing around the Warehouse and Central Station levels. Automatic versions are rarer, often found in later, more challenging areas or as rewards.
- Assault Rifle: Offers a balance of range, fire rate, and damage. Great for sustained engagements.
- Location: Typically found in military-themed sections or dropped by more advanced enemy types in levels like Tower or Long Bridge.
- Energy Sword: A powerful and satisfying melee weapon capable of dismembering enemies with ease.
- Location: Often a reward for completing specific challenges or found in secret areas towards the end of the game. Keep an eye out in the Void G114.
- Shield: Essential for defensive play, especially against ranged enemies or in tight corridors.
- Location: Can be found in various security checkpoints or military installations. The Arena can also be a good place to acquire one.
- Flare Gun: While seemingly simple, the Flare Gun can be used for more than just illumination. Its projectiles can ignite flammable objects and even stun certain enemies.
- Location: Often found in darker, more atmospheric levels like the Sewers or Runoff.
Physical Prowess & Environmental Mastery
Beyond weapons, your "character progression" is heavily tied to your understanding and mastery of Boneworks' physics engine. This includes:
- Climbing & Parkour: Improving your ability to navigate vertical spaces and traverse obstacles efficiently. Practice makes perfect here.
- Weapon Handling: Becoming proficient with different weapon types, understanding their recoil, reload mechanics, and optimal usage scenarios.
- Environmental Manipulation: Learning to use the environment to your advantage – stacking crates, creating makeshift bridges, or using explosive barrels.
- Melee Combat Techniques: Mastering the nuances of physical combat, including disarming enemies, using momentum for powerful swings, and blocking attacks.
There are no direct "skill points" for these, but consistent practice and experimentation will lead to significant improvements in your overall effectiveness and survival rate.
