Introduction & Basic Concepts
Welcome, fellow Brotato! Whether you're a seasoned survivor of alien hordes or a fresh sprout ready to face the onslaught, this guide will equip you with the fundamental knowledge to thrive in the chaotic arenas of Brotato. Understanding the core mechanics and making smart decisions from the get-go is crucial for achieving those coveted wave 20 victories.
The Core Loop: Survive, Collect, Upgrade
Brotato's gameplay loop is deceptively simple yet endlessly engaging:
- Survive Waves: Each wave throws increasingly difficult enemies at you. Your primary goal is to stay alive until the timer runs out.
- Collect Materials: Defeated enemies drop "Materials" (the purple currency). These are your lifeblood for upgrades.
- Shop & Upgrade: After each wave, you enter the shop. Here, you spend your Materials on new weapons, items, and stat upgrades. This is where your build truly takes shape.
Understanding Your Brotato
Every run begins by selecting a Brotato character. Each Brotato has unique starting stats, bonuses, and sometimes even penalties. For beginners, we recommend starting with:
- Brawler: Starts with +20% Melee Damage and +1 HP Regen. A solid all-rounder for learning the ropes.
- Ranger: Starts with +20% Ranged Damage and +5% Crit Chance. Great for players who prefer keeping their distance.
Don't be afraid to experiment once you're comfortable, but these two offer forgiving starting points.
Key Stats & What They Do
Understanding your stats is paramount to making informed decisions in the shop. Here's a breakdown of the most important ones:
Offensive Stats
- Damage: Increases the base damage of your weapons. Simple, yet effective.
- Attack Speed: How quickly your weapons fire. More attacks mean more damage over time.
- Crit Chance: The likelihood of dealing critical damage (usually 2x damage).
- Crit Damage: Increases the multiplier of critical hits.
- Melee Damage: Boosts damage for melee weapons (e.g., Stick, Spiky Shield).
- Ranged Damage: Boosts damage for ranged weapons (e.g., Pistol, SMG).
- Elemental Damage: Increases damage for elemental weapons (e.g., Flamethrower, Lightning Gun).
- Engineering: Increases the damage of your turrets and drones. Crucial for Engineer builds.
- Explosion Size: Increases the radius of explosions from explosive weapons (e.g., Rocket Launcher, Grenade Launcher).
Defensive Stats
- HP (Health Points): Your total health. Don't let this hit zero!
- HP Regeneration: How much health you recover per second. Invaluable for sustained survival.
- Armor: Reduces incoming damage by a flat amount. Very strong early game.
- Dodge: Chance to completely avoid an incoming attack. Scales better into the late game.
- Life Steal: Heals you for a percentage of the damage you deal. Excellent for aggressive playstyles.
- Max HP: Increases your total health pool. More HP means more room for error.
Utility/Economy Stats
- Speed: How fast your Brotato moves. Essential for dodging and positioning.
- Harvesting: Increases the amount of Materials dropped by enemies. Prioritize this early! More Materials mean more upgrades.
- Luck: Increases the chance of rare items appearing in the shop and better item drops from enemies.
The Shop: Your Path to Power
After every wave, you'll enter the shop. This is where you spend your hard-earned Materials. Here's how to navigate it:
- Weapons: You can hold up to 6 weapons. Aim for synergy! Don't mix Melee and Ranged weapons unless you have a specific build in mind (e.g., a hybrid character).
- Items: These provide passive stat bonuses or unique effects. Look for items that complement your chosen weapons and stats. Examples include Bandana (Crit Chance), Padding (Armor), or Medikit (HP Regen).
- Stat Upgrades: These are direct increases to your stats. Often more expensive than items but provide reliable boosts.
- Rerolls: For a small Material cost, you can reroll the shop's offerings. Don't be afraid to use these, especially if the current selection is poor. However, the cost increases with each reroll within a single shop phase.
- Locking Items: You can "lock" an item or weapon you want to buy later. It will remain in the shop for the next phase. This is useful if you're short on Materials but see a crucial item.
Early Game Strategy (Waves 1-5)
Your first few waves are critical for setting up a strong run. Focus on these priorities:
- Prioritize Harvesting: Aim to get at least +30-50 Harvesting by wave 5. Items like Bag (+8 Harvesting) or Tree (+15 Harvesting) are excellent early pickups. More Harvesting means more Materials for future upgrades.
- Choose a Weapon Type: Decide early if you're going Melee, Ranged, or Elemental. Stick to it to maximize your damage scaling. Don't spread your stats too thin.
- Get Some Survivability: A little HP Regen, Armor, or Max HP goes a long way. Even a single Padding (+3 Armor) can make a huge difference against early enemies.
- Clear the Map: Try to kill as many enemies as possible to maximize Material drops. Don't just kite; engage when safe.
By following these initial steps, you'll lay a solid foundation for a successful Brotato run. Good luck, and may your potato be ever-spud-tacular!
